Corky and Lolita have been in captivity for over half a century. Lolita is from the Puget Sound Southern Resident orca population, which was decimated by captures in the sixties and seventies. They are now listed as critically endangered. Her mother, Ocean Sun, is estimated to be between eighty and ninety years old. They will probably never be reunited. Corky is a Northern Resident and member of the A-23 pod. Her sister, brother, niece and grand-nephews can still be seen roaming the coastal waters of British Columbia. What different lives they must lead.

This always breaks my heart, and knowing that this happened with all of her babies is just horrible... Corky has been such a good mother and babysitter to the calves she later met in seaworld. She is so protective of them. She is so sweet and friendly that she is usually the first orca to meet a new tankmate sent to the park. Such a beautiful whale.

Aside from having to live in a Dixie Cup due to human ignorance some of the problems might have been because Orky and Corky were too closely related with both being A pod Northern Residents. Something might have been wrong with Orky's genes, Orkid has never had calves and Kayla rejected her only calf Hayln who didn't live long.

I remember some other footage that showed the calf sort of having a “seizure” that made it readily apparent that the baby would not survive. I have to say that I’ve watched baby orca born, and it’s so sweet when the calf takes it first few breaths, the dorsal fin is floppy, and the head comes up out of the water and splashes right back down. 🐋❤️

She sort of did but it's also a sad story. Another Orca named Kandu 5 whom she lived with had a calf named Orkid. After having lost 7 calves, Corky repeatedly showed interest in Orkid which irritated Kandu 5. The tension came to a head in 1989 when during a show, Kandu 5 rammed Corky so hard, she broke her jaw and severed an artery and after 45 minutes, she bled to death. After she died, Corky "adopted" Orkid. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mISYm6JtmZl4hKc

@caitlynkelly88596 жыл бұрын
people actually think the reason all Corky's calves died was the shape and size of the tank. it was small and circular. mothers need to drift in relatively straight lines, with gentle turns, so their calf can nurse. Corky couldn't do that. she was taught to nurse by her trainers, but her calves never nursed. trainers managed to feed some of the calves themselves, but Corky quickly got defensive and would try and ram them, or bite them, if they got near her calves.
@littlesongbird16 жыл бұрын
I think both could have played a factor. Remember that she and Orky were both from the same pod and may have been related (hence in breeding issues)
@caitlynkelly88596 жыл бұрын
if I remember correctly, DNA tests where done (After Orky's death) that determined they where not related. but those reports where never confirmed, and I can't find any source that says so, so it could just be a rumour. but Corky and Orky did breed naturally. and I have high doubts they would of done that if they where related. though they may have if they never knew each other in the wild.

Why won’t they nurse? I think After losing so many babies they trained the mother whales to lay on their back upside down when they’re swimming because they can’t swim in a straight line so the baby can nurse. I would have tried to at least give him some sort of bottle to put milk in his mouth. But we’re in the world Would you get well milk? Does anyone know of Corky has had a successful calf? I know like four or five or six died not only is it sad the Corky but to all of her fans in the trainers and owners.
