Steam train races diesel train. Trains running side by side. Train meet at Cass. Shay steam locomotive #2 built by Lima in 1928 races an EMD diesel locomotive BL2 #82 built in 1948. Filmed at Spruce West Virginia on the Cass Scenic Railroad and Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. Filmed July 15, 2017. We rode the steam train from Cass to the race location and the diesel passenger train came from Elkins West Virginia. This is an annual event and all the cabins in Cass were sold out so we stayed at Bear Creek Lodge in Cass which actually has a view of the train station and the live action in Cass. Once again, my money was on the diesel but the diesel continues to lose every year and so did I. Lol. The next day we rode the shay steam passenger train in Durbin West Virginia called the Durbin Rocket. 160.455 . See my video. • Durbin And Greenbrier ... Thanks for watching! Thanks for watching! Hey, I have this video about the Ark that I made and I'm trying to get it to have more thumbs up than thumbs down. Usually I don't care if I get thumbs down but this video was a lot of work and the aetheists gave it a ton of thumbs down. I put it on Facebook and my friends got the thumbs up to pass the thumbs down by 2! Could you give a thumbs up also? Here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXiQdWCsaNOViNU . Thanks for visiting my channel!

How can you be sure it identifies as a steam locomotive? What if its a non binary locomotive? What is a steam train. Are steam trains racist because they use coal, and coals racist?

I have some excellent footage of them with the whistles to post still when I get time. After we rode the train, the next day we chased it a short distance and got it crossing the public roads a few times. I filmed at least 3 of the steamers in action and I filmed the other ones parked. Thanks for watching!

First I am a Shay fan. Second this is not a race, if it was the Shay would lose, it is a geared locomotive and not designed for speed. BUT if you had a tug of war the Shay would walk it as it has far more tractive power. The black smoke is deliberate, it's to make for a better photo, no driver worth his salt would allow that much soot clog the tubes and chimney.
@JawTooth
@JawTooth 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, its more of a thing to keep the railfans happy. You can tell by the sounds that the diesel isn't really trying and they try to cover that fact up with more whistle and horn. Lol. Anyway, thanks for watching! I will be posting a video of the ride behind the shay.

I was watching a British documentary from the 1940s on how to properly stoke a firebox,and the less black smoke the more heat to make steam.

I remember the last days of steam on the Illinois Central. I remember hearing the sound of a steam whistle in the middle of the night. This was about 1953-55. There’s nothing more lonely sounding than a steam whistle in the middle of the night. We lived about a mile from the tracks

Well, diesels horns do echo in the distance, more than a steamer’s whistle though.

It looks like a vertical double action steam engine with small driver wheels and superheated steam with a recovery condenser, very modern for it's day. We still had steam locos in my youth in Canada up to the sixties. I can remember finding coal on the tracks , loading it into my wagon and bringing it home to burn in our parlor stove.

Looks to me like two diesel locomotives versus one steam loco. So good to see a steam loco that 1. runs on coal (and has not been converted to oil and 2. pulls a train without DPU diesel loco assistance. And what can I say. steam wins again.

I do think both are equal in terms of power, motive and beauty. But my heart tells me to look at the diesel locomotive, because it is the embodiment of under appreciation and misrepresentation, especially when it comes to Thomas and Friends, but again I respect peoples opinions.

It's awesome that the steam whistle is a lot louder than the air horn, but as far as a drag race it's not fair because the steam locomotive is a Sheay and they don't go no faster than 12 to 15 miles an hour

Outstanding!! So wish I had time & money to chase trains!! I have an "N" scale Boston & Maine BL-2 !! Although the original issue Baldwin models generally were not equipped with multi-unit lash up ability, some lines did add the ability until more powerful road engines became available. They usually dumped them onto branch lines or switch yard grunts, until they wore out. It's just an interesting design, I keep it just as an example of variation. They're just as rare as the real thing. Since B&M had a ton of branch lines, it made sense they'd use them longer than most. Once the M.U.-able diesels came along, that was pretty much the end of the BL-2's. Thanks so much for catching all these cool trains you spend time finding!! 👍🏻☺️😎🚂🚃🎊

@@JawTooth much appreciated! I’ll take a look as soon as I can. About 12-13 years ago I worked at a car dealership that backed the nearby Canadian National line, and every day either a pair of GMD1s or a GMD1 with a GP9RM would go by doing the local, and I used to make sure I was outside to hear the 567 engines throttle up as they came out of the curve. It was awesome

yeah i hope i will to.i wish i could see 319 once it restored since i used to look at that stream when i was little and wonder what kind of stories she could tell if she could talk thanks to thomas the tank engine back in the 90s lol.i live in ashland and 319 was in russell ky which is the next town over from me when i was a kid and still is now and really want to see her working again since it seems her sister engine 318 will always be in the Huntington WV railroad museum never to run again :'(.but unless i win a contest i think my only chance to see one in action is to win the lottery lmao or have an accident and catch one having to go threw my town like the lake hiawatha had to in the early 90's because it original route was closed down so it had to run threw ashland and russell ky to get to where it needed to be for the end of it railway excursion
