So a correction on something more nerdy... It's established a few times that Goku would have to reduce his power level to match Vegeta's for the dance, in the same way Trunks reduces his to fuse with Goten. Both Goku and Piccolo already knew that, and given Vegeta's temperament I doubt either made an issue of it during the Broly movie. Goku probably just quietly lowered his pl without comment. Rest is spot on tho. Better ship than Trunks/Mai for damn sure.

@@Readus101 that's fair. Even then tho, there's a weeeeird portion of the dragonball fan base that thinks Vegeta has continued to grow throughout Z because something something saiyan genetics. My head canon is just that he and Bulma have just been going in on wishes together. It's implied she's done the 5 years thing mentioned in Broly before, and that Vegeta knows about it. Wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason he's clearly taller than in the Namek saga.

I always thought they'd just bond more and more given their already established friendship and then fusing and knowing one another on a really intimate, emotional level and having LITERALLY shared thoughts. Well, since the Trunks that gets with Mai is Future Trunks, from a timeline where Goten was never born, I'm hust gonna go ahead and say he's bi, and then he falls for Goten as expected. We don't really need to change any established canon, or work hard to make it fit, because it's canon that the Trunks that falls in love with Mai is not the same as our main timeline's Trunks. So a timeskip, like GT, as others have said, and during that time they've continued naturally as is, and we can get the start of their relationship on-screen after a battle where Goten goes beserk because Trunks gets badly hurt. Goten can cry to Trunks about how he could never live on without him, and in a moment of heartwrenching agony and catharsis he can be the one to admit that he's in love with Trunks, and always has been. Trunks will react with his usual pride and be like "Shut up dummy, I'm not dead." But he'll be blushing and look away, and after a moment reply with "And I know... I love you, too, dumbass." At which Goten will break down sobbing on his chest and Trunks will cuddle him and give him a kiss on the top of his head and, half-mockingly say "Now, how are you going to tell my dad?" (Vegeta of course accepts it with the same general proud indifference that he accepts anything, and a quiet "I know, idiot." as he slaps a hand on Trunks' shoulder. Because you know that King is actually hella accepting, he's grown heaps since he tried to kill Goku.)

ACTUALLY. Goten is defending Trunks, gets nearly killed, Trunks goes beserk a la Future Trunks v Zamasu, and then he's cradling Goten telling him off for being an idiot, and Goten says "I just couldn't let him hurt you... I love you Trunks." and Trunks is like "I know, I love you too dummy, but you know you're weaker than me." And Goten will say "I don't care about that, I still couldn't let him hurt you" and then Trunks kisses his head and the rest plays out the same. For a DBZ callback and thematic consistency, Vegeta will be mindcontrolled via his pride, and trying to kill his "weakness" in the form of his wife and kids. With the defeat at Trunks' hand being in part due to his love overcoming his pride. He doesn't feel that same deep love for Kakarot's kids, though, so he just shitstomps Goten without a second thought.

I love idea! Remember when Goten wanted to protect Gohan and asked Trunks to fuse. They were so in sync that despite it not being an hour yet they still tried to fuse to save Gohan. Now I just wish Super hadn’t crushed any chance of it. From giving kid Trunks a love interest in order to mirror alternate timeline Trunks’s girlfriend. Yeah I hope they expand it that would be great. And yeah I wish I could cuddle my male friends.

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH, THANK YOU!!! Also, in terms of other shonen anime, I think of Alito and Yuma from Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal and Jesse and Jaden from Yu-Gi-Oh GX! There's a lot of things that got changed from the sub to the dub, such as dialogue and entire scenes taken out because of how romantic they are, and although they aren't endgame I feel they're very much canon and present. There's other Yu-Gi-Oh series and ships that I can think of, such as Ai and Yusaku from Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS, but these are my main two!

Something I've thought about is what would happen if they tried the earing fusion, and given how close they are and how often they're fused anyway, would they even want to be separated? Would it ever come to a point where they felt like they should be fused all the time, because they're so much more powerful together, and sometimes it feels like it's the only way they can compete with all the ever increasing power levels, like they're more useful when they're together. Admittedly, I never really considered them as a possibility until I watched Steven Universe and realised that they're kinda the precursor for Garnet.

Also I doubt the fusion dance have anything that would have that much long lasting effects considering it’s only something that lasts for a limited amount of time. Now the Patara earrings on the other hand. Considering that the fusion was originally supposed to be permanent, might have such possible effects. Especially considering the fusion is deeper and the show keeps coming up with one reason or another to split the fusion up. Also while you may have mentioned Gotenks girlfriend in the unofficial GT, I feel you forgot about Trunks girlfriend in the official super run Mai. Who really sinks the gotten trunks ship with how close they are in the past and a precursor to how deep they’ll be in the future trunks timeline. And trust me it hasn’t failed to dawn on me how weird it is that trunks ends up with a woman that may be technically older than his mother even though she’s a child like him.

Doesn't take much, proly Doesn't even need this, but this made me giggle cause i can now hear Vegeta bitching at Goku for turning his son gay~ (while simultaneously proud of his boy for topping cause i feel like Saiyan culture didnt care about orientations... they had birth pods ffs~) this would just be something else to bitch/blame on goku~ Honestly the evidence is there, they are the closest to one another in the main timeline, and the influence and slight 'irking' from the fusion dance would undoubtedly play a role (compare future!Trunks and his development to mainline Trunks and further him actually developing a relationship with Mai~) Further add in the fanon speculation of Saiyan biology, pheromones, whatever you subscribe too, and they'd likely only be truly 'interested' sexually or romantically in other beings with relative great power (like their dads; Chichi being physically the strongest human female and Bulma being the objective ruler of the world with god-tier sass and no genuine fear) and effectively any relationships they 'try' with normal humans outside extreme cases (Gohan and Videl) and well... they just wouldn't add up... wouldn't be interesting and they wind up back with one another as a comfort space... Be it bros or further intimacy, due to their nature growing up with the 'secret society of Z fighters', an absentee dad (Goku) and best dad in anime (Vegeta) as their main source for male role model/surrogate dad, it would literally take nothing for them to turn from closer than close platonic friends/bros to romantic friends/bros... And from what ive learned of male development with 'friends' it edges that line all the time... it'd just be a matter of if they want to call it such or not~~ And if not, ya got a triple on the way cause any woman that gets one basically gets two bfs so it goes gay between them anyway~ XD As for my ship submissions, srsly, any MC females from a Trigger anime... they're so boarderline Yuri they sprout lilys wherever they step~ (Im mainly looking at you Akko and Diana from little witch academia, but also fox and tanuki girls from BNA and Kill la Kill progtag/antag totally not relationships~)

I never bothered to watch GT cause I saw one episode and was disappointed by the lack of Goten (among other things) so I can't speak to their dynamic there. But this whole video essentially sums up exactly how I always felt about Goten and Trunks. To me, regardless of how hard Super seems to be trying to convince me that Trunks is as straight as an arrow by forcing in the relationship with Mai, I'm not buying it. (Future Trunks I can let slide... not current). Goten x Trunks just have a really natural bond, that while I'm cool with them just being really close friends, it also just makes entirely so much sense that they would grow up to seamlessly fall into something more. I really really wish they wouldn't try so hard to counter that possibly. Plus also Statistically that many straight couples and not one LGBT anything..??? Not real lol I would also like to say thank you for bringing up IBO. That series may have destroyed me, but they really did treat that relationship and the characters with the respect it deserved

I don't think that's how fusion works. Gotenks is their own person not a combination of Goten and Trunks. Gotenks is just a product of the fusion dance. So Goten and Trunks don't share minds. They just share memories of time during the fusion (and maybe memories of each other).

I would take the Super story line and skip 10 years. Just as GT did, I wouldn’t just then start doing GT timelines but instead I would create an entire relationship saga. In which 2 characters from all of Dragonball Cannon get a series of episodes or an episode where they bond closer than ever. In which real romantic or platonic relationships are made everywhere. With Goten and Trunks either being the middle part or the end part of the saga with several episodes dedicated to them ending their other romantic relationships to then find each other again. And yes since this is Dragonball so I would have them fight. Sort of Buckey and Captain America style where Goten says something similar to “I’m with you all the way.” finally convincing Trunks to really reflect on his life, emotions, and relationships. And having that either end the saga and keeping all relationships cannon. Or having that be the mid point and we spend the other half of the saga with all the characters we have now in new cannon relationships. We could even connect it back to Super’s Cannon. With having that Universe that was based in love for their source of power being the cause for all the new romantic or platonic relationships. But instead of destroying all the relationships at the end everyone realizes that this exactly what they always wanted. It would be a lot of emotional writing and in the end it would tough to keep up with the Cannon of it but I think it would be amazing. And then yes this could be the last saga of Super. Closing the book on all Dragonball Cannon. Or we could even do another saga with a villain who doesn’t understand love being the main threat and every Dragonball relationship making them actively weaker forcing all kinds of hijinks as the villain has to secretly end each relationship from the background. Only for all the relationships to heal and for Goku to defeat the main villain with every new relationship coming together to form a Spirit bomb of love. Which destroys the main villain. And then the Dragonball Cannon would end because I don’t know how to add another villain or threat at that point and these sagas would tie up a lot of loose ends at least for the relationships. And everyone would live in peace with the ones they love. The End.

Again if you watch scenes between the two it's very gay but one isn't good at showing emotion due to trauma and the other is so oblivious its hilarious

Is it just me, or does attributing Goten and Trunks's potential romantic feelings to rushed childhood fusion feel a bit like saying "Reckless use of this technique messed with these poor kids' brains and made them gay"? That's obviously not what La'Ron _intended,_ but...well, I guess I'm just leery of any effect which alters someone's romantic/sexual preferences without their informed consent. Or anything else about them, but "who they love" seems a remarkably popular trait to alter. An argument focused less on "These kids are really young and didn't have much time to master the Fusion Dance and their teacher didn't know much about him" and more on "Fusion is an intimate experience which lets two people understand each other on a deep level" probably wouldn't feel as...love-potion-y.

Commenting a little on anime's depictions of queer characters, I do find it uncomfortable and upsetting while looking at it again, but I also find it weirdly 'compelling'? (I'm not sure how to describe it). It's almost like the stereotypes shown are how an ignorant child imagines them after hearing from adults and not understanding the subject. It is s***** and shows other characters uncomfortable of it, but it does not show fear of it, rather it shows curiosity. The characters are in the front, usually you see them in the heroes' party and while most have been comic relief, there have been a fair share that are shown as the party's moral compass or martyrs (which may be a different issue with queerness altogether but 1 thing at a time).

As you mentioned Akame Ga Kill having a really great representation of a gay male character, it just makes me sad to see the anime as a whole be... not the best. SPOILERS AHEAD! Within the show, the character Bulat is shown to be gay for the main character Tatsumi, which is awesome character stuff! And, well, he dies in the third episode of a twenty six episode show where his only lasting impact is giving Tatsumi his special weapon of a suit of armor (long story, plot stuff) which he wears till the end. It just saddens me because one of the best representations of a gay male character in a show was killed SO EARLY in the show and has little impact, which is added onto how literally two people that we give a shit about are the only ones alive at the end, all of the other characters on both the villain and hero side dying before the very end.

I mean I always kinda got a vibe, but with Shonen anime it's hard to tell, some mangaka, write their platonic friendships kinda fruity without realizing it and that is comming from a gay guy with many platonic male friends, fruit happens boys are boys I said what I said, it's 2024 learn to be emotionally balanced. But that being said romantic or platonic Toriama-san created a beautiful friendship there it's supportive intimate and honestly really healthy it's a beautiful thing to see. So gay straight or indifferent sadly we will never know because Toriama-san passed on, but If it turns out they are lovers, let me just say relationship goals, if they are just friends, I said what I said.

And on top of that, it's literally not even a kids' series, it's made for young adults, hence why the entire first series, Dragon Ball, has like thirty sex jokes an episode and Bulma frequently solves problems by flashing people her bod. Like, you literally can't get a more "true" anime than a Japanese made anime, made by a Japanese studio, based on a Japanese manga, made by a Japanese man, and which inspired at least one season of literally every anime aimed at men and boys since. But also, no, La'Ron makes it pretty clear at the start that this is his reading and that he's applying death of the author in order to talk about themes and sub-plots that *he* applies to the show, not that the show actually intended for. I've seen every episode of every Dragon Ball series, except the fanmade ones and Heroes (because Heroes is just an advertising campaign so idc) and although I also can't picture Trunks and Goten not being together, I also know that it's not an intention in the series. So although I still recommend watching everything up to the end of the Zamasu Future saga, I suggest that because it's just a good show, not for the ship.

@@Jane-oz7pp thanks for the long dissertation on Dragon Balls I guess I am not a Shonen jump series fan because I fell out of Dragon Balls because I got tired of it taking 20 episode to complete an entire fight what I actually considered true anime was my introduction to Ninja Scrolls and just the sharpness and sheer depth of story Dragon Ball Z I enjoy because I I do love the cell Saga but after that never really picked it up any further than that thanks for the lesson.

Though one can see the gay subtext, gay subtext ignores the japanese cultural influence that led to it. Goofy poses and dances? Sentai live action poses. Combining for greater power? Mecha. Tropes unique to Japan? Yes. So it feels that you're superceding the western interpretation over the Japanese interpretation.

Why wanting to have a cute gay couple is something wrong ? Wanting to have gay representation guys just need to get over there toxic views like I'm Bi/Pan and I can be friends with either gender without wanting to sleep with them. If a straight guy has a problem with expressing emotions or showing weaknesses he just needs to fix his problems its not fair to police LGBT+ folks to make the straight majority feel more secure live is hard enough. Also shipping characters is as old as literature Arthur Conan Doyle had to get back into writing Sherlock because he was so sick of shipping also Star Trek fandom basically created the modern fan fiction tropes. Sure we need positive examples of male friendships and gay relationships but it is not an either or situation.
