The Greatest Waterfall Hike in California

What makes this the greatest waterfall hike in California? Well, the Seven Falls Trail of Santa Barbara has it ALL. From the very start, this popular Santa Barbara hike meanders along gorgeous forest trails and streams until hikers reach the first major waterfall. From there, it's a choose your own adventure. Bold and adventurous hikers can continue on up the 7 falls, a route that requires swimming, scrambling, climbing, some rope work, and awesome hidden waterfalls! After you're done exploring the 7 falls, there's another option to continue up the trail to find the hidden pools, which are another absolutely spectacular water feature. Which pool would you jump in?
Part of the reason this Santa Barbara hike is so incredible is because hikers of almost all skill levels can find something to enjoy here. If scrambling is not your thing, spend some time relaxing by the first major waterfall. Totally agree. There is nothing more pleasurable than a sweaty, challenging hike where the "summit" is an epic waterfall with no one around. Yes this one is definitely worth a trip, and if you have a few days you can climb up to Tangerine Falls another day, which is also pretty awesome. Santa Barbara is an awesome under the radar hiking destination! ❤️

One caveat -- there might not be as much water in the falls if you go later in the summer. Right now they are glorious, but they will get much lower as the non-rainy season progresses. ❤️

I love the clarity of your videos! Like looking thru a window. Beautiful area. On a hike out from Picacho del Diablo, we stopped at a small pool to swim. In my bare feet I slipped on the mossy rocks and fell on my side badly bruising my ribs. I was sore as hell till we went to San Felipe that night and had "Mas Tequila." Then I didn't feel anything until the next morning. 😄

I love waterfall hunting. I tried four times to find a rumored waterfall in the mountains near my house, but the first two times, I couldnt find it. 3rd time found it, but it was dry. 4th time, it was roaring, but someone removed the ropes to get there. Still fun though

Yes! Love your persistence in the waterfall hunt. That is exactly the kind of thing we love to do too. Sometimes Adam will just go on Google Earth and try to find us waterfalls where there isn't even any kind of trail to them. It's such an amazing feeling when you arrive at a magical place with no one else around -- and the harder it is to get to the more likely that is to happen!! ❤️

I was looking forward to this one and y'all did not disappoint. It has been years since I did this hike and it is in my backyard. Once I tried scaling the wall on the left side of the falls in pool 3 trying to stay dry and lost footing scrapping my knees on the way down into the water, oh well it was well worth it. Seven falls is a special place to us here in SB and it's good to see someone has outfitted some places with rope which wasn't there the last time I did this hike... You lucked out with having the place all to yourselves that day, so Awesome. Now you inspired me to head up there for a revisit before the creek dries up and mosquitos take over👍.

Love the coast. My favorite Cascades are on Kern River up road to Sherman Pass. Kernville side. Also has the twin falls on hwy. Both are easier to walk to than this but it is remote area. Got 100 giants to. It's about the drive. Keene to Kernville Caliente Road? I fell slipped 2 feet today. Wrenched back. 😢 first thought was Elise back. Dogs sitting there. Me looking quarter mile down mountain. Laughed and omg the pain. Laughed harder unbelievable. The trip down was hell. Yep.

Thanks Mary! The Santa Ynez mountains are a bit too low for snowmelt, so this is just groundwater from rainfall coming down from higher up the mountains. That's one reason waterfall season doesn't last for too long around here -- once the water dries up for the year, there's no melting snow to keep it coming so you have to wait until after the next rainy season! ❤️

That's a great question. We've actually considered using a drone for recon before, especially on off-trail hikes where we don't have beta or aren't quite for some other reason aren't quite sure about the route. But remember they're illegal in any national park, so there's a limit to where they can be used. ❤️

We were just discussing it with some friends at dinner yesterday! It's not for us, because we do so much long distance stuff that we really need to eat a lot of carbs. And also, we both like vegetables a lot. But carnivore/keto type diets can be very effective for getting ripped. It's just that it puts you into a low-glycogen state so it makes it hard to do hard long distance cardio. ❤️

Haha it's ok Joe -- truth be told there's no way I would have climbed some of the parts that Adam did even on a bet (unless it was a really big bet 😂). He makes it look really easy, and it probably is for him because he practices so much in the climbing gym and has become a really good climber, but there were a couple of sections where I might have slipped and cheese-gratered myself on the way down. So I am definitely okay with him doing those parts solo! ❤️ --E
