Gliders were part of the movie Savung Private Ryan. If you remember when they are going through the dog tags there is part of that scene when they talk about adding plates of armor to gliders and not telling the pilots. Causing the glider to nose dive.

You should look up the operation entitled Pegasus bridge. It was a part of world War two, in the invasion of Normandy, where British paratroopers and glider infantry landed to try and take some bridges behind enemy lines. Using glider planes. You might even say that this is the first part of operation overlord.

If you want to learn more about the gliders from ww2, and you don't mind traveling, there is a museum in Lubbock Texas named The Silent Wings. I went there last year and had a good time checking out the museum, and Lubbock was also pretty nice.

While MacArthur did have extreme authority, he didn't have authority over the Navy/Marine Corps. Nimitz was the top dog there and him and MacArthur actually had a lot of contention over the strategy for the Pacific theater. Nimitz won out, because his island hopping campaign is what was used to get them to Saipan to begin the bombing of Japan. Then Iwo and Oki were invaded to clear the way of the fighter squadrons that were harassing the bombers as they made their way to Japan. MacArthur did have that total authority with the Army/AAAF in the Pacific though.

There's been gliders in old black & white WW2 movies, likely due to real footage spliced in like they used to do. I'd think recreating gliders in a modern movie is due to lack of knowledge as well as being too dangerous to recreate in real life and too expensive with CG. Computer graphics work is insanely expensive. Why do you think a lot of these movies cost so much these days. The more CG used, the higher the cost is. Filming inside a mock glider while doing CG so the viewers can see them detach and land in a short scene wouldn't be worth the cost. Having 1 busted up on the ground in Saving Private Ryan or a few CG ones from far away in Band of Brothers is about all we get.
