PODCAST: The Gospel of Mary Magdalene and Gnostic Spirituality
IMAGE: The early Jesus movement (the Hebrew Christians or Ebionites) seem to have reinterpreted these images used around the Mediterranean world for the sun god and moon goddess, adopting them, transforming them into the earliest icons of their own faith: the sun of god Christ and his companion Mary of Magdala, surrounded by the Twelve Apostles (related to the twelve signs of the zodiac).
We don't have much information about "the Mary Magdalene community", the spiritual group that once valued the GofMM as one of its scriptures, other than what can be observed in the contents of the book. It presents Mary as not only equal to her male counterparts as an apostolic leader in early Christianity, but also perhaps as the widow of Christ -- wife of the guru, and his primary spiritual successor with the most insight and understanding of Christ's message. Mary also described visions of the radiant form of her Master, the resurrected Christ.
The Gnostics, like other mystics, see the soul as being beyond gender. The physical, and subtle bodies: astral, causal, mental, etheric… have a gender or combination of genders, but the soul is beyond gender. Therefore the Gnostics of two thousand years ago were generally more open to the idea of the leadership roles of women, including as Apostle, as in the case of Mary Magdalene, who is portrayed in the Gospel of Mary as a kind of spiritual successor to Yeshua (or wife of the master), and more enlightened than anyone else in the group.
"Mary answered and said, What is hidden from you I will proclaim to you." (Gospel of Mary)
"When Mary said this, she turned their hearts to the Good, and they began to discuss the words of the Savior." (Gospel of Mary)
Mary was an apostle or master who was a visionary, one who saw many visions of various inner planes or heavenly regions during her meditations, and the Radiant Form of her spiritual master. A beautiful passage from the Gospel of Mary about a soul Mary saw during one of her visions when she was exploring the Second Heaven. This soul was being questioned by a being or power given the name “Desire”:
"The soul answered saying, You did not see me nor did you know me. You mistook the garment I wore for my true self. And you did not recognize me."
How easy it is to only see the surface, to in fact be wasting away whole lifetimes being a surface-dweller, neither knowing one’s self nor seeing the true identity of others as souls. In truth we are all particles of Light dwelling within bodies, we are Notes that make up a divine symphony.
In Gnostic scriptures such as the Gospel of Mary, unenlightened human existence is portrayed as a kind of night of the living dead, souls living in a world of sleep caught up in dreams of illusion, trapped in spiritual ignorance somewhere in time, limited to only a couple of dimensions, tethered to material existence seemingly unable to become aware of anything more. One of my favorite passages from Mary is when a liberated soul exclaims:
“I was set loose from a world and from the chain of forgetfulness that exists in time!”
Another “Mary” further to the East by the name Mira Bai once said,
“My mind, birth after birth,
lost in slumber,
Awoke on hearing the Sound
my Master gave."
“When the Blessed One had said this, he greeted them all. ‘Peace be with you!’ he said. ‘Acquire my peace within yourselves. Be on your guard so that no one deceives you by saying, ‘Look over here!’ or ‘Look over there!’ For the Seed of True Humanity exists within you. Follow it! Those who search for it will find it.”
Some commentary found in a footnote of the same translation adds:
“The disciples must search within themselves, to find the Seed of True Humanity that is within each person. They must guard against those who try to lead them astray by requiring that a person conform to what is outside.” (The Complete Gospels, Robert J. Miller)
For the mystic-soul there is no need to construct outward temples made of wood and stone, as the human body itself is already a temple of the Spirit. I’m sure this “within you” message of the Gnostic or mystical gospels is one of the reasons why they were not politically useful to some in antiquity, and thus they were banned. The saying above reflects a theme found in the teachings of countless mystics and masters, that the focus is “within”, not elsewhere in the outer world of the five senses, the kingdoms of this world. Thus, contemplative meditation for mystics serves as a kind of heavenly “portal” or “doorway” to the Divine.

They were Essene’s, and taught all esoterics in the best mystery schools around the world. That’s what Jesus was doing during his “missing years” - he wasn’t just magically born with all his knowledge. But I believe all this, I resonate with it, I learned all about Mary’s life and what they went through and so I’m doing more research - it seems I was right, and so are you. Spirit led me here. The photo is truly mind blowing, though. The first sun and moon goddess were Yeshua and Mary? It would make so much sense. Woooow.

Thanks for finding the podcasts (lots more here on meditation practice, being vegan, and the lesser-known spiritual views of the People of the These Ancient Texts). I suspect the Jesus Movement (Ebionites, Nasoraeans) appropriated that image for themselves, finding in it the symbolism of Jesus (sun), Mary (moon) and the twelve apostles (months of the year). Eventually of course they created their own images as iconography became an art. There's a great book on the history of this period and connections between the Essenes, John the Baptist sect, Jesus Movement and the other sects that came out of the John the Baptist group called, "Disciples", by Keith Akers. Also, on Mary, Karen King's book, "The Gospel of Mary of Magdala: Jesus and the First Woman Apostle", is quite nice, and has some additional verses from the Gospel of Mary usually not included in translations, from the Greek Oxyrhynchus fragments of the Gospel of Mary. Seems to be the most complete translation of what survives of the Gospel of Mary Magdalene.

The Sant Mat path and Christianity are the same, merely different presentations of the stucture of the universes and the spiritual path throught them. Mary represents the qualities within that are 'temporal' as you say. And the Jesus represents the planted seed or child of God in every one's being. If you look into your other training you may see this. This is not a story of human characters, but male and female inner characters that appear in dreams to lead and educate. 'Be on guard to that you are not deceived, the son is within you'. The higher aspect of the mind (subcoonscious) is the plane of the female form of soul. The creative power of the mind which gives form to this dimenson. If you read the works with this is mind; we see the appropriate use of the word Mary.

I don't think that missing part of the papyrus was 'mouth'. It does not reason that the other disciples would be jealous of Jesus kissing Mary Magdalene on the lips. It's more likely he kissed her forehead moreso than cheek. Kissing someone's forehead to me, is a sign of affection an elder would give to someone younger or what fathers and mothers do with children. If the other disciples witnessed this I would imagine they would feel somewhat slighted. I would think something wrong with the disciples if they were jealous of Jesus kissing his 'companion' on the mouth. Wouldn't that be a normal act of affection?

The book Anna by Claire Heartsong explains much about Jesus and Mary. They were raised in an Essene community. Vegetarian for certain. Not the community at Qumran but at Mt.Carmel. And yes Jesus kissed his wife Mary on the mouth ; ) xxxx

In the case of the Gospel of Mary Magdalene most of it is lost, with only a few chapters remaining. Hopefully more copies of it will be discovered one day. Some Nag Hammaid books are mostly complete, but others are missing many words making them hard to read like Dialogue of the Saviour and Mar Sans. And there are many other books yet to be discovered. These discoveries so far only represent a small number of the writings that once existed.

However, Saint Catherine's Monastery in Egypt, libraries in the monasteries atop Mount Athos in Greece, and surviving collections of writings in the Syriac dialect from what's left of the monastic libraries of the Syriac Churches of the East are no doubt where many yet unpublished treasures are being stored. Those could be sources for other editions of the Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Mary and who knows what might be there. Saint Catherine's claims to have a couple more letters of Paul. Hope they will see the light of day, will be published, so we may have a look.

No way would Christ have kissed Mary on the lips. He was a man of spotless chastity. If these ancient words are even authentic, Christ would hae kissed her on the head at the very most, since *that* would have shown a sign of His favor, and He would have done so because among His disciples, she was the only one not to betray Him.

Spiritually speaking (gender aside), matriarchal (gnostic) wisdom can begin with a fundamental understanding of the cyclical nature of reality (God). Represented by the snake in many creation myths, the living cycle has a trinity of a beginning (head), a middle and end (tail). As above so below, the sexes were created in the image of God's cyclical nature where Mother is the head and opening to all beginnings and Father holds the tail to all endings (through which the sowing of seeds allow for the next great matriarchal rebirth).The joining of the two (symbolized by the Ouroborus or the marriage ring) is the sacred union needed in assuring the creation and continuation of new life cycles. To speak of the present day God as "Our Father" is simply an admission to our collective positioning within the bigger cycle. As all mothers have direct experience with the creator quality of birthing, so is the direct experience of rebirthing the divinity within (baptism) belong to that which is spiritually matriarchal. (John 3, verse 3-8). Sekhmet statues (ancient Egyptian) carry most of their weight in symbolic memory of what was a mother culture dedicated to the direct experience of baptism. As the leg shaped hairlocks extend from maternal breasts to the womb of rebirth, the lioness's head proportions are such that they highlight the bust of a second animal figure. The Lioness's ears as eyes and eyes as nose (nostrils) brings to life the figure of a reptile. 'Neath the halo headress of the solar egg, the lioness's egg fertilization process being internal (Set) and the reptile's egg fertilization process being external (Setting), such being key components to the safety of entering the trans-egoic or "born again" state. The life threatening fear associated with the predatory nature of a lion and/or crocodile encounter are reflective of the intense ego death experiences associated with the transpersonal awakening process. In spiritually matriarchal times, illumination could be seen as wearing the false beard (ancient Egyptian funerary "ego" death mask) as the high state of cyclical self knowing; high awareness of both our upper matriarchal half and our lower (later) patriarchal half (compared with a mini lower body replica, an "as above so below" tail end beard extension); in full recognition of her civilizational Underworld, her inevitable cyclical destiny. The male pharaoh wears his beard tapered in reverse, indicating a pointing upwards towards the patriarchal head, divine representative of God's tail end cycle. Mary Magdalene's anointing and wiping of Jesus's feet with her hair can then be seen as head to tail (toe) imagery as she descends her matriarchal head to his patriarchal feet, thus reenacting the high understanding of the divine cyclical process. (John 12:3) To carry the Ankh was perhaps to symbolically carry that upper and lower understanding. As the upper matriarchal womb symbolised the fertile birthing of civilization, below, the now Christian cross is carried to place emphasis on the lower (later) "End Times" Father principle of the great cycle. Lord Ganesha, the elephant headed Hindu diety, displays a cyclical head to trunk symbolism and points to the Mother head of his matriarchal elephant society. Ganesha (like the elephant) wears God's cyclical nature on his face. Jewish Oral Law says that a Rabbi cannot teach children if he is single. Plain and simple. Rabbis agree, Jesus was married. Case closed. Jesus said, "Do not forbid the children to come unto me." And they came, and he taught them. Another Jewish tradition says that if a man turns 20 and he is still not married, "LET HIM PERISH". More food for thought. Mary Magdalene was the daughter of the rich Arimathean i.e. Zebedee. EWTN Catholic Radio estimates Zebedee to be worth 100 Billion dollars in today's terms. Her marriage DOWRY to her husband Jesus was more than enough to fund/GIFT Jesus' ministry and pay for his tomb and support the Virgin Mary and Joseph's other wives when Joseph/Zebedee ascended back into heaven alive in the manner of Elijah. The Hebrew name ZEBEDEE means GIFT/DOWRY. At Joseph's ascension, John Bar-Zebedee (Elisha's KEPHEL) could be heard to exclaim, "My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel." FYI, Joan of Arc and Mary Magdalene are ONE.
