I’d also mention that in the title sequence the two people looking down at Bojack when he’s drowning are Mr Peanutbutter, who literally saves him from drowning in his pool in s3 ep10, and Diane, who Bojack wanted to save him from drowning in his pool in s6 ep15. I swear everyone involved in this show are geniuses.

hearing the writers talk in interviews and their sense of humor, i feel like one reason the writers did this was literally as an ironic joke, because since it’s a Netflix show they knew people would skip it and it would be even funnier to make it so detailed. kind of like how they have a meta joke in the show about how you satiate a writer with an end credit page that people will skip anyways, and how they have a joke about Netflix haha

The trippy sequence in season 4 also mimics a kaleidoscope, like the one Diane gave Bojack to keep him distracted while she dealt with her family back in season 1. @@manuam98 I think it's almost certainly foreshadowing that reveal. I also interpret it as a reference to how experimental Season 4 got, though. They really seemed to make it their mission to avoid the formula established by Seasons 1 - 3, focusing more on the supporting characters and mixing up the format by externalising character's mental states (Stupid Piece of Shit, Ruthie, Time's Arrow). Sending BoJack on that trip, rather than having him drift through the Season's settings, reflects that quite well.

I was going to say something similar, that the abuse Bojack received at such a young age probably turned into a deep feeling that he hurt his parents and they were punishing him as a result, where despite his outward understanding that they were in the wrong he'd have some reasonable self-doubt that would absolutely never bubble to the surface given the severity of the abuse and his own development as a result.

Something I liked about the sequence was how Bojack is always moving to the side then backwards. To me it represents that he never grows as a person- he's always stagnant. Him waking up in the morning is the only progress he ever makes, like that in itself is an accomplishment (which it is when you have/are depressed). Then at the end he ALWAYS backpedals- he goes into a bender, is an even worse jerk, and is just generally self destructive. Then afterwards he sits on the surface of his depression but doesn't make much of an effort to get out. He's already resigned himself to his cycle of turmoil. Even in S6 when he tries to change, he still ends up back in the pool, fallen back deeper than ever before.

A small addition taken from the behind the scenes book: They struggled quite a bit with finding fitting music for a show such as Bojack Horseman thats depressing and grounded at times while zany and absurd at other times. The jazzy end product in my opinion is perfect for it, jazz has this magic where it both has a lot of character and can fit a very specific mood and honestly I don't see any other genre or sound fitting the show as well as this title sequence did.
@lovelessmik5127 Жыл бұрын
i think the intro's theme is perfectly fitting, the catchy, even fun beat that it starts off with that slowly transitions into this more somber and serious jazz tune at the end, i think it represents not only bojack's, but everyone else's growth along the show really well

its also worth mentioning that the reason bojack remember all those painful memories in the season 6 title sequence is because he became sober and he remembers everything now that he's not drunk

21:10 in s1e11 “downer ending”, bojack mentions swimming in a lake when he gets too old and drowns. In s2, they mention that something was too dark so he swims out with his friend “suzie side”, an alternate for “suicide” He also almost drowned in the pool in the end. Further, in his eulogy, bojack says about his mother, father and self “we were all in understanding that we were drowning together” Drowning has been a big part of the show and its been used to represent times when bojack was mega stressed (season 1 before he met diane and had that panic attack i think he said he was drowning) They just did an all around good job on this show. I been rewatching it every night but sadly i know too much about it and i been watching it so much in the last year that i dont get much pleasure from watching it. I hope that returns someday though

The season 6 intro is especially fantastic, reminding us of the regrets BoJack accumulated just throughout the course of the previous seasons, not letting us forget what happened in New Mexico, not letting us forget the painful irony of that drug being nicknamed BoJack and so on. Was kind of surprised they didn't update at least the final bit in the pool with his greying mane once Sharona gave him that makeover though. Obviously you wouldn't want that for the flashback parts of the intro, but having it at the end there could have served as an extra reminder of just how many years BoJack's selfish behaviours have been going on for, especially contrasting the younger version of him at the beginning of the season 6 intro.

I have another connection to the bit in the intro sequences where Bojack falls into the pool!! In “Free Churro” (05x06), Bojack is giving his eulogy about Beatrice when at one point, he starts to talks about the lavish parties she threw at their house-where Bojack performed the “Lollipop Song” and Beatrice danced. Then, Bojack illustrates a metaphor about how sometimes, you feel like you are “drowning.” And eventually, swim: Bojack: “We understood each other, in a way. Me and my mom and my dad, as screwed up as we all were, we did understand each other. My mother, she knew what it’s like to feel your entire life like you’re drowning with the exception of [the dance parties]. These very rare, brief instances, in which you suddenly remember... you can swim...But, then again, mostly not. Mostly you’re drowning. She understood that too...All three of us were drowning and we didn’t know how to save each other, but there was an understanding that we were all drowning together” (17:00, “Free Churro”). Edit: this could also be a connection to the painting in Bojack’s office, where a horse is swimming in Bojack’s pool another horse watches. It’s like the members of the Bojack family, as Bojack explained in “Free Churro,” are understanding that they are all drowning. And they are not helping each other, just watching, because they don’t know how to help.

Or how in downer ending he assumes his ending is getting too old to swim back to shore and letting the water take him under.

the photo is from that narcissist story - i think they explained it in the show, i dont remember... where this guy falls in love with his reflection in the water and all he does all day is stare at. he lets his entire life fall apart bc he cant stop staring at himself. bojack is staring at himself. for having low self-esteem he kind of is a narcissist. edit: google says, "Narcissus was a hunter from Thespiae in Boeotia who was known for his beauty. According to Tzetzes, he rejected all romantic advances, eventually falling in love with his own reflection in a pool of water, staring at it for the remainder of his life"

Netflix struck gold with Bojack Horseman. This is the best netflix show OF ALL TIME. And even though Netflix doesn’t really have that many good shows, they struck TV GOLD with this one. It will forever be my favorite piece of Netflix media in history and is why I still have Netflix. From the view of halfway down to Todd telling bojack about his problems this show is about beauty and tragedy of celebrity life. From drugs to riches to the loss of literally everything you have. It is a masterpiece in my eyes.

9:43 I don’t think it’s necessarily people who Bojack has hurt rather than it’s people who he feels he’s hurt. This makes sense because he didn’t really hurt his parents but he is made to feel like he did constantly, with his mother blaming him for her horrible life and his father blaming him for not being able to write.

Yep, totally agree. The music, the locked down perspective, they do a great job of drawing you in to Bojack's isolation no matter how crowded the settings surrounding him get.

Just realised that in the season 6 title sequence when BoJack falls off the observatory balcony, you can actually background kind of blacken out till he falls in the pool. This could actually be a reference to the episode "The View from Halfway Down"
@Delta_Aves3 жыл бұрын
Speaking of the season 6 opening, the fact that it doesn't show Bojack in his home is pretty significant as he spends less time there than in previous seasons. First he was in rehab, and when he was released he actively avoided going to his home, as it was a reminder of his old self. He would eventually move to Connecticut to start a teaching job, and by the end, he becomes broke and has to sell his house. The only time the house appears in the theme, besides the first shot, is the ending with Bojack falling in the pool, considering Bojack eventually fell back into old habits, which coalesced in him almost drowning in his (or what used to be his) pool.

When I was watching Bojack with my family last year one of our favorite things about it was how good the continuity was between episodes. Whenever we saw a small detail in one episode that was the result of a decision made in a previous one, we would say “continuity!” and point it out, like a little game. The details in the intro sequence perfectly display the amount of attention to detail this show had, and when something like that happens you can really tell the writers and animators loved the show they were making.
@distorityedan30813 жыл бұрын
I just can't stop wondering about how much effort must have taken from the crew for this to be possible. It must've been constantly taking notes of every detail that would or could be showed physically, then writing/designing how that would look on the sequence, then actually drawing and animating it. So much teamwork, so much commitment. And Yet apparently It is too hard for people at my job to properly communicate basic directions or notifications that others should know to do their work

I love how in the intro, most of the characters are not looking at Bojack and are going about their lives. Shows that Bojack feels alone and detached from those around him. You do see people looking at him annoyed or angry from time to time (I think at one point Mr Peanutbutter looks at him too and Bojack looks annoyed at him) but for the most part, he feels "other". He misses the good parts of his life because he is so focused on the bad. Of course that changes when he does something drastic, like almost drown in a pool. Only then do Diane and Mr Peanutbutter look concerned for him. Maybe he feels like he has to keep doing things to himself/his life for attention, even bad attention? Because he feels unseen? I love analyzing it sm!!

Another change in s6’s intro is where in the usual intro sequence is Mr. Peanutbutter’s expression by the pool looking down at bojack, He seemed pretty energetic and happy seasons prior but right when he and diane got divorced his expression changed to him just staring blankly at bojack. This showed how even though they divorced and he had met pickles, he still loved diane, His expression was switched back to his usual positive self when he finally moves on from diane and finally loved pickles.

What I find absolutely phenomenal with the season 6 opener is bojacks expression Like from season 1-5 he just had like a zoned out face as he was just cruising through life and was too drunk or high to really gauge what he was doing and what was happening But from season 6 where he goes sober, he’s actually able to comprehend his actions and remember his past, and the fact he has any expression now and the very subtle facial changes he makes are so telling of his character shift
@yagirl21242 жыл бұрын
21:45 in the season 6 version of the theme song when bojack is falling into the pool, the last thing you also see very blatantly are his eyes. his face fades into the darkness, but his glaring, white eyes are still extremely bright and staring right at the audience until the last second when he falls in. everything in animation is intentional, and it’s VERY CLEAR how much attention to detail is put into this theme song- so i feel like his eyes glaring at us were a reference to the free churro ep- “i see you”, considering the fact that those were his mother’s last words to him right before she died, and bojack is staring at the audience right before he falls into the pool (and also nearly died due to attempted suicide).

god i love this show....like it has so many important and rare lessons in it, like obviously everything that comes with bojack as a character and how he makes the audience feel, but like i realized why i found herb's response to bojack's apology so moving, and it's because bojack is one of the only pieces of media i've ever seen that tells its audience that it's okay to not forgive someone. like every other show is like "u have to forgive your abuser to move on!!!" or whatever but when herb says "i'm dying. i'm not gonna feel better, and i'm not gonna be your prop so you can feel better" like......damn

I distinctly remember that back in the day, everyone was talking about how cool it was that after the bed's leg broke, it stays broke in the intro and when it's fixed, it's fixed in the intro too. Good times.

And that's without taking the song into account! That song is genius from a musician craftmanship point of view. In the same words you used with the rest of the title, not only beacuse it's incredibly cool sounding, but beacuse its meaningful. It really helps capture the essence of BoJack and still blows my mind every time.

Another note on bojack falling into his pool and drowning being a major theme with bojack's life. In downer ending, while writing his own book on his bender he wants to drown in the lake in harpers landing. even almost dying in it with eddie in The Old Sugarmen's Place.

It's worth noting at 20:22 that unlike the other openings when he does the fall, in the last opening, he is not drunk. This is significant considering that this is also the season when he commits suicide, which puts a whole new meaning to that jump.

All of the BoJack-Philbert blurring details are definitely my favourite. I didn’t even notice these changes on my first watch through because they did them one by one. Such a brilliant way to show how BoJack is slowly losing his grip on reality over the course of the season.

2 details of the final intro you missed: Firstly whenever there is a normal transition or with an object, it means that not much time has passed, but when there is a fade, it means a lot of time has passed between the events, also Mr Peanutbutter for some reason has a different, more worried expresion when looking down at bojack in the pool, which is present only in season 6 and before Diane's design changes

The attention to detail and background aesthetic is what I love most. Those background details don't just change by season, sometimes by episode. A season would have 3 intros sometimes. Then the culmination of all of that qas season 6, it was a recap of all Bojack's life.
@leo_13043 жыл бұрын
In season's 1-5 Bojack seems a little surprised when he falls into the pool, implying that he doesn't want to be falling into the pool, but in season 6 when he falls off the cliff his face is completely void of emotion and he wears a blank expression. This could possibly show how now that he can reflect on all the bad he's done he figures there is some sort of karma that he has coming and he isn't surprised when it comes. He excepts it. So he shows no surprise or emotion.
