Diamond league didn't start till 2010 and Michael Johnson was long retired by then. But you are right on the spot with the Flo Track issue. Track and field needs to draw the casual viewer, so If they want to get viewership up for track and field, Flo Track isn't going to fill that void...it's a joke. Many aren't going to pay 30 dollars a month to watch track and there isn't that much interest in the US. Europe has always been more lucrative for US track athletes in terms of money and interest.

Track and Field (they call it Athletics in Europe) will forever be a fringe sport only really important to the masses around the Olympics. The best of the best is always ducking each other, and they don’t show up to the various meets consistently. If an athlete has world class speed potential they are better served in the revenue producing stick and ball sports where they can truly standout with that athleticism…and be compensated well for it.

You are reaching way too much. First thing I thought about the Flotrack thing when it was announced for Diamond League is that they can/should create an ad-version that’s free for viewers. Then for ad-free and more exclusive coverage, you pay whatever they’re charging. $30/month is too much but they can lower that with the offset from ad money. Sydney has zero competition in the hurdles and just about no comp in the open 400. Her only challenge is going sub-50 in the IH and breaking the open 400 record. If that means lightening her load and being careful with injury, I’m down. Femke has almost the same build as Sydney, does all that running, and is still a complete non-threat. MJ and investors didn’t make the league to appease Femke’s coach or anyone that thinks the traditional track season makes sense. They created it to get people paid and line up those that want to compete against the best.

This concept is bigger than Sydney. Why didn't you mention athletes that are supportive and enthusiastic about running and potentially winning $100 Grand for 2 days' work? I'm sure Jamaican and African runners would be willing to participate. As for the business model being able to recoup the initial investment and turn a profit, that is to be determined. If big name shoe companies and other sponsors get involved, that could be enough to make the idea profitable. Many business models went years before becoming profitable. It's irrational to declare a concept like this as DOA before the first event has even been staged. The WNBA allegedly isn't profitable, yet it stills goes on.

I remember Rod Milburn and a few other athletes were trying to start a pro track league and the reason it didn't work was " there were no sponsors". As I look back at then ( 1970-71) and now, there are several factors to be considered IF you want to be successful. I understand the commentators perspective and applaud him on several points but at the same time I think we, as people of color need to be more positive when looking for business solutions. Thank you M.Johnson for planting the seed, now we need to help nurture that plant to be. There is a template to follow so study it and adopt areas that could help grow the league. Let's stop this crab mentality......

Unless Flotrack is giving them $10million+ per year to be the exclusive network this is a terrible decision. The opportunity here was to use this league to build an American fan base. The sports networks struggle with content during the summer so to get on a major network at good times for American viewers should have been a layup. ESPN, or even FS1. And they probably would have paid handsomely for those rights. Other than that I don’t see how the league makes money either. NFL and nba are mercenaries when it comes to tv rights and goes to whoever paying the highest dollar. That’s how they make money for the league and players primarily. It’s looking like the wnba right now folks. 🤦🏽‍♂️
