@nickmakura45921 күн бұрын
First of all, INdiana Jones ISN'T a static character. Indiana Jones isn't just about a man who doesn't believe in magic. In fact by Last Crusade, I don't think it's even necessarily that he doesn't believe, he just puts fact before fiction. Like, even though Skully knows that Aliens exist, she's still gonna argue with Mulder that it MIGHT be a guy. The character development in those movies is different in every one. In Raiders of the Lost Ark, it's about Indiana Jones reconnecting with Marion after so long, and the struggles they face to reconcile. Especially after Indiana Jones really messed up the first time... In Temple of Doom, it's about Indiana Jones setting aside his want for fortune and glory. The Last Crusade is about Indiana Jones reconnecting with his father. The kicker is, he doesn't even realize his father is so incredibly similar to him.

Indy isn't an expert marksman, fighter, or even quick on his feet. He's just an adventurer/archaeologist who has an endless amount of tools that he uses to his advantage. The developers understood this and made the game's combat so fun and engaging. Just finished the game and did it prioritizing stealth. Now playing it again and will put emphasis on throwing hands next.

This is a great video, but I don’t really agree with the statement that Indy is a static character. In my opinion, Indiana Jones does have an arc if you watch the series in chronological order. We begin with the Prologue of the Last Crusade. In 1912, Indy is a brash 13 year old boy scout who strongly believes in doing the right thing. "That cross is an important artifact, it belongs in a museum”. After outrunning the thieves and giving the cross to the sheriff, Indy is taught his first big lesson: being a boy scout (figuratively at least) won’t get him far. The cross is handed over to the diggers, he loses all he worked for, and the leader, named Fedora (he was Abner Ravenwood in the original script) serves as an inspiration to him, literally copying his look. A few adventures and a break up with a 17 year old Marion later, and we cut to Temple of Doom. In 1935, were introduced to an Indy whose very different than where we left off. He doesn’t believe in any magic or religion, is misogynistic (as seen with his relationship with Willie), and would rather sell a priceless artifact to get a diamond, than put it in a museum. The only reason he goes to Pankot Palace is because he believes the Shankara stones will bring him fortune and glory. But just like every Indy story, there is always someone worse than him, a dark reflection of him, that forces him to do the right thing. By the end of Temple of Doom, not only has he been enlightened by the power of Shiba, but he also realizes that fortune and glory isn’t always the best option. Cut to Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Indy is in an interesting place. In 1936, Indy is starting to focus more on the museum and the actual preservation of artifacts, but he still seeks the fortune and glory the Ark of the Covenant will bring him, and still hasn't fully grasped that most magical religious artifacts are quite real. By the end of the film, not only has he reunited with Marion, the one women he truly shared a kindred spirit with (after his less than satisfying relationship with Willie, Marion was probably a breath if fresh air to Jones), but he also has realized the danger of a device like the Ark. Then we come to the first act of Last Crusade in 1938, where we find Indy on a ship trying to reclaim the cross of Coranado: his first artifact, the one that got him into the business. And he says this: “It belongs in a museum!” He has come full circle to being the boy scout he used to be. Notice that the only artifact Indy ever recovers in the series is the cross, the one he truly just wanted for the museum, the place where it belonged. In both Last Crusade and Crystal Skull, Indy isn’t searching for fortune and glory. He’s going on an adventure to help a friend in need, and ultimately fills a hole in his past. For Last Crusade it was helping his father in his quest for the grail and patching up his strained relationship with him. For Crystal Skull, it was about helping Oxley, which lead to him finally confronting the idea of marriage with Marion and reuniting with Mutt, his own son. Crystal Skull is sort of an inverted Last Crusade, with the son seeking his father's help. I don’t know how Dial of Destiny fits into all this, since it basically undid a lot of the evolution in Crystal Skull, but I’ll find a way. To me, the Indiana Jones movies are great because of how the adventure changes Jones. All of them affect him differently, and by the end of each, he has grown in some way. This is just fan speculation though.

@derickwest699621 күн бұрын
Wait so the guy Indiana copies his look after in the beginning of the last crusade was originally named Abner Ravenwood? I did not know that. But in the kingdom of the crystal skull Indiana says to Mutt "Marion Ravenwood is your mother?" Then when trying to get through to professor oxley he tells him "Ox they're going to kill Abner's little girl". (Speaking about Marion) So if they had not changed Indiana's inspiration name then the grave robber at the beginning of the last crusade would of been Marion's dad. Meaning Indiana's future love interest and later wife's dad would not only be his future father-in-law but also his first adversary.
@jackofalltraits214521 күн бұрын
@@derickwest6996 Exactly. In Raiders they mention that indy studied under Professor Abner Ravenwood at the university of Chicago. The hadn't spoken to each other since 1926 because Indy had a relationship with Mario. Henry Jr. was 27 while Marion was 17, so yeah...pretty icky and a good reason to have a falling out with your mentor.
@SmithYorkinster18 күн бұрын
I was just about to comment the same thing before seeing someone else had noted it. Will check the video you posted also, never seen it before. Regarding the last point about Dial of Destiny, there is also some character growth shown in another area, and you see it with the way he opens up to people and his sincere about his emotions. He deals with Wu Han's death in Temple of Doom, by simply never mentioning it ever again. When he thinks Marion died, he simply tries to drink his grieff away and the only thing he says to his good friend Sallah is "Marion is dead". Then with the context given by Crystal Skull (and that ironically is a lot enhanced in the Great Circle) look at how he sabotaged his own relationship with Marion between Raiders and Crusade by not speaking about his fears and simply running away. Afterwards he was still unable to speak with his father openly when the two were in the Zepplin in Last Crusade even if he shows that he has a lot of bottle up emotions. It is very obvious that he has a lot of problems opening up to people (which would make sense with someone who grew with a father who was so distant). Then in Dial of Destiny, he talks very openly with Helena with which he has just a pretty surface level relationship, despite the fact that she is his god-daughter, about the death of Mutt, which in my opinion is the most emotionnaly vulnerable he was in the entire saga, and gives us, in my opinion, a good scene in the context of the entire saga, in what is an overall mediocre movie.
@jackofalltraits214518 күн бұрын
@@SmithYorkinster Thanks and that's a very interesting point you bring up. Dial of Destiny was a very mixed bag for me, as someone who loves almost any Indy content, but that scene not only served as a great explanation for Mutts absence, but really did show a more vulnerable side of Indy the audience doesn't usually see. And that really stood out to me as one of the best dialogue scenes in a Indy film. Dial of Destiny may be flawed but the nuggets of greatness are in there. Like Indy's work as an archeologist, you just need to dig a little deeper and scratch beneath the surface.

I think Dial of Destiny is just one of those films where the ideas included in the film arent bad, just the execution was. - Indiana jones is now an old man. the plot needs to center around the passage of time. -> Make the macguffin time related. -> Why not make it open with young indiana, en then make a hard cut to and older more fragile indy. To show passage of time. -> Make it about how he dealt with losing his son. -> Make it about how marriages are complex and hard. All possibly good ideas, but just executed in way that was meh. Maybe the problem conceptually would just always be: there shouldn't be an indy film where Indiana jones is old. It kind of defeats the purpose of not done very carefully. It also opened pandoras box of deepfaking the whole opening. Which to me felt of. It felt like Disney most litterly grabbing a character from beyond to grave to force the character to dance for the Disney overlords.

I Consider this game apart of the Original Trilogy that's how good it is, so I guess that would make it a Quadrilogy now. So now i hope MachineGames and the writer who wrote this story stick around and do another Trilogy set after The Last Crusade so that would be 4 games total, do we need it no, but do I want it hell yes, I would love to see the next game and Indy goes on another Adventure with his Dad just before Indy Joins the O.S.S., and I'd love to see two more games after that and while they're static serials I do want to see each game as it gets closer and closer to Crystal Skull bridge that gap. I would even love another game featuring Mutt before he Enlisted and was K.I.A. to bridge that gap between Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny so maybe by making these games MachineGames can make the two worst Indy stories better with these other stories around them.

The only issue I have with it is where you stated Indiana Jones has the same character arc in every movie where he starts out not believing in some mythical object or power and then he goes through something which makes him end up believing. He actually has a few lines in the great circle where he mentions or alludes to the events of raiders and what he witnessed with the arc, which is good, but it makes it hard to believe that he would be skeptical about anything ever again after the events of this game.

Dial of Destiny should have ended Indiana Jones with him staying in the past. It was poetic, his life interest of history making him part of it. But the studio seemed to have sent the director a note of having to make the ending open, so out of the blue she punch him and drags him back to his time by the argument of changing time too much, although they already did by going back in time, showing them technology. Like, imagine a Marion epilogue with her seeing something in a museum and it's his damn hat or something. Hell what an ending that would have been.

I’d say a minor but important part of the great circle is the focus on Marion. I’m a big Indy fan my main gripe with Crystal Skull is the CGI but Harrison is Indiana in both movies. Dial of Destiny major down was Phoebe Waller Bridge if you had just replaced her role with Short Round a kind of adopted son from the beginning we never see in any of the sequels it would have worked 10 fold. John Williams kills it in Dial and Skull but Indy is so much more cooler if he’s in the 30s/40s. Anyway I don’t fundamentally disagree but if there is any connection between the films Indy is always leaving close ones chasing the past. He leaves Short Round, Marion, and his Dad. He makes up with Marion in Skull and Dial it would have been perfect if he’d done same with Short Round.

Ok, I agree the game is an extremely faithful adaptation and I really like it, but to say that Indiana Jones is a static character is way off. He goes through a lot of character development, so much so that it’s the center of the stories in the three good films. The movies aren’t about the McGuffins or the bad guys, it’s about how Indy becomes a better person than he was and how he becomes more and more of his ideal for serving the past and protecting people from evil. The first movie in the timeline, we see he’s doing shady deals and motivated by greed but it has him freeing child slaves and fighting people stronger than him to protect his friends, even at the cost of the prize he was going for. The second movie we see he’s moved away from doing stuff on the black market and is questing for the pursuit of knowledge and his love of history, but his old past, represented by Beloque, is trying to drag him down from his heightened reputation, which he overcomes by being more of a good person than the Nazis and being more faithful to the history by knowing not to look at the arc and prioritizing saving Marion over his curiosity about the arc. The last crusade, he starts off looking for his father, but as you can see, a part of him wants the grail as represented in the striving to retrieve the map from Marcus instead of going for his dad’s diary. It’s disguised as concern for Marcus but it’s also about beating the Nazis in the race to the grail for him, which he learns to let go by letting the grail fall into the void. Indi becomes a better person in each of the actually good movies. He is NOT stagnant. Indiana Jones is like Rambo. People think he’s one dimensional because he fits into a trope, but he actually is a very well rounded and well written character.

This game was very good but I still felt like Indy was kind of a pushover compared to the original trilogy of movies. He was commanded by Gina throughout most of the game and saved by her numerous times. Should have been the other way around but Indy only saves her one time to my knowledge and then she instantly tells him “I don’t need to be saved!” And then commands him to do what he should do. I would give the game a 7.5/10. Better than anything Indy has had in a while but not perfect

It was not perfect. The story was fine. The characters were mostly OK. The biggest thing is that it was significantly better than the last two actual movies. It had the right feel. With some polishing a decent movie could have been made from the premise of this game.

@ if it were another game, I’d probs would agree, but I guess you can call it a knee-jerk reaction to seeing others giving criticism, valid or unnecessary personal nitpicks, I just gotta defend Halo Infinite, like a Hunter from Left 4 Dead spawn-camping at the nearest crescendo event or just before a safe-room of sorts, if that analogy makes sense.

@randymarsh693125 күн бұрын
@@adamouellette5971 Exactly. I found it to be a pretty spot on example of how many relationships work in the real world with people who are hyper-focused on their careers. Gina spurned Indy the exact same way Indy spurned Marion, believing there was greater importance in her career as a journalist than starting a relationship with Indy. The character of Indy isn’t even really supposed to have a “love interest” in the first place. He’s the world’s ultimate adventurer that can’t be tamed.

“Better than the last two movies.” Jesus Christ. Stop. Dial is wonderful and tells a far more original, interesting and cohesive story than Great Circle. Great Circle is wonderful, but its narrative utterly collapses in the final act and it doesn’t have anything to say with the character. Just another casual who knows nothing about Indy making a bullshit video to tear down the last two films. It’s exhausting.

I feel like you can prop up the dial of destiny without feeling like you need to tear down the guy making the video, or question his knowledge about Indy as if he isn’t a very simple character that needs to be studied.
