This sermon was my introduction to Tim Keller and his ministry. It was life changing/paradigm shifting as were many things I learned in the Bible through him. His exposition of Jesus' teaching about work, social justice, Lazarus and Jesus' perspective of death, and putting the gospel at the center of every sermon are specific examples that have permanently changed my walk with God. What a wonderful example of the power of a man of God who "Correctly handles the word of truth...."(2 Tim 2:15). Can't wait to meet you with glorified bodies and thank you in person Pastor Keller.

The Holy Spirit working through Tim Keller brings so much clarity and light. If I had this 30 years ago, I may have made less mistakes and lived in less confusion, and glorified my Lord further. Now we have this and we are redeemed.

This makes me think of the Catholic Church where there are images of a MARY, the mother of Jesus; and the different “saints” people pray to, kneel before, and light candles and bring flowers to. How do we address this?

For more on idolatry, another place to look is Christopher Wright's book The Mission of God. He has a different more recent take in Here Are Your Gods, but the earlier work is much more thorough and biblical. One improvement is that I think in the first book there are three things that make something an idol: anything that entices us (that we love more than we love God), anything we fear (more than we fear God), and anything we trust (more than we trust God). In the newer book I believe he adds a fourth one saying anything we need (more than we need God). Keller's third was from another source, saying anything we serve (more than we serve God). An interesting thing about when idols are things of our own making, is that not only are we the creation not relating to the Creator as God, but we as creators are relating to our own creations as gods. It is one thing to make another of God's creations into a god, but for us to make one of our own creations into a god is really beneath us and unreasonable.

I was kind of disappointed that Keller did not address the idolatry connected with abortion in his list of idols. Of all New York and America's sins, this seems the most flagrant and heinous. A bit concerning, considering he emphasized the need to confront a culture's idols, that he did not confront the maybe the biggest one.

People gain belief to idols because their mind is conditioned. Idols influence is “ what the mind conceives, the body can achieve.” The influence is psychological. Psychological doesn’t welcome the belief in God. All idolaters are psyche beings only. Idolaters have power of the mind but God -believing people have the power of God governing.

Any student of the scriptures knows that Moses Elijah , Jeremiah Ezekiel etc confronted Idols, among God's predestined people the nation of Israel , His First Born Son collectively in Exodus chapter 4v22, and individually His children in Isaiah chapter 1v2, and told them that they had retained the idols of Egypt after they had been redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb, and rescued from Pharaoh's power, but in this present dispensation, of God's Grace to the Gentiles, all the nations of the world, His message is for God so loved the World He gave His only Begotten Son to save them, all, and just the Serpent on the Pole was God means to save everyone in Israel who was poisoned with the serpents God sent to save those who had sinned against Him , so God sent His Son to save everyone in this world who had sinned against Him, and notice not to condemn the world , but to save the world

I don't like this talk about "exposing" and "destroying" idols. It once again show us the arrogance and disrespect by monotheism we were already familiar with. If people want to worship Artemis, Apollo or Zeus, let them. It's none of your business.

Penn Jillette who is an atheist has said one reason he does not believe in Christianity is because too few Christians proselytize. His thought is if you believe in heaven and hell and you will let your neighbor go to hell because the telling would be socially awkward that you must either be filled with hate or don’t believe it yourself. If we are right then showing people Christ is the only loving thing to do.

You forget, or haven’t read, that the prophets were commanded and did literally destroy idols in “the high places”. Paul and the other apostles did “expose” and therefore “destroy” the idols. Now, that’s what the Bible says they did as lead by God. You can disagree of course and conclude is arrogant. Well, wouldn’t telling the God, the Creator of the universe how to behave be arrogant as well? If the heard the whole sermon he describes how destructive idols are to us and explains why, out of love, God commands us to destroy them and not worship them.
@theovanrossum8652
@theovanrossum8652 2 жыл бұрын
@@danielsaezv Do you realise that your Bible doesn't mean anything to other religions who believe that their Gods created the universe? Everybody believes to have the true religion so this is an unsolavable problem and makes truth rather subjective when it comes to religion. And I still keep my stance that monotheism can be arrogant. How would you like it if someone destroyed things in your church?
@theovanrossum8652
@theovanrossum8652 2 жыл бұрын
@@danielsaezv _"You forget, or haven't read"_ What makes you think so? I come from a catholic family so don't tell me I don't know what's in the Bible. But that doesn't mean that I have to accept it as truth. If your God commands you not to worship them, that's reasonable and I'm ok with that, but the destruction part I cannot tolerate. It's inviting a conflict.
