Korra was severely mentally and physically broken at the end of Volume 3. She was poisoned, she shattered her legs and she was almost suffocated. Every volume so far destroyed her mind bit by bit, first she was blocked from bending, contemplating suicide because she knew the world needs an Avatar who can bend all elements, then her Avatar spirit was ripped right out of her, making her temporarily the last Avatar before the cycle ends. Korra didn't win the last battle, without Jinora's intervention she would've died and the Avatar along with it, Korra failed in her own eyes, even when she was celebrated as the hero.

Exactly. I LOVED how Pudgey managed to pick up on some of these mental aspects of Korra in this ep - despite barely seeing Korra for the episode. She's so empathetic. Trauma messes people up and 3 years is not nearly enough for some people to get past it. Throw in the fact that she was paralyzed and had to learn to walk and fight all over again and it's not hard to see why Korra is losing so much.
@pabloc8808
@pabloc8808 Жыл бұрын
@@wendellaraujo7203 The didn't win, that's the symbolism behind the chain: Zaheer could fly because he believed he no longer had earthly attachments (his love for P'Li) but he was wrong. He still had his pride, which compelled him to try and destroy the Avatar Cycle. Korra was his true last earthly tether, and in the end she was the one who pulled him down. Zaheer lost because of himself more than because of Korra

One thing I don't understand in LOK is how they wrote the world as not needing an avatar, there was peace, so the stakes were at an all time low. Then at the same time they made an avatar that thought the world needed her so badly, that if she lost any power she felt like worthless scum? Am I missing something here? Where's the stakes to warrant such behavior?

For me, Korra's book 4 is the epitome of animated series storytelling. We were so used to just see the great finale of the amazing wars and fights and how our protagonists became victorious, but NEVER told us the aftermath. We always assumed the end was the beginning of that "happy ever after", but never showed us the emotional consequences of those life-risking events. The trauma. The emotional struggles. Can't wait to see your journey through book 4 🧡

It’s hard to understand physical and mental trauma if you’ve never experienced it yourself. But, if she had fully recovered, then she wouldn’t be struggling. I had an issue that was affecting my pancreas, for instance, and it left my body severely weakened. It gradually got better, over some months. But at first, I couldn’t even walk around the hospital without becoming exhausted. After I left, my sister helped me get groceries and I had to sit down. Went back to work, and my work is not at all physically demanding, and I still felt like it was too much and was leaving early every day. I knew someone who had a similar issue but much more severe and permanent, and it kept them down for years. So, just because Korra looks like she’s in fighting form, it doesn’t mean she is

There are simple emotional problems in life, and there are complex ones. A person's capacity for empathy and their ability to parse through someone else's psychology is really tested in instances like book 4. Avatar is a series that usually presents a lot of simple emotional conflicts. Heavy, but simple enough to resolve in the space of one or two episodes. Only characters like Zuko or Korra rare granted arcs that really span over four episodes, indicated further by their relapses and failures. The series' typical fast-pacing is pushed aside for these character arcs, so that when you think a problem is supposed to be resolved, it really isn't. And it's these long arcs that can often annoy some folks, but it's the long ones that really hit home with for those who've felt long hardships of their own.

I think people forget that everything that occurred between books 1-3 occurs in like 7 months, that is alot for anyone to go through even the Avatar. Aang went through alot in his half a year but Korra dealt with a lot of identity shattering moments after growing up confident and assured of it.

Ditto to this. I think Pudgey will definitely be able to appreciate the nuances of the journey + development, but it might be harder for Spartan to enjoy the season because I know how much he appreciates confidence, bravado, big epic fight sequences, etc. Hopefully the journey they've been on with Korra (and other shows+movies) will help in him seeing that not all battles are physical; that the hardest ones are sometimes mental (regardless of how strong you have or could be physically).

Korra did breakdown because at first she thought the world it’s ready to greet their new avatar, and until the end of book 3 every villain said the same thing; we don’t need the avatar anymore. That broke her the most. Also, Tenzin and the Air Nations (despite their good deed to help the world) just adding salt to the wound because at the same time he said “we’ll do the job for you” which translates the same thing by the villains for Korra.

spartan not getting korra’s mental state is a bit irritating but what i expected. but i think the way he’s talking about it as how to him it’s obvious that she’s done such a good job is still very interesting to see. it really feels like he’s playing the part of everyone else in the avatarverse, looking at her accomplishments and going Wow, and it just makes it clearer the depression that she’s facing right now. where they can look at the same facts and she can see it as a failure, while to spartan it’s clearly a success, just feels very realistic in terms of the way mental illness skews your own perceptions

You know the set up is great. Kuvira can work both as a villan or a plot twist protagonists I lover her the scene with stubborn governor. He gets all hight and mighty and says i heard you are a bad person and Kuvira simply steps forward and he has no choise but to sit back down. He looks like a toddler throwing a tantrum. He is trying to be a grown up in front of the woman who did all the hard work fixing the nation. And she is not taking his s-t. The people are starving have staying in power for a few days while she goes and fixes more problems. This to me is abetter introduction to Kuvira than the fight scene. Do you remember Long Fang head of the Di lee in the old show. He wasn’t a threat as a bender he was a threat as a politician. And that was much scarier. Having an antagonist who is a good politician and a good war general would be killer! Also yes the voice acting is fenomenal.
@pabloc8808
@pabloc8808 Жыл бұрын
Kuvira works because like all the antagonists in LOK, she represents a political ideology, but imo she's the only one who represents it well. Kuvira represents fascism, and fascism at first is always enticing and tempting, because it proposes law, order and stability, through force if necessary. Then you realize it's not really "if necessary", it's always through force. And THEN you ask the more important question: whose "order and stability"? For whom? It takes away people's right to choose. Besides, because it is authoritarian, there's nothing to guarantee it won't overstep. Kuvira said all she wanted was for her nation to be strong and stable, and wouldn't mess with the other nations, but can you really take her word for it? Because, funny enough, there was a guy with a mustache who said something similar in Germany back in the early 20th century.

It actually really frustrated me how much the writers stressed that her self-worth hinged on being avatar (Avatar learning to be a girl). Why would it? They gave no reason. In fact, the backstory they gave her suggests the opposite. A sheltered girl who lived a normal childhood. Why would a girl like that even be thinking about Avatar duties? She wouldn't. She didn't even have a taste of what it is to be avatar and had never done avatar duties or been in avatar state. Also season 1 had very little to do with power, the avatar's status as a celebrity was the only thing that mattered, and she became a scapegoat for political schemes. If anything, she should've been crying about how dumb she is, getting outsmarted over and over and falling into every trap (sorry but it's true). Instead the writers force you to watch a crybaby crybabying about being slightly less O.P. physically :\.

Kuvira is fascinating as a character because she brings a fight still fought today. Right to self governance vs keeping general order. The right to self govern is evident when acknowledging the individual but when put in social groups we tend to obey the law of the jungle. The strong thrive while the weak either submit or get crushed. On the other side of the arguement is organized government restricting people's freedom in return for stability and enforcement of public welfare.

20:30 oof "the wheelchair part isn't enough for me" even in context, not a great thing to say, man. And with everything you said after... The attitude is very dismissive.... You yourself said here "she's been through similar things before" like.... yeah, Books 1-3 take place over about a year, she went through these worldshattering events back-to-back-to-back and hasn't been able to sit and process any of it because the blows keep coming... and then place yourself in the mindset of someone who's been aware of their "destiny" to be the world's savior since they were 4 on top of that. Don't think you're a bad person for any of this, btw, just saying - dig a bit deeper. This book especially is very existential, and understanding Korra's motivations & fears, and the suffering she went through is very important to get the full picture of her growth. And never forget: recovery is a non-linear process. People go through setbacks, regressions, self-sabotage, etc. all the time. Korra's journey through this season is very aware of this and offers one of the most honest, well written portayals of PTSD in any media I've ever come in contact with. I can admit Book 3 is a more entertaining watch, but Book 4's depth is what makes it my favorite Book of both shows.

The thing this episode doesn't do a good job of is explaining the Kuvira situation. She is working under the remit of the Earth Kingdom crown, with the support of the united nations and all other nations to reunite the breakaway Earth Kingdom territories that decided to be opportunistic during the chaos of season 3 with the destruction of the Earth Kingdom government to declare independence. This governor is a failure and stuck in his pride. The episode tries to portray him as noble and protecting his people but the truth is that state specialises in raw material production (ore). The governor is unable to feed his people without outside help, nor is he militarily strong enough to defend his land from banditry. He has created a failed state reliant on external charity. To deny the return of the Kingdom in the name of his people's independence is nothing more than an ego trip and certainly not in the best interest of the people.

Look I get the reaction to Kuvira’s actions, but, consider this: *(Will Contain Minor Spoilers for the End of LoK* The Earth Kingdom Monarchy as it stood before its fall in season 3 was a borderline failing state. This was due to the immense power the nobility in the Earth Kingdom amassed. The Earth States (those seperate territories on Kuvira’s map) are essentially semi-independent entities that are basically under the purview of the Earth Monarch in Ba Sing Se. But in practice are mostly run themselves. This means a massive issue of lack of accountability and a universal set of rules. One governor may be benevolent and care about their people. But with born nobility, how often is that the case? Now, the system is teetering on the edge as it is. But in season 3, the Earth Queen was assassinated, the walls of Ba Sing Se breached, and the revolutionaries declared the monarchy over. Think of the impact that that would have throughout the entire Earth Kingdom. Like maybe try to imagine what would happen if the entire federal leadership of the United States were to all be killed at the same time. For some batshit reason. How would the states respond? It would be mass chaos, quite frankly. Without a cohesive force keeping everything together, every leader of their state would be able to react in their own way to the crisis. At least in the modern day US there are still checks and balances on the state and local level to prevent a full devolution of society. But in the Earth States, run by nobility? The complete opposite. Now suddenly, you have dozens of sates that have basically just been told “you have no one to answer to anymore. You can do whatever you want.” There is now no structure of “Earth Kingdom” at all in practicality. There is no power check on any governor and their actions. They could attack other states, oppress their citizens. Or, as probably would happen, many would be overthrown in mass riots and probably die causing power vacuums everywhere. The point is that in the weeks and months following the assassination, the entire continent basically implodes. Now there is no central government, every state is chaotically run by whatever leader happens to be there, and the citizens are now either probably starving due to a shut down of travel between states (some states would be food providers, other providing other types of goods.) the leaders would be encouraged to crack down to prevent further chaos, making the issue worse. This is the state of the country that is happening when Kuvira first gets the drive to do something. Note, Kuvira is an abandoned orphan, taken in by Su. And it affected her life in a big way. Can you imagine how she would feel then, being in Zaofu, safe and fed. Warm. Comfortable. With rich, privileged Suyin, watching the entire country basically burn down around them. Kuvira implores Su to use her immense power and resources (she’s literally from the richest family in the Earth Kingdom and probably more so after building a productive city like Zaofu). But Su *refuses.* How would you feel? The entire continent is literally burning down and people are dying and suffering everywhere, yet one of the best possible people who could help decides to sit on her arse and do *nothing* The avatar is unavailable to help. It truly seems like no one will step forward and help. (Except Tenzin, bless him. But there’s only so many a group of children and teenagers can do here.) Is it any wonder that Kuvira decided. “Well, if no one else is gonna stand up and help, I’ll do it.” And she takes those who volunteer, and she goes and *does it* Like think how crazy that is. She’s a head guard of a city in the Earth Kingdom. And she takes her guards and *stabilises the capital city of Ba Sing Se* Now imagine how the people reacted to this. Su insists they’d be seen as conquerors and met with war. But based on the reverence Kuvira is granted by her men and people. And the loyalty they possess, I believe the opposite occurred. They were suffering, dying, starving, riots and looters all over. Basically an anarchist hell. Then here comes this woman. Fighting side by side with her men, and she gives you peace and stability. Not only that, she’s not some high rich noble. She’s an orphan from no high birth. She’s just a person like you. Yet she has chosen to take your plight on her shoulders to save you and others. It’s very, very easy to imagine how this would inspire an almost worshipful loyalty among the people to Kuvira. Especially those of the lower classes. They’d see her as a literal saviour. Now, imagine Kuvira is now decided. “Well, I stabilised the capital. The people are happy. They are thanking me. Obviously I need to help the others in this situation.” So she decides to go on to stabilise the Earth States and reunify the Earth Kingdom. At this point, all she cares about is ending the suffering and chaos that is hurting her people. She is still basically loyal to the idea of an Earth Kingdom. However, given the circumstances for the Earth States I outlined. What would Kuvira have encountered? Corrupt, greedy, oppressive tyrants. Crushing the lower masses under their boot to enrich themselves. Governors or whatever despotic leader who’s in charge is probably feeling like it’s the best time of their life. They can do whatever they want and there’s no Earth Queen to say otherwise. Now comes along Kuvira. At the head of a grand mostly lower class army. Seeking to re-establish the old order and set everything right. End the suffering and oppression of the people. How do you imagine the leaders would have responded to her? Most probably. Violently. But of course Kuvira is justified fighting a despotic oppressive leader to save the people they’re oppressing right? Obviously. So she wins, and she gets this tyrant off their little throne. But now what? There’s no leader. You can’t shove this noble back on the seat cuz he caused the problems to start with. So what do you do? It’s easy to see that Kuvira would have no choice but to replace the leader with another one to try to establish stability in the region. Probably one loyal to her, or at least one that agrees with her vision and goals. Probably leaves some of her troops behind so there can be stability and no more oppression and chaos. So same thing happens with the people. A saviour just came and saved us, saved our families. Gave us food, medicine, repaired our homes and streets. Defeated the one oppressing us. So she gets even more reverence and acclaim. People are joining her left and right, swearing to follow her wherever she may lead. They truly, wholeheartedly, believe in her. If she told them to put a gun to their head and said it was for the good of their people they’d do it without hesitation. So the cycle repeats. She goes from state to state, sorting out whatever messes and problem are occurring. Not only that, but she’s using her newly acquired power and resources to improve the infrastructure of the entire kingdom. She’s introducing new technology, travel, energy, and so on. She’s a one woman nation building machine. And she sees what effect it’s having on people. She sees them grateful. Thanking her for saving them. But she knows, as she accepts their praises and thanks. That she’s doing all this. All this work, sacrifice. Just to restore some random teenager on the throne. a teenager that hasn’t even set foot in his own country since the beginning of this crisis. Is it any wonder that Kuvira loses faith in the idea of having a nobility at all? That having an Earth Monarch itself is at the root of why all this spiralled out of control to begin with? But what can she do? She knows that if she steps back and this useless young king takes over, so, so much of what she’s accomplished for her people will be undone. The old nobles will be reestablished. How can the King claim his seat by right if he refuses to do the same to other nobles? So the leaders that caused this whole mess to begin with will get back in charge Scot free. Now with an elite experienced army that Kuvira has built. All with the added technology and improvements Kuvira has made. It’s completely understandable in these circumstances that Kuvira would feel she has no choice if she wants to actually keep her people safe that she has to create a new system of government altogether. And her people *will not* accept any other leader than her. She is their saviour. Their Great Uniter. She came when no one else would and fought for them. They’d follow her anywhere. So she realises that she has to step into a leadership role. She has to take the reigns. She can truly establish a state that protects and serves the masses and not just the lucky few at the top. This Kuvira would be a noble, heroic character. Who has risen up from a simple soldier into an icon of a saviour and leader. She would care deeply about all her people, and she would want to do everything she could to protect them. It’s for this reason that I think the story writers messed up her character. They knew that they wanted her to be the villain but clearly made her story too heroic. So they had to shove in all these scenes of her being all Hitler like and evil. It’s very forced. She’s basically a revolutionary socialist, if you think about it. A low class woman who fought on behalf of the lower masses against their oppressors. (Except against a monarchist regime instead of capitalism.)
