As a locksmith who's specialty is antique locks I can't tell you how much I appreciate this video. Mostly because of the obvious love you have for the subject. You'd be surprised how many lockpickers and even locksmiths I've met who have NO IDEA who Hobbs was but ever since first reading about the events surrounding Hobbs, Chubb, and Bramah and the 1851 World's Fair in Locks, Safes, and Security I've loved the story, and the designs involved. There, btw, seems to still be a bit of a grudge held by at least SOME at Bramah even today. Years ago, I came across a small Bramah 5 slider lock circa 1870 that the customer wanted a key made for. This was the first Bramah I'd ever had a chance to work on, so I figured the first step of course was calling Bramah to see if I could get an original key blank. Now, at the time I was working for the oldest continuous family owned locksmith shop in the state of GA. and had explained that, but I was told, "We do not sell key blanks to the general public." At first I thought there had been a misunderstanding, so I explained more fully that I was an antiques locksmith of almost 10 years, and working in a shop that had been in continuous business under the same family for more than 130 years, and that I could send along any proof they required, and that the lock I was working on was from the 1870s... I was then told, (in a tone that I can only describe as "the most British I've ever experienced") "Please understand, sir, that for all intents and purposes according to our company, you ARE the general public... but for 200 Euros we'll gladly key it for you if you ship it, insured of course, to our factory"... lol After picking my jaw off the floor...I considered other options. The problem being that because of the stiff spring in the lock, just about all modern (cast) barrel key blanks were entirely too soft to make a key I thought would last... I ended up having to lathe one out by chucking a piece of cold rolled steel rod into a drill and using a Dremel and files to size it. It took me three tries and almost a month of working nights on it to get a working finished key. Of course in that time, I also picked it a few times... Partially because "How many times am I gonna get the chance to pick a Bramah from the same time period" but mostly that that I could say that "Members of the American 'general public' are STILL capable of picking Bramahs given enough time with the lock..." LMAO

I managed to acquire a couple of old Bramah box locks recently and face the same key making situation. I'm encouraged by your success. :)

@PM Conspiracy I haven't picked one in 5 years. I'm still awful yes. Last one took 3 days of chipping away at it. There's probably a lot of new techniques out now. Feel free to share!

Great presentation however there are quite a few inaccuracies, Hobbs DID "Open" the Bramah Challenge Padlock but many people of the past and present doubt that he actually picked it, Hobbs picked open the Chubb "New Patent" lock which was quite old by then and didn't have many of the features of the "Definitive Patent" Detector lock, Hobbs tripped the Detector many times but due to a design flaw he could reset the detector with a piece of wire, Hobbs was challenged to pick the Chubb ----> Cont->

He knew the lock portion, which is why we tuned in. The Agricultural aspect doesn't necessarily matter. Heck, most city people don't know how food gets to them anyway, so I won't fault him for that.

lock don't matter if you can just go through the door or the window. The way i see it a good lock only keeps a honest criminal out. The other criminals will just smash your windows or break the door down.

We ya, but even during the reaping part it seemed like he loved what he was talking about. I’m not say it’s a bad thing he didn’t understand, I’m saying I didn’t care that he didn’t, because I was still drawn in by his excitement.

"Bank Lock" which had only just been made to which he declined, Hobbs was also challenged to pick the Cotterill "Climax Detector Lock" which he accepted but failed to pick,Mr Hobbs was offered other locks to pick including the Price "Ne Plus Ultra" but still couldn't pick them, nearly ALL of Hobbs lock mechanisms were picked open from the "protectors" to the "Paurotoptic",So I ask you,Why ONLY focus on the successes and not the failures of Hobbs? I believe there is malicious intent in the format.
