It's possible The Grateful Dead smelled even worse than they sounded, which is really saying something. Even their fans agree, this band sucks. But let's be honest, this episode is just as much about trashing hippies as it is about trashing The Grateful Dead. And one of the worst things about hippies is that they think it's acceptable to listen to The Grateful Dead. It's not.
The only way anyone tolerated the sound was by being annihilated on drugs. Well, then there's Ann Coulter...

9:20 "That's how I feel about anyone who still likes this band, like just fucking let go" So, following this logic, as music gets older it gets worse? That songs have an expiration date? So Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven are all absolute garbage? Not sure if that holds up..

@@CuThUlUiSbOsS Why should anyone let go of music they love to listen to? Jerry may have died a long time ago, but their material is vast and different. Something that amazes me is a band like Kiss is liked. Their music is as basic and boring as it gets, and they need costumes and pyrotechnics to keep the weak minded fan's attention.

That's the exact same thing I looked up 😆. It all makes sense. It was the band of the acid maker, and all the hippies memories of the band are on acid so they have this attachment to it because they had great psychedelic experiences while listening to it. It used to confuse me why ppl liked it cuz the music isn't psychedelic at all. It's just like folk and blues.

George Carlin on hippies: "they took all: sex, drugs, and rock and roll. They stayed loaded for 30 years and had a free ride. Now they're staring down the barrel of middle age burn out. And they don't like it. So they turn self-righteous. They try to make things harder on younger people. They tell them abstain from sex. Say no to drugs. As for the rock and roll, they sold that for television commercials a long time ago. So they could buy pasta machines and stair masters, and soybean futures."

Their sound is unique, iconic and very original in a genre of its own. 5 The music is generally up lifting and gets people out of their comfort zone to start to move, dance and smile with each other. 6. Not a single one of the original dead members "mastered their instruments", and the only one I might allow a semblance of an argument on is Jerry. Bobby is clueless 50% of the time on his instrument and if you listen to isolated tracks of him on KZbin you'll realize that. People give him that bullshit, "his style is so unique" argument, but that just sounds convenient for what is really sloppy playing - I mean Jerry fired the guy once in the late 60s and I think if it wasn't for him and the others taking pity, it would have stayed that way. Billy is by no means some great drummer and he's admitted himself that he never cared much for keeping time and never practiced with a metronome, BUT THAT IS LITERALLY THE DRUMMER'S PRIORITY PLAYING WITH A GROUP (you really see the negative results of this at times with Dead and Co. where it feels like John, Oteil, and Jeff are sonically trying to pull the 3 others up a hill the entire show from constant dragging). Listen to Billy with Dead and Company, it's just lazy playing half the time. I haven't even got to Mickey yet, who seems to not understand that he's already got a drummer to accompany. Listen to Dead and Company and try to make the argument that Mickey and Billy do not step all over each other's musical toes half the time. You can point out that a lot of my criticisms come from post-Jerry dead reincarnations, but I think that is entirely fair. They shouldn't need Jerry around to sound halfway decent without having to bring in some of the best live performers time after time with Trey, Warren, John, etc... No one who has "mastered their instruments" in their lifetime declines to the point the current original Dead members are at. Down inside everyone knows if you took John, Oteil, and Jeff away from the 3 remaining (not including Phill obviously), 50% of the show would sound like a complete and total train-wreck. None of these are characteristics of anyone who has "mastered" their instruments in their lifetime. Jerry and Robert Hunter carried the most massive of loads in that group

This is a band with countless songs, right? Like, their "best" stuff sounds like Red Krayola at their absolute worst, like their filler album stuff on "God Bless the Red Krayola." It's even worse than I expected. Like Jesus H Christ deadheads...even as psychedelia there is nothing here. This is just stoned people playing freaking awful music badly.

American Beauty and Workingman's Dead are their two best albums. If you don't like those, then you are closing your minds to great music. There are so many live shows where they are just plain extraordinary and very creative. You will never hear the same show night after night like most bands, and you will never hear the same version of a song. You can go to five straight shows, and they will be very different from each other. Creativity is their calling card, and for you to say they lack creativity just shows you don't know what you are talking about.

Wow, I bought some GD albums, listened, enjoyed. I went to a show, thought it was really different. Enjoyed another 120 GD shows after that one. Still listen all these years later and hear great versions of songs I’ve never heard b4. I got off on the bands playing and Jerry’s virtuosity while they were touring. Still get off even more so on the thousands of live recordings. But I’m going to stop listening and realize that I was crazy to ever enjoy this music because Marc and Tyler think that The Grateful Dead suck. Can you two maybe compare and contrast Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. If you do, I promise that I will take my first hit of LSD

You know, this actually help me get off my soft mentality. I can now appreciate greatful dead songs for what they are. Personally, I find them catchy and very emotional just like most blues are. I do agree that some dead heads can be very close minded individuals but I’ve also met some very kind and open minded ones. I don’t like the fact that you shat on them, personally because I would never do that. I wouldnt shit on metálica or Pink Floyd or Clapton just becuase I don’t get their music or I think their music is not my type. Because they all have their different meaning so it doesn’t make sense to judge. But it’s a free country so whatever.

Wait a minute, I thought I was listening to a podcast about the ambivalence of the dead music and lack of contribution to society, not a mad libs Reefer Madness/Music Edition. Sounds like your real "beef" is your delicate tolerance and how you can't handle your substances. I was really hoping you'd focus more on the Peter pan syndrome or dead heads. But you keep inserting hippie with dead head, and they aren't the same thing. Dead heads will even tell you that, because they're exclusionary. And I hate to break it to you boys but the food you eat and the drinks you drink ARE drugs. Just because you dont have tolerance doesn't mean others are as weak as you. In fact MDMA and psychoactive s are used for depression and anxiety. Coincidently the hate on hippies is ignorant. You seem to be children in slightly matured bodies, especially with the inability to actual intelligent commentary and not just your own opinions due to lack of understanding. Quit generalizing please. And maybe ask questions, dont assume. As far as I see, you're actually acting like the exclusionary deadhead assholes, that are part of thenrpobelme with the culture... but because you're claiming anti, you believe youre above it. That's crap. Much like on the way, I'm not a FAN of the dead, but you could say I'm one of the BIGGEST fans because I once travelled 8 hours in a blizzard to go to a Schwagg Show. That's a dedication the "heads can recognize. Get over your separatist nonsense.

I used to be in a band with guys that were HEAVILY influenced by the Dead and Phish and loved everything Jam. I had never played that kind of stuff, but as the drummer, it gets old REALLY quick. I'm also not a weed user or drug user, so they'd get absolutely blasted before practice and i'd be the only one sober. I'm a huge fan of jazz fusion and prog, i.e Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham, Rush, E.L.P., Larry Coryell, etc. so playing with a group of guys that are high all the time and super easy and boring music really wasn't a good creative outlet for me. I kept telling them that all the songs we were playing sounded the same and that i was basically playing the same beat every song, and it got frustrating really quickly every practice. Our original songs were actually super fun and different, but when we spent more than half of the practice "just jamming", i really hated it. Nice take on why the Dead, jam bands, and their "culture" is such a fringe part of our society.

@@bluecollar825 If you're being sarcastic, thanks lol if not, musicians can play with whomever they like, that doesn't necessarily mean they like the music they're playing. Many studio drummers have a favorite style they love to play, but they more often than not play whatever genre will either take them or pay the most. Most country musicians are actually huge metal heads, but play with country bands cause it pays a fuck on and could be a huge stepping stone in their own careers, and actually hate country music. As for Cobham, he played with almost everyone...look at his discography and wikipedia page. Dude's been playing for over half a century and still putting out records.
