The passenger who ran and was shot was Max Aaronson of Little Rock, Arkansas. He appears briefly again doing a jig at the square dance wearing a derby. He went on in films (this was his debut I believe) to create the 'Broncho Billy' series of western films to follow in the early to mid teens. I believe he was the first cowboy 'star' and set the tone for the successful genre to follow.

The music was composed afterwards, even after 1910 I'd say. The first original soundtrack being composed in 1908.

1903 :The "Old West" was still alive in the more remote areas of Wyoming & Montana. Still living ,Native Americans who fought at the battle of the Little Bighorn & still living veterans of the Civil War. Butch & Sundance had only left for Bolivia 2 yrs earlier. So this is a very special film.

Now: I did not expect to see a dude having his skull bashed in with a stone (piece of coal?) in the first ever Western... It's so cool that we are able to see a movie from 121 years ago nowadays. The wonders of technology. Also: This was shot in 1903... The stuff portrayed in that movie was a reality not too long before then, in fact: Wyatt Earp was still fucking breathing when this movie premiered! Edwin S. Porter was 11 years old when Billy the Kid died and the gunfight at the O.K Corral happened... Mind blowing stuff if you think about it

That's why the original Westerns are the most authentic (up to the 50s and 60s), as the writers, actors, and directors had access to the Wild West in their or their parents' lifetimes. Actors nowadays can't move or talk like people from 100 years ago

Just found your channel and look forward to exploring more. I just did a little extra restoration on this historic film with new music. Music makes all the difference. Films of the pre-soundtrack era always had music of some sort - from one piano to small ensembles to huge orchestras and the mighty WurliTzer theatre organ that could replicate an orchestra. They were never 'Silent'

Jon Savage mentions the film in Teenage : "In a sensational 1912 trial featuring a teenager accused of cold-bloodedly murdering his friend during a botched train robbery, Edwin Porter’s famous film The Great Train Robbery-then showing locally-was cited in a press report as the cause of the outrage: the tragedy was “an Exact Reproduction from Movies”."

I can't believe people saw everything in black and white back then. it's crazy how far we've come as a species. I can't imagine not being able to see in colour.

Obviously this is a Western, & the first influential one, but for some strange reason IMDB don't list it as such, but Action/Adventure. Not disagreeing they cannot be that as well.

on closer inspection this film is not very innovative directorically speaking, undoubtedly more modern than other American films, but cinema in Europe was far ahead. In any case, this film has a fundamental importance in the history of cinema

And you are asking for the colors? Well they are in black and white because at that time they can't produce colors. The first movies are black and white....the colored ones came in later as the technology was develop.

I'm glad to know someone else noticed the poor use of music. It's too "midi" sounding. There are better computer music scoring programs that do a better job. But as far as actual musical composition, that is still based on the particular talent of the person creating the music. There is a fine art to adding music to films. It's a lot more than "filling air."

It was made in 1903 so of course the music will sound awful. Give it a break. It tried for the first Film to tell a story.
@ridetrackx
@ridetrackx Жыл бұрын
@@tyty334351 apologies if you were joking, but it's not the original music, and it doesn't work well with the film. as far as music sounding bad because of 1903, we have classical master pieces of music composed 200 years before this film. age make no difference, knowing when and how to use music makes the difference.
