They were to interview faculty and teachers, people who could objectively speak on their grades and integrity. Not students. Dispite her interviewers saying her friend was a great candidate and everyone in the meeting knew she was qualified, Laura had her removed from the list because of gossip from another student. Freida accused her friend of messing with her boyfriend, and that she helped him (and probably through him, others) cheat on the test.

I heard a priest I know talking about gossip, and he made a great point: we tend to think of gossip as being mean-spirited, but it isn't always -- gossip is basically sharing information about someone with others that they don't need to know. Before sharing anything about someone else, ask yourself, "Does the person I'm telling really need to know this?" I hope Frieda ended up getting shunned by the whole school and having to eat by herself because of what a piece of crap she is.

This film made way before my time, portrayed the girls so well, I felt a strong urge to want to smack a couple of them, especially Frieda! They'd be eating their meals through straws for months! I think my friendship with Laura would never be the same again. Laura should have known better, especially after Jean first spoke to Laura about verifying any gossip coming out of Frieda's big mouth. 65 yrs later since this film came out, I find that these 'Frieda' types still flap their gossipy yaps, be they a student, co worker, neighbour etc.. It's human nature I suppose to get carried away with gossip, but one should never ever cross the line with the type of gossip that can hurt another.

My mother was a book keeper for a drug store. Down one wall was the "soda fountain", with a counter with stools like a diner. You could get burgers, cokes, floats, and ice cream. There were the usual health and beauty supplies, like a CVS or Walgreens. In the back opposite the pharmacy (which was at the end of the soda fountain counter) were the stationary supplies, Cliff Notes, comic books, magazines, and all sorts of paperbacks. The store had its own special smell, which was wonderful. Nothing like it today. It was magical.
