In this program, Lerone Martin, Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Research and Education Institute at Stanford University, discusses his recent book, The Gospel of J. Edgar Hoover, which reveals how Hoover and his FBI teamed up with leading white evangelicals and Catholics to bring about a white Christian America by any means necessary. His research draws on thousands of newly declassified FBI documents, including a civil lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice for FBI files on Billy Graham. Martin takes readers from the pulpits and pews of small-town America to the Oval Office, and from the grassroots to denominational boardrooms. Just so were clear, White Christian Nationalism was already a fully developed self-fueling machine before the FBI was formed. The FBI chose to infiltrate these groups in order to prevent them from taking positions against private capital, the true power brokers in the US. It had nothing to do with faith. In the late 19th and early 20th century Christian groups across the country turned to socialism and fought against the destructive rise of industrial capitalism which predated upon workers, the environment and the social infrastructure of the family.

This is correct, Jesus preached total non-violence to the Jews. Only in the gospel of Luke (largely considered the least reliable of the gospels) does Jesus say to buy a sword. But in earlier manuscripts the word sword in that verse is actually transcribed as ‘sandals’

RFK, as attorney general, was technically Hoover's boss, but he was about 30 years younger than Hoover. Hoover was obsessed with himself and his bureau and he detested anyone who he felt wasn't showing proper respect. As I recall from previous reading, that perceived lack of respect is what set Hoover's hatred (I believe that's the appropriate word) for MLK Jr. MLK was invited to meet with Hoover but MLK was really busy at the time, so Hoover took that as an unforgivable insult.

If they don’t like blacks, Hispanics and Asians here on earth how are they going to cope in an ‘all race’ heaven? I wonder if they even think about it. I’m white, used to be a Christian, but gave it up because of the hypocrisy. I was taught that god created us all no matter the race or colour. Yet whites because of their colour believe they are superior. They forget that Jesus was dark skinned, dark haired and brown eyed. So white skinned Christians must believe they are more superior to their saviour. The hypocrisy is incredible and I don’t want to have anything to do with it.

I assure you heaven won’t be racially segregated. God doesn’t make or ratify human mistakes even if He forgives them. So if we want to have heaven on earth we have to eradicate segregation and care for our fellow human like we want to be cared for in addition to loving God with all our heart and soul.

I loved presentation but had difficulty putting it in context. I think the title and framing may get in the way of the stor(at least as presented in lecture). Everything changed during Hoover. The world changed. People got cars. The U.S. became 50 states. The social welfare state was created. There were real communist governments costing tens of millions of lives. He came in as the Klan was waning and civil rights activism rose.The place of women in society was revolutionized. "God and Country" was not just a "Christian Nationalist" ideal. The nation was in real turmoil in the 60's. And Hoover was very powerful (for being the head of a law enforcement agency}. But neither was he the cause of all the change. The story is important--but carries the risk of whenever on looks at broad cultural change and the impact of one variable (e.g. Hoover) on that. Puting White Evangelicalism at the center of American religiosity is grossly overstated.

Seriously! An evangelical by the name of Billy Graham told his fellow evangelicals that Jesus was black in the 1960s. They have most definitely been in denial ever since. Notwithstanding, I grew up with the teachings of Thomas Merton, courtesy of my mother and the Black Catholic Movement and Dr. James Cone also courtesy of my mother and the Civil Rights Movement. So I was raised to believe white Christian theology was the problem with Christianity.
