It is sad that MIT professors can't see bigger picture when talking about nuclear weapons. Nuc have, arguably , been the biggest peace keeper in history. How many nuclear nations have been into open war since they posses it? To Nuclear bomb should be given the Nobel peace prize if there were enough wisdom at Nobel committee. Fear of nuclear response is the biggest motivator for humans not to indulge in war. Imagine what would have happened with Ukraine have they not let go of their nuclear weapons to Russia in 90's. Do you think there would be an invasion?

That's is a fresh perspective I heard on nuclear weapons. Posession of nukes create a power shift as well. I.e. India is bigger than Pakistan in terms of economy, population and geography. But the presence of nukes has quite reduced that power difference between two nation.

But these two nations also have millions of people living below poverty line. If only reconciliation and peaceful coexistance was possible, the world would be a much much better place Without spending on nukes

@@uroojarshad5759 Imagine how many times in past decades India and Pakistan would have start war were there not for nucs on both sides. And how many lives were saved because they have nucs. Nuclear weapons saved far more lives in past 70 years then any peace organization.

And here I thought the greatest threat to MIT’s credibility for the past 22 years 4 months and 4 days was visible, as it has been on every cloudy day, from the Museum of Science, where now a livecam takes streaming video across the Charles River on cold and cloudy days, when such days show the reality. I am Norbert’s heir. I’d like to think he would have gotten the obvious right, but sometimes I wonder.

Even if all nuclear weapons were fired on earth it would not be an existential threat

Also, it is likely nuclear weapons will be used by men, not women. Perhaps psychiatric care would help men.

Tell it to Victoria Newland, Hilary Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, or Madeline Albright, the woman who said it was worth the price to starve to death half a million women and children in Iraq. Probably some men too. Neocons come in all shapes.

It assumes that women in power would not use weapons as readily as men. Perhaps those in power are as likely to use nuclear weapons regardless of sex. Thatcher, Catherine the Great, Cleopatra, Indira Gandhi, golda Meier, etc show women are willing to use military force as willingly or even more so than men. Especially when they never served on frontlines to see the horrors of war firsthand. Funny this talker ignores meteors or comets would be far worse. Even a massive coronal ejection would vastly outstrip all nuclear weapons in effect.
