Jim MacDonald was the Ulsterman, so he was. I think the violence meted out to Driver Jack Mills was gratuitous and uncalled for. It's amazing how technically simple creating the false red signal was. A glove and a couple of batteries. How long did it take to figure out? Could some form of alarm or indicator have been devised to prevent future repetition? The technology existed even at the time; some boxes had repeaters which showed the actual position of semaphore signals, for example. Although the cost of so fitting every home signal would have been astronomical. I believe that a commercial decision would have been made to have regarded the method as an unlikely to be repeated one off
