Lets watch how Jeff Lynne used producer smarts, and some politics, to make an undeniably incredible wall of acoustics with Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and himself

It’s amazing how distinctive the Jeff Lynne sound is. Recently, my father was playing Walk Away by Del Shannon. Not knowing the song, I asked if Jeff Lynne was involved, and as it turns out he was. I think it’s a damn impressive achievement to have a unique enough production sound as to be immediately recognizable as a producer (where it could only be one person), but still let the artists music shine through.

@@harryrenner4016 Have you had a chance to listen to the link I included in my reply to Rand B? If you do, you will see how similar it is to 'You Got It'. The cover of 'Runaway' is an almost exact copy of Del Shannon's original, even down to the tinkly piano and the seemingly primitive recording technique. 'Runaway' has a different tempo and rhythm to 'You Got It'. Nobody seems to be paying any attention to what alex E is saying.

The slightly different voicings between all four guitarists as soon as you start showing 4x guitar pan L is the hidden genius of the whole thing. So much harmonic richness to work with and you're spoiled for choice for tone. Just wow. The end result is so brilliant.

I often record two identical parts and pan them hard left and right, then two more panned half left and right, but sixteen acoustics, that's wonderful! Incidentally, I've found that very very slight differences in tuning give things a kind of shimmer rather than sounding off.

Great video...I am a big ELO fan....and don't forget the Jeff's production work on Time and Secret messages albums .(.different from what was recorded from 1979 to 1980) In the 1983 album there are lots of acoustic and electric guitars layers,vocal harmonies,little details coming from everywhere on the left and right side of the stereo spectrum...it's an enjoyment from start to finish...with small details that catch your attention from one song to the next I recommend listening to the final version of the album, as it was going to be released on a double disc and is now available on KZbin. Secret messages it is not a favourite album for so-called experts in music criticism but as for musical production it is pure gold! And in my opinion one of the greatest ELO albums...maybe not the most famous but it's a great album I have listened this album to death since I was a teenager and I never get bored of it! " Time " is another gem if you love jeff's production skills. Congratulations on your channel greetings from Chile

One similar trick I like to use (sparingly!) is having a "Nashville" tuned guitar doing the double. It can really help the track hold it's own in the mix without being "loud". It can sometimes even lead you down some unexpected paths where you can hard pan the Nashville and normal hard to opposite sides. Not something you'd want to do every time, but as a one off in the right situations, it can be great.

My favorite recording are usually when it’s one guitar and maybe not even doubled but if it’s a good player with a great instrument you capture a wonderful character and expression that gets lost with heavy layering. His vocal harmony stacking, embellishments to rhythm, and doubling guitars with varied overdrive/distortion is interesting too. @@BobbyHuff actually what I focused on is how up front the drums are blended with the wall of sweet acoustics, more knowledge in the bank, thanks BH!

Great great video. Officially this technique was first used by George Harrison on his first solo album… maybe Jeff Lynne was there. But just saying… it’s a George thing :)

Great video although this is a Roy Orbison’s song (You Got It) from his final album. Harrison and Dylan didn’t play on this song. Anyway, great video!

Correct!! ..We were just playing the technique to demonstrate it and no song in particular. This technique works great for any song that this sound is desirable.

So how many acoustic guitar tracks are on each song? 8?
@BobbyHuff3 жыл бұрын
16. 8 of the 6 string and 8 of the 6 string capo’d to sound like a 12.

There is actually footage of them laying down the guitar parts for this song in a Tom Petty documentary. I think there was actually about 6 guitarists around 1 microphone (at least that I could see), at least 1 was playing a 12-string. George Harrison had used a similar technique previously with the band Badfinger all strumming along on acoustic guitars at the Concert For Bangladesh.

Thanks Neon! There was a quick shot in my video of them playing together. What a band!!
