The Great Schism: Greek East vs Latin West.
A look at the breakdown in the relationship between the churches of Rome and Constantinople, which included petty personality conflicts, diverging political interests, and a few fundamental disagreements. We'll also look at how and why the rift has never been healed despite repeated attempts for the past 1,000 years.

(Another) Outstanding lecture! ...Loved the explanation of the how they designated the "Vatican II" council, and the Seven Hills of Rome, as well as the distinction between a Basilica and Cathedrals. ...Fascinating history, even for those of us with a secular orientation. Hope we can all share these with others.

Thank you for the detailed explanations. I agree about the question and answer session. Perhaps to ask a question there should be a microphone mounted in a central location and this is explained prior to the beginning of the video. Thank you again.

Because it is one of the first ones they did. Advice: when watching low budget youtube series; its a good idea to look at the date and if its around the time they started doing their show; they are still working out the kinks

I'm torn about these interruptions that do not add to the topic but just say "Oh, this thing you are talking about reminds me of another thing I want to tell you about right now." It's obviously a distraction but also shows genuine interest in history in general. So, I guess the lecturer doesn't want to be be a spoilsport to his engaged audience.

I also have mixed feelings about it, having watched a number of the lectures now. I have to admire the experimental approach, but it certainly does distract and interrupt the flow at times.

In the West, they started to destroy icons, stained glass and statues when Protestant cult emerged in 16th century. The Protestant wars replicated the iconoclast fight in the 8th century. Nothing new.

I have to say, there is nothing about the oriental orthodox church which is 'farther east' than the eastern orthodox church, which is to say, these churches don't lay on a conceptual or theological spectrum

Before the Muslim conquest there was the Roman-Sassanian war, which exhausted both empires. It lasted from 602-629 and by the end, both empires, in order to pat their soldiers raised taxes tremendously, Heraclius even took money from the Church. So after the Muslim conquest of the Levant and Persia 634-650, it was not difficult for Muslim conquerors to lower the taxes slightly (altough still higher than taxes in the year 595, were lower than in 630) So no, they did not lower taxes compared to peacetime taxes in the Roman empire, only compared to war-time taxes( see what John of Nikiou says abouit Muslim taxes). Quite disappointing for a Medievalist.

Thank you for the extra information, that is very helpful, but were the other things in the video wrong or is this single little point and nitpick and detail enough for you to consider all the material discussed worthless for viewers or learners? I'm just curious, if they made lots of other mistakes you picked up on and if you think one such little detail not said exactly in a certain way or leading to a slight error in understanding invalidates everything in the presentation?
@titisuteu

@@aFoxyFox. Wow, I rattled your chain with this one, didn't I? Using descriptors such as nitpicking, implying I said the video was worthless. I just do not think that when he discussed that specific aspect in the presentation that he gave the complete info, which made that part misleading, not the whole video.

@@titisuteu @A Foxy Fox Any historical summary is going to have holes when covering 1000 years of history. With all Antiquity it's a good idea not to think that you know everything and have all of the answers, because the truth of the matter is, all of this history is really sketchy. We are talking about civilizations that don't exist anymore. Yeah the Vatican in the Catholic church is still a thing, as well as Eastern Orthodox; but it's not as though these things happened in the 1970s where we had video cameras, newspapers, and access to the vast historical record; and even if it was, there are many disputed things that happened in the 1970s.
@titisuteu
@titisuteu 2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewisjesus Well that means we cannot say anything about those times. What I wrote is based on a historian's book and he cited primary sources about the taxing. Or should we only believe pro Muslim primary sources?

The Umayyads were Christians, Islam didn’t start till the 8-9th century by the Abbasids in Baghdad, Muslims/Islam did not exist in the 7th century, anti-trinitarian was in vogue in the east under the Umayyads

It's weird how people always pillory the Jehovah witnesses when especially in this context they follow literally the most Orthodox version of the Bible they can. It is why their translation of it sits next to the King James Bible or any other version. It is most valuable because they attempt to go back to the original Greek and translate from there.
@Matthy63
@Matthy63 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe the version of the Bible they use isn't the primary reason they get "pilloried", so much as everything else about the JWs.
@FuzzyDunlots

@@Matthy63 which when compared to something like the Catholics or the Protestants is another really weird fact. The Catholic Church molested 200,000 children in France alone since 1950. You bring up a very good point. Not only are they more Orthodox but their behavior towards their flock and the world makes the rest of these institutions look absolutely insane.
