3 whole generations who were schooled since childhood that you were supposed to grow up to be an employee found out what the Boomer generation hid from them: You can just run your own show instead of running someone else's while they get to keep all the $$. If an employer can fill your empty spot within a couple days and your replacement can work just as efficient if not better than you, you're not underpaid. Your job just doesn't require much skill. I make $17/hr to simply put a box in a container. Instead of being angry at the companies that are paying us, I think we should shift our anger towards the companies that overcharge us on certain necessities based on the average amount of money we all make. I don't like the fact that I have to pay damn near $5 per gallon of gas out her in California but it's not my jobs fault.
@prodby2j
@prodby2j 2 жыл бұрын
@NarrowRoy CrashDummie I get that but can you really be upset if the rich people you hate are the ones providing millions of jobs to the poor? You're the one that has to submit a job application and if you feel that job doesn't compensate you enough for the work you put in then go find one that does. They can raise the minimum wage to $20/hr nation wide, but what difference would it make if gas prices, food, and rent continue to rise? I don't think people understand that the system was never meant for us to be financially free. Small businesses are being forced to shutdown due to these new unfeasible wage laws and big corporations will continue to generate billions in revenue.
@prodby2j
@prodby2j 2 жыл бұрын
@NarrowRoy CrashDummie lol as I stated before, I make $17/hr.. I'm not even middle class bro. I'm not trying to defend the rich, but I think what alot of people don't get is that we're not that special.. If a fucking robot can do the exact same task as you at a much higher efficiency rate, who are you to say you're deserving of more. I see alot of people at my job half-assing their work and complaining just like you. They come and go.. and somebody who actually wants to work fills their spot within days. Sure a business is nothing without the workers, but a worker is easily disposable. You don't think these rich guys have the ability to gather a bunch of dudes from 3rd world countries to come down here and do our jobs for us? This is why I believe we should be focusing on the rich people that are overcharging us because sitting on your ass while bills are constantly stacking up is just counter-productive. Poor people shouldn't have egos bigger than their wallets, but that's just my opinion.

@@prodby2j exactly. You have two option. Get out of the rat race and be the master rat. Or go for greener pastures whether for better pay, work life balance etc. The girl thinks too highly for people with skills. How confident are you that you are irreplaceable regardless of your level of skills? Unless you have a set of skill that none of other have, or rarely have, of course you can demand from your employer. And employer, being the one who writes your paycheck can decide to give in or not. It's a simple economic of demand and supply.

Boomer here. I know the usual stereotype we fall into in the minds of millennial folks, and younger. But I have little experience with that stereotype. My father was a butcher providing for a woman and three children. We had enough, but that is all. My wife grew up in a dying coal mining town. Her father never learned to read or write. She was often on the edge of starvation. I worked my way through college and graduated in 1975. That is approximately when all the downsizing and offshoring began. I've spent over forty years coping with plant shutdowns, oil busts, corporate bankruptcies, mass layoffs and long stints in the unemployment line. In the process, I've kept four children fed, clothed, housed, doctored, and so on. I'd get thrown out of a factory on my face, then go home and tell my family how tight things were going to be. I very much understand what problems the millenials face. So very many things seem out of their reach. Some of us Boomers lived luxuriously in the suburbs. But very many of us did not. In America, you truly might be the first generation to be less prosperous than the previous one through no fault of your own. I know this because my own children, hard workers that they are, still need some financial help.

Here's my take: For well over 95% of human *evolutionary* history, we have operated under a master/apprenticeship relationship. You went into a craft that you wanted, or especially needed, to go into, and you had direct contact with your direct superior at pretty much all times, as they doubled as your instructor, aimed at guiding you to match their own skill or even surpass them. And as they were the master of their craft, you absolutely respected them for their capabilities, and you felt yourself inspired directly to strive to be like them. They were passionate about making sure you were skilled in this craft, and you carried on that passion. And this is how human psychology has thrived for untold consecutive *millennia.* Modern corporations: Barely see our boss like once or twice a month, boss barely knows we exist unless *their* boss tells them they need to yell at someone. Yeah, I wonder where all the employee loyalty went. And this isn't even getting into how not-suited-for-human-psychology our schooling systems are.

This is a brilliant observation. I think the second part of that, is that it's always been natural to outgrow being an apprentice after 10-30 years of experience. However, our system of big corporations doesn't allow for that outgrowth, nor are adults truly getting on the job training starting in their teens to make a 10 to 30-year apprenticeship meaningfully helpful.

Nobody talking about the Real reason corps are forcing "back to the office". Real estate. Rich managers and executives who own houses near the office don't want their homes to depreciate in value - if the peons could work from anywhere and moved away. This is the reason every company that put out surveys had a majority if not 95% of employees say they would prefer full time remote work. Yet the higher ups who make the decisions have a house that's the shortest commute from office buildings. Those 5% are making the decision to screw the rest of everyone else not because offices create a 'collaborative' environment. It's selfish evil greed. Force all other workers to risk a car accident every day, pollute the environment, clog traffic, and pay unaffordable rents because they're financially secure but can never have enough. Do those surveys again, but link responses with their address and if they own or rent a house. You'll see who the minority is that is making the call to "bring employees back" and why!

It makes no sense to leave your computer at home, go on an unpaid commute, only to go to another computer at the office. That's a paranoid manager who likes to "play boss" making you come into the office. When we were allowed to work remotely 10 years ago, productivity shot up 30% which means more profits for the company. They are either too stupid or unwilling to figure that out, no overhead, less stressed out employees having to shell out money for $3.00 a gallon gas and sitting in horrible traffic like we have in Houston. A 10 minute drive can easily take 20 min, 45 if there is a wreck. The employee is already stressed out by the time they get to work from sitting in a traffic jam and paying for gas they can't afford, when it is all completely unnecessary, just to get to work to sit at a computer you were already working on at home, just so some paranoid "manager" can watch over you all day to "make sure you're working." Toxic managers are also rife. Nobody wants to work for a company that doesn't respect them enough to tell an angry/aggressive customer to calm down or leave. Or a boss who keeps piling work on you, like loading down a donkey, until you break. "No" is a powerful word. Don't be ashamed to use it. If people left jobs more often, it would force workplaces to improve. It would also force workplaces to offer higher pay to increase the chances of people staying as it's more economical to keep a worker than to retrain a new. I worked my ass off, missed important milestones with my family, stayed overtime, came on on my day off, worked without getting paid, etc. The pandemic showed me I was just a body filling a space. My work requires me to work with a lot of people one on one and when we raised concerns about getting covid we were told to be quiet and not wear masks or gloves because we would make customers “uncomfortable”. There was a weekend where me and all my coworkers had fevers over 101 and we couldn’t go home. After work two of us went to urgent care and when we were shut down and then opened again we followed the bare minimum of covid rules and regulations because again, we don’t want to make customers uncomfortable. And we were encouraged to schedule clients for after we closed who didn’t want to wear a mask and liked yelling at us like we made the virus.

Most people don't know this but most employers are just narcissists who overestimate themselves. This can be used against them. Even I'm amazed at how clueless they actually are. I don't work hard because on my salary it would be pointless. I love myself more than I love my bosses and refuse to do any task that I think is too stressful. Sorry boss. Workers who kept their jobs, working from home or on furlough learned a number of lessons during the Pandemic lows: They learned about flexible working, working from their own space & during hours they choose...& they liked it. They learned just how much working in the office was costing them & how much money they saved by not commuting...& they liked it. They learned to reconnect with people in their smaller bubbles...& they liked it. They learned that they had little or nothing in common with most of their co-workers & they liked not having to connect with them while being nice to people they really don't care too much about. They learned to enjoy home time...& they liked it. They do not miss the "cube farm" they do not enjoy the boss hanging around them scrutinizing everything they do & say. Lastly they have found out that money has been drastically devalued by money printing over the last 18 months, by as much as 25%. If employers want their workers they have to figure out how to incorporate these things & they also need to pay more money for that work!

I don't have to imagine. I had to skip breakfast for a decade...because I couldn't afford 3 meals a day working 16 hour days 6-7 days a week. For months on end I had a Crack or hole at the bottom of my shoes 👞 and it sucks when it rains and my socks got all wet... And I couldn't afford a new pair until I skipped a few more meals to buy one.

The underlying, underlying problem is that authority wants to hold onto power & control. They don't want people to learn how to think. This is true for parents, schools, and governments. Good news is you can teach yourself how to think! And you'll have a better life for it!

You think already. You don’t need to teach yourself to think. What you do need to do is teach yourself is critical reasoning skills so that you won’t be duped by liars and conmen. Schools can provide case examples so that you think through the issues.

@@sw6118 I disagree... critical reasoning IS a part of the thought process. Ppl DO need to learn how to think critically. But they must be taught, it's not an innate process. I agree with you that kids must be taught to see thru the smokescreens and gaslighting and encouraged to know their worth. The critical thinking must primarily come from home, not school imo. But honestly, parents seem to struggle to do a good job b/c they're in the rat race and when they're at home they spend down time w/ electronics, or wine/beer, or toking that smoke, and not parenting. It's tough out there! I feel for the families and what they're going thru.

Excellent comment! The Feds only want us to be intelligent enough to do whatever stupid job it is we wind up with after graduation from high school or college. The inception of the useless Department of Education (Carter administration) began a steady decline in the US public education system. Kicking that department to the curb is long overdue. Fortunately, with the Internet, there is an enormous amount of free information available to us. (former teacher; three continents)

"But the customer is always right!" This is a stupid mentality that is causing a lot of burn out in service jobs. Its just a license for the bad customers to act like children just to get their way and it takes a toll. Prior to the pandemic, it was expected in my job that you could never tell anyone no even if the request was ridiculous or something we didn't do. If my pre pandemic job tried to get me back, I would say no. It wasn't worth it. I'm going into teaching since if all I can do with a marketing degree is work with overgrown children, I'd rather teach high school students since I can tell them no sometimes.

A win-win for sure-- too sad the Employer couldn't see that. I was definitely more productive working at home...often beginning work earlier and before I knew it, it was time to take a lunch break. It was fun to quickly step out to the nearby gym to challenge myself for a good 45 min work out, then going back home to finish my day. I felt more free and in charge of my life. Companies need to really access who WFH can be best for and go with it. Granted, some seem to really need/prefer the social environment of workmates in order to be productive. Others may be okay with seeing them online and on the weekends!

With modern technology alot of people don't need to come to the office. We shouldn't force so many people to live in the city when people have to commute more than an hour each way and only the wealthiest can afford housing. You can have the best job in the world and you're still going to hate it if you have a super long commute and you can't afford more than a run down shack. Allowing these people to work in the country and reduce city over-crowding is a very good thing. I'd live in the country if I could find work.

That is the real truth. One full time job, monopolizes your time, gives one entity too much control, is demeaning and the "benefits" don't actually cover anything. You have to slave away at the minimum wage before qualifying for retirement and the moment you do, they begin trying to get you to move on, from boredom, minimal pay raises or none at all, while cost of living keeps going up. Why do you think we are importing so many low-wage workers through the open border?

When they asked me to come back after laying me off without pay they changed my schedule to work 5 days a week instead of 4 days and 10 hour shift. I told them okay if you give my my raise. Of course he just laughed at me and I told him I am not coming back.

So, they will now hire an inexperienced younger person or immigrant, at lower wage, but with an impressive title (ever worked as a Supervisor, Department Head, Manager?If so, you know that the job is just more work for the same or less pay*salary than the folks you are overseeing.)These people will be in a position to hire, eventually and we already know how that works out.

I have stories for days about quitting jobs where I was unvalued, underpaid, and ignored by team members. One time I worked in an office with all women and they would ignore me and tried to leave me in the office alone while they went out to the company party (3rd week of being there). I quit the day they had the party, if they don't have to be in the office then neither would I. I was upset at myself that I didn't quit sooner bc I spent 6 hrs daily just to commute to a toxic workplace filled with micro aggressions. I'm just glad to see others following suite.

I have always said I would rather work with an office full of men then women any day! It is like junior high school, they have their cliques, only talk to you when they want to get information out of you to use against you, I could not stand when they would hang around my desk and blab on and on about themselves and their problems, yet, never asked me how was I doing, etc. And the things they would tell me! No shame, none. Such personal things that should be kept private. I am not your counselor, stop mistaking my kindness for weakness, I know you do not give one flip about me, that was obvious when I donated money for office bday/ shower, whatever party and no one did jack shit for mine. It is the most ridiculous , toxic, negative environment. I could not wait to get out of there and go hit my gym or just go home and take my dogs for a nice walk outside. And the older these women get the worse they get. You have grandma Gladys being the office bully, it's pathetic they have so little going on their lives outside of work, they feel they have to come to work and make it a shit show bully routine, day after day. they are sick people. It goes on everywhere and not one supervisor puts a real stop to it. I had one that did but she was rare. Most let it go on and on because you need actual, physical proof, not just words against you. Who needs that crap?? No thanks. They can take their toxic environment where they let the mediocre, brain dead , lush crowd run the show and put it where the sun does not shine. I had better conversations with my dog than with most of those types, lol. No Thanks!
