Muhammad Ali (/ɑːˈliː/;[3] born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.; January 17, 1942 - June 3, 2016) was an American professional boxer and activist. Nicknamed "The Greatest", he is regarded as one of the most significant sports figures of the 20th century, and is frequently ranked as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. In 1999, he was named Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and the Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC.
Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, he began training as an amateur boxer at age 12. At 18, he won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics and turned professional later that year. He became a Muslim after 1961. He won the world heavyweight championship, defeating from Sonny Liston in a major upset on February 25, 1964, at age 22. During that year, he denounced his birth name as a "slave name" and formally changed his name to Muhammad Ali. In 1966, Ali refused to be drafted into the military owing to his religious beliefs and ethical opposition to the Vietnam War and was found guilty of draft evasion and stripped of his boxing titles. He stayed out of prison while appealing the decision to the Supreme Court, where his conviction was overturned in 1971. He did not fight for nearly four years and lost a period of peak performance as an athlete. Ali's actions as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War made him an icon for the larger counterculture of the 1960s generation, and he was a very high-profile figure of racial pride for African Americans during the civil rights movement and throughout his career. As a Muslim, Ali was initially affiliated with Elijah Muhammad's Nation of Islam (NOI). He later disavowed the NOI, adhering to Sunni Islam.
He fought in several historic boxing matches, including his highly publicized fights with Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier (including the Fight of the Century, the biggest boxing event up until then), the Thrilla in Manila, and his fight with George Foreman in The Rumble in the Jungle. Ali thrived in the spotlight at a time when many boxers let their managers do the talking, and he became renowned for his provocative and outlandish persona. He was famous for trash-talking, often free-styled with rhyme schemes and spoken word poetry incorporating elements of hip hop. He often predicted in which round he would knock out his opponent.
Outside boxing, Ali attained success as a spoken word artist, releasing two studio albums: I Am the Greatest! (1963) and The Adventures of Ali and His Gang vs. Mr. Tooth Decay (1976). Both albums received Grammy Award nominations. He also featured as an actor and writer, releasing two autobiographies. Ali retired from boxing in 1981 and focused on religion, philanthropy and activism. In 1984, he made public his diagnosis of Parkinson's syndrome, which some reports attributed to boxing-related injuries, though he and his specialist physicians disputed this. He remained an active public figure globally, but in his later years made fewer public appearances as his condition worsened, and he was cared for by his family.
Ali was hospitalized in Scottsdale, Arizona, on June 2, 2016, with a respiratory illness. Though his condition was initially described as fair, it worsened, and he died the following day at the age of 74 from septic shock.
Ali's funeral had been pre-planned by himself and others for several years prior to his actual death. The services began in Louisville on June 9, 2016, with an Islamic Janazah prayer service at Freedom Hall on the grounds of the Kentucky Exposition Center. The Janazah prayer was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. On June 10, 2016, the funeral procession passed through the streets of Louisville ending at Cave Hill Cemetery, where his body was interred during a private ceremony. A public memorial service for Ali at downtown Louisville's KFC Yum! Center was held during the afternoon of June 10. Billy Crystal gave the eulogy. The pallbearers included Will Smith, Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson, with honorary pallbearers including George Chuvalo, Larry Holmes and George Foreman. Ali's memorial was watched by an estimated 1 billion viewers worldwide.

Ali really was larger than life and it is hard to believe he is gone. It was so sad to watch his health deteriorate when you could still see his fighting spirit in his eyes. What a lovely cemetery site he has with such a beautiful epitaph. RIP Ali you will always be the greatest.

I had just gotten off my nursing shift early Sunday morning at a hospital in San Franciso, and was standing outside waiting on a taxi. I saw a man jogging up the opposite of the street. He saw me so he jogged across the street and stopped in front of me. He pulled back the Hoodi from his head and it was Mr. Ali. He shook my hand we had a few words. Then he jogged off. My taxi arrived a couple of minutes later and I told the driver about meeting him. The driver gave me a free ride home because I allowed him to take a detour to see if we could find him. We did find him and the driver had the opportunity to speak to him for a couple of minutes. I regret not asking for an autograph. Next morning there was a news story about Ali ditching his security team to jog around the city.

I wanna thxu, Scott for allowing me to view this site. There has never, been another champ and humanitarian like Ali. He'll be the greatest forever to me and here's why. When i was a young boy i had to defend myself in school. One day after, a school brawl. An admn..said. "hey boy you a good boxer". "You move like the champ"..ALI. I did nt pay him no attention. Later, i seen him fighting on tv and he won. He had an impact on my life to be great at whatever, i do. I became great myself in sports. Today, he's on my sports wall in a large custom picture frame. I pray that God, has mercy on his soul. Love, you my brother. Shalom.

Great video...I live in Louisville and I have a close relationship with Muhammad Ali's brother Rahman. We both have the same name and I used to see him and Muhammad Ali together all the time when I was a kid in the late 80's. I saw Rahman Ali in the goodwill store a few weeks ago and we talked for like 15 mins. He is not doing good. If you ever want to meet him please send me a message, it would be good to get his story told before it is too late. I lot of people don't even know he has a brother living in poverty in Louisville...they look just alike, but you can tell Rahman's health is going down hill. He uses a walker and I think he has parkinson's as well. I can send you my email if you would like to talk to him.

I live on the same street as Cave hill cemetery is on ( Cherokee Rd) & it was unbelievable what this street looked like on the day of his burial, not to mention when Will Smith was here visiting where Ali lived when he was younger...I actually have a head stone there when it's my turn to accend to the spirit in the sky! Gr8 video Scott! 🤘🤘
