I've been a pro photographer for nearly 20 years. In that time I've owned the original Digital Rebel, Canon 20D, 30D, 1D Mark IIn, 1D Mark III (this was my bread and butter workhorse cam for 12 years), the 5D IV and the EOS R. Out of all the cameras I've ever owned or tried, the 5D IV had the best image quality. I could push and pull those files - even at very high ISOs - and they never let me down. It was INCREDIBLE! The EOS R was a bit more fun and had better autofocus, but the file quality was not as good as from the 5D IV despite the fact that people said they had the same sensors. I suspect something to do with the autofocus being on the sensor caused noise and processing issues. The EOS R when pulled had much more noise than the 5D IV, the colour fell apart quicker, and there was very ugly "banding" or pattern noise that the 5D IV did not have at all. I know Tony Northrup showed this too when the R came out (I tried a few R's and they all had this issue). I eventually sold all my gear last year as I lost all jobs due to the pandemic and I really miss the 5D IV. I believe the R5 is now a great successor to the 5D with amazing IQ and all the bells and whistles but it's $5500 here in Canada and the RF lenses are just so bloody expensive now (2 - 3x more than they used to be in the EF lineup). I have my fondest memories of the 1D III as it was just so well built and reliable, but when it comes to image quality, the 5D IV game me everything I ever wanted and more. I also think 30 MP was the sweet spot for resolution.

I should also add that the 5D IV was the first Canon camera to make a big jump in dynamic range to essentially be on par with Sony and Nikon. At no point did I wish I had more dynamic range. It wasn't until the R5 came out that Canon improved on this (as the EOS R was a slight step worse than the 5D IV).

I passed on the R5 and R5c, they either have temp issues or battery issues. A camera that shuts off functions at quarter battery is not for me, especially when you only get just under an hour video time. I live on Australia, to hot for an R5.

I have recently purchased the 5D iv and I love the look and feel of the images that come from it and it just works. It is awesome!

Congrats! It’s one of those cameras that just has a little bit of magic to it.

Wonderful review and right on point. The 1080p out of this camera is amazing. I like the primes EF 40mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8. Along with the EF 24-105mm f/4 (L).

Appreciate that! I started my whole career with the original 5d and a 50mm 1.4 that I still have to this day. EF glass is great value for the $ right now.

Almost a sad story letting that camera go? I’m sure it will find a nice home!..

I keep all my original boxes too! I'm thinking of buying this or an R5.

Hmm, yep this camera was a icon and for a hobbist secondhand buy is a great tool. But I can't go back. Yes colours are important but i have an R3 and this is a lot of camera. So much quicker, faster to use. Yes i am not wrapped in the colours out of this camera, but have cured this with personal LUTs, otherwise it is a absolute dream to use and operate. Sorry can't go back 🤔

There is very little if anything that would beat an R3 so I totally agree with you. Happy shooting!

Sadly, the R3, and all the new Canon full frame mirrorless cams are just unbelievably expensive. The R6 is almost $4000 here in Canada. I think I paid much less than that for my 5D IV when it was new and it had 50% more megapixels. The R6 would be a great cam if it was 30 MP as to me that is the sweet spot.

@@77dris when you look at photography gear in general, I don't think they are that expensive. I have a cycling channel. If you think cameras are expensive, go look at carbon road bike prices. Insane!
