This is actually one of the most helpful explanations of how discs are released. He described every issue new players encounter when trying throw putters.

i love how you explain things like they seem so simple yet so elegantly where it feels like how have we not been doing this.

I’m about 2 weeks into this sport. And I’m terrible. This video series was exactly what I needed!! Thank you!

The rule of thumb makes a ton of intuitive sense. I know for sure I am squeezing the disc and causing tension. Thank you!
@dgspindoctor Жыл бұрын
Little tension is good, but don't choke the disc. It has to fly free, unbruised and without a trauma.

Great advice! Staying loose is crucial indeed. Looking forward to more videos.

Makes so much sense; your rounding if you need a power grip on Putter,Mid and Fairway Driver! What a great test to see if your rounding. If you need a power grip on a putter your certainly rounding.

Love it. You got a subscribe out of me. Laughed pretty hard at you laying out to catch that ultimate disc. I deeply appreciate you doing this for us!!!

Man I feel like the algorithm is giving me perfectly timed videos for wonky things I've observed in my form.

Thanks, I've found the fan type grip essential for throwing putters straight on layups. If I get too many fingers around the rim, the disc doesn't come out in time.
@SamuelB- Жыл бұрын
I've learned to use a modified fan grip for more touchy approach shots with putters. I tried it extensively for driving (putters/midranges), however for me personally I find the powergrip is more reliable. Especially when playing in cold or wet weather the plastic gets way too slick. Could be better with GStar or other softer plastics, but I mostly only have fairways/drivers in that category. BTW after watching one of your videos with Ace man, i saw you guys throwing Gstar wraiths and destroyers. Those disc (and other gstar discs) have now become a staple in my bag, I really love them even during the summer, little more understable and I feel like I can get a better grip of them. :) Keep up the good work! :)

Love your explanations. Explain this: How tight do you hold the disc (relaxed as possible, but how much as possible without coming out); does this change during the throw? In other words are you pinching harder at the hit? Letting go at the hit? I have heard all the possible answers to this question in a vague way. Since the disc is pivoting around your index finger, I assume you don't let go completely, but how do you facilitate that pivot? How strong is a strong enough grip and how do you practice it? Thanks so much for all of your efforts
@dgspindoctor Жыл бұрын
The hand will naturally grip stronger before the relese, if you don't try to control it. You should neither try to release nor hold on to the disc. If you actually think about when to let go or not, you are both wasting effort and concentrating on the thing that should happen intuitively. Grip the disc strong enough that it doesn't slip, but loose enough that it can release. Just like all the other sports where you have to throw something.

Good information! Started throwing everything with a grip similar to your fan, just the middle is out. I might try your "rule of thumb" test on my drivers to see if I can find a comfortable power grip!

Nice! Espcially for me the pinky is just interfering with the smooth release.

I recently found your channel. I think it is one of the best, and most accurate. I have experimented with grips many times since the 1970s. I prefer versions of the power grip. BTW it is possible to squeeze the thumb and index finger together hard, yet the wrist is loose. Not easy for a beginner. Muscle efficiency, only flexing the absolute minimum muscles, just when needed, takes time to develop in every skill. Ex, Beginners often bite their lip or stick out their tongue when throwing. Eventually, fluidity overtakes unnecessary flexing. Back to the value of the power grip. 1. No slippage of disc and loss of force. Clean, consistent energy transfer from hand to disc. 2. If you remove the pinky, and put it on the outside of the rim, you can hold the disc without the thumb. Also, There's no chance the pinky gets caught under the rim and changes the flight. 3. You can choose to frontload or backload the grip without changing it. For high speed throws, the emphasis is on the index finger. A single strong pinch point and pivot. For slow throws and control, move the emphasis to the ring finger. And, you can choose an in-between hold by emphasizing the middle finger pressure. This technique enables flexible tradeoffs between power and control, to make any shot in DG. IMO, regarding grip advice, best to have clear objectives of the grip, then choose what works for you, to meet those objectives. This preferable over prescriptive advice. Keep the great content coming! Impressive clarity and thoughtful.

Absolutely true, I agree with everything.
@corrinradd9235 Жыл бұрын
So it sounds like you don’t recommend squeezing hard at the pinch point? Because being loose is more important?
@dgspindoctor Жыл бұрын
Absolutely not squeezing ON PURPOSE. You have to trust your body to work on time. If you try to squeeze the fingers at the exact moment of release, well... good luck with that. Also, if you squeeze the fingers hard before that, it will make your arm stiff. Keep the arm loose, let the disc hang in your fingers like they are hooks. And throw. You fingers will squeeze on time if you let them.

What difference does the thumb location have? I keep mine about where the rim meets the flight plate, but I see a lot of people having it further in towrds the centre.
@dgspindoctor Жыл бұрын
Good question. I have thought about a lot, but can't find any reason to change the position from where it feels natural.

Starting over to rework your form how far should one throw a putter before they move on to faster discs in your opinion?
@dgspindoctor Жыл бұрын
Oh, it depends so much on your body. I think it's not about distance, but overall comfort and being efficient with what you have.

I am curious about the thumb placement. Many of you better players move that thumb toward the center of the disc. What is the reasoning? How do you have a pivot point. Index being on the rim with no opposing force?

No need to answer as I saw someone posted the question already

I found your channel a couple months ago. Love the content. Can I just suggest that instead of trying to blur your personal info on the discs, just put some black electrical tape of them while you're recording. Anyways, looking forward to more vids. Thanks bro.

Thanks! I actually tried to cover them with a pen, but it still wasn't enough so I decided to blur them afterwards. Was purely a mistake, not planned at all.

Previously I threw every kind of disc with a 3 finger powergrip. Recently I tried different kind of modified fan grip with putters and midranges. I put only the index finger under the rim. The middle finger and the ring finger rest under the flight plate. The little finger isn't touching the disc at all just because I have relatively small hands. It's more comfortable that way. Changing the grip to that gave my putters and midranges way more spin and the also fly further!
@dgspindoctor Жыл бұрын
Great! Experiment freely, don't believe there is one truth in anything.
@Needled88 Жыл бұрын
Fangripping also makes easier to keep the disc nose down, my grip is almost the same, but also my pinky is just resting there, so actually im just gripping with my index finger, and others just helps to keep the disc stable stance.
