L corrected profiled Light purely on his killing patterns. Based on Light's mistakes (or moves he purposely) L was able to quickly find Light was Kira. Only issue L couldn't prove method of killing. He was dealing with forces beyond Human understanding. If there were records of the death note Light would been arrested very early on

L’s intelligence is so high that he had Light on the ropes several times when dealing with a case that he didn’t have full context for. He didn’t know about Death Notes, Shinigami, the eye trade, etc… and he still succeeded in finding out who the two Kiras were. The main problem comes with the fact that L had a different win condition other than: Find out who Kira is. He also had to find proof that Light is Kira and discover how he kills. Not saying Light had an easy task either, but simply killing L is a much lower bar than finding proof that the supernatural exist. Tbh, L’s loss didn’t come because Light was smarter than him (although Light was shown to rival L quite effectively), but because he had a sacrificial free win button with Rem.

L had to solve a case involving literal magic and he STILL figured out Light was basically the culprit, but just didn't have the physical proof to get him. The quality of the victims and the severity of their crimes is much lesser than what Kira was usually doing at the time, the chip scene happened along side a weird pattern for Kira. Honestly, I see the argument and kind of have to agree. When it comes to the human world, Light v L is all the rage but Ryuk indeed should be in the discussion for smartest Death Note character. He fools the Shinigami King, puts the events in motion by dropping the Death Note, only actively helps Light when it suits him, witnesses the chaos he put into motion for literal years, and is ultimately the one that takes out Light when Kira loses the game against Near (complacency is a dangerous thing, Light). And even in the Death Note sequel one shot, the Shinigami King isn’t even shown to be mad, he kind of wants to watch more human abuse the power of the Death Note, so Ryuk probably entertained the Shinigami realm more than anyone. He legit should be in the conversation for smartest Death Note character in his own right.

I do think that L, Kira and Near were about equals in intelligence but with different strengths and weaknesses. L was the most experienced and well rounded detective, Light was great at manipulation, and quick on his feet (thinking wise) and Near had , maybe the best analytical thinking, comparable or even slightly better than L's

Well, the "death of the author" would state that it doesn't matter what Ohba said outside of the story, only the story itself matters. Inteligence is almost impossible (or impossible) to measure, and you could say it's subjective, so to argue who is the smartest is already problematic. You definetively can say it's L, but there's an equally strong argument for Light, and even Mello and Near could be included in this discussion. So in conclusion... people still debate this topic because it is very much up for debate.

To be fair, that's mostly because the anime adaptation buthered part 2. Iwon't go into detail and there are KZbin videos that do but basically the reason why part 2 in the anime sucked is because part 2 in the manga is around as long as part 1 and the anime condensed it into 11 episodes. Imagine if part 1 was 11 episodes instead of 25, that's what the anime did with part 2 I recommend reading the manga for a much much better version of part 2

The difference between 130 and 115 isn't that, the guy with 130 is twice as smart as the guy with 115, it is more of an arbitrary jump, usualy (logarithmic jump) in understading, that happens to follow a normal distribution. The difference is visibly , quantitatively, qualitatively, neuro physiologically, amorphously, dis-proportionately in favour to the 130. It could be like 10times greater logarithmically speaking. It is the difference between being a casually smart individual and being an outcast. It is the difference between struggling with A (level) Mathematics vs Learning (A level) Mathematics in 4weeks with full comprehension. The former to catch up with the gifted would need to work very very hard. So, it is the same with mello and near, of which both were within Lights range near being 165 mello 145 and Light Being 175, while as L is at 190 which is crazy High.

L was always trying to find, not only the identity of Kira, but physical proof of how he kills to present before a judge. Even if L would have “won” without Miss and Rem (the Shinigami of the pair effectively acting as a sacrificial free win button for Light, granted with some manipulation involved), would he have been able to discover the Death Note and build enough of a case to convict Light? Idk. L seemed unwilling to accept the supernatural until Misa used the word Shinigami in her note during the Sakura TV arc.
