Even in that year's group I agree he should have won. Michael Caine won for Cider House Rules. He was also up against Haley Joel Osment for The Sixth Sense, Tom Cruise for Magnolia & Jude Law for The Talented Mr. Ripley. I remember watching feeling like Duncan was so ripped off. We know he should've most definitely won. RIP Mr. Duncan.

He's a man of honor, he's got integrity and he's got your back - always. And he's a good man - telling Del all about "Mouseville" to comfort him... shows kindness and compassion. I really like Dean, too.

Almost everyone pays the tear-toll with this movie, so don't worry about it. I think this is probably the best book-to-movie adaptation I've ever seen. Frank Darabont just GETS Stephen King in a way no one else ever has, and he had a fantastic cast who just became the characters on screen. I think it should have won all the Oscars it was nominated for - however, god forbid they reward a **gasp** Stephen King movie!

For me, the only ones close are “The Silence Of The Lambs” and “To Kill A Mockingbird”. One change that I like is that, in the book John compares himself to being lonely as a robin in the rain but in the movie it’s changed to SPARROW in the rain. I just really appreciate that.

@@tinasjostrand2677I used to have a very pretentious notion about King, in that I thought of him as only a story teller as opposed to a creator of characters. I usually bond with books that have characters that I relate to so I never really appreciated his work. I think it was after I read “Needful Things” that I realized what a wonderful character creator he actually is. The only thing is that he creates so many characters. What amazes me most is that the same man who created things like “Pet Sematary” and “It” also created “The Green Mile” and “Stand By Me” (The Body). It must be quite something to know Stephen King in real life.

It was all there...his lawyer said they couldn't find background on John Coffey. "Like he fell from the sky." The way John excitedly spoke about the earth and the stars and spoke of them like he knew them. Because he did. The background lighting of the projector over John Coffey's head, like a crown. The song about heaven. Many other clues. You should read the book, like true Stephen King fashion, he digs into the characters. What an amazing movie, never get tired of watching it.

P.S. I am 62 years old and during this time I have often been to the cinema and seen different films. I can't remember a film where so many (almost all) of the audience stayed in their seats after the film. Despite the large number of spectators, there was absolute silence both in the projection room and in the corridors. and many of my gender companions (including myself) had suspiciously red eyes and water around the eyes. There were probably sliced ​​onions in the room.

John Coffey's execution scene is devastating and it's so interesting to me that I felt like I needed to stay in the moment with him to honor him and to accompany him in his last moment. I'm Finnish and we don't have the death penalty here and I don't think it's right. It's has been so incomprehensible to me that anyone would go see an execution, but watching this movie I realized something: It's like if we the community sentence someone so dangerous they have to die, the least we can do for them is to be there with them. To not let them die alone and to witness what we have done to a human being.

Watching this brings back the memories of my grandmother not that she went through what happened. But she was born March 1894 and died December 1999 on the 26th . Just six more days and she'd have lived in three centuries. What she saw in her life still amazes me. Can you live to see traveling by horse and carriage to space travel ? That's what she did and her stories of her life from living on the Comanche reservation is mind boggling.

When Stephen King released this it came out in paperback. One month at a time for each chapter. I would buy it and read it in a day then had to wait another month for the next one. I was like a kid again waiting on a comic book.😂 This is the only movie I’ve seen where it turned as good or better than written word. A great flick!

I’ve watched this movie with many reactors and you’re the first who has left in the dialogue where John talks about being “lonely as a sparrow in the rain….” In the book it’s “Robin in the rain and I think sparrow fits in much better. That’s my favorite place in the movie so thank you…. Also “we each owe a death, there are no exceptions but, oh God, sometimes the green mile seems so long”. You left in the most important moments.

I love that Melinda gave him that medallion - St. Christopher is a patron saint... he offered protection to travelers and against sudden death, many churches placed images or statues of him, usually opposite the south door, so he could be easily seen. He is usually depicted as a giant, with a child on his shoulder and a staff in one hand. Fits John Coffey.

Hey SalvoG, I really enjoyed your reaction to The Green Mile. This was my first time watching any of your reactions. I don't know if you've seen other Tom Hanks movies like Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, Castaway or Captain Phillips just to name a few and if not I'd like to see your reactions to those movies. Other GREAT movies like Only The Brave with Josh Brolin and Miles Teller, is a GREAT movie that most reacters always overlook. Jojo Rabbit is a GREAT dark comedy I think you would like if you haven't seen it. 12 Strong and Hacksaw Ridge are GREAT movies to watch. But I'll see what you've reacted to and hopefully you'll check out those I've mentioned. Keep up the great reactions. Other GREAT movies to check out are Knox Goes Away with Michael Keaton and Al Pacino. The Lovely Bones with Mark Walberg from 2009 I think. It's a GREAT movies most overlooked. After Hours from 1985 is a dark comedy by Martin Scorses that most have overlooked but it is funny. I'll have to check out you reactions, but keep up the great work.

In the book, Paul mentions to the reader that, because of his youth and race, Wild Bill had a real chance to have his death sentence commuted (probably to Life In Prison) through the Appeals process. So Percy wasn't just wasting bullets on a condemned man.

I feel Frank Darabont is the only director who was truly able to bring Stephen King to the screen in a way that really reflects what you experience when you read the novel (although technically, neither one was a novel, Shawshank was a novella in a book of four and Green Mile was a series). I don't watch a lot of reactions to this anymore, but I could not wait to see yours, I knew you would get it all, I had a great time watching this, thank you. ✌❤

Some of the cast from The Green Mile were also in other movies with Tom Hanks. Forest Gump and Saving Private Ryan are examples. Saving Private Ryan is another with complex characters, although the beach landing at the beginning is very intense.

I read the book before seeing the movie and had to go back a few pages to be sure of what “current” time was for old Paul to younger Paul and got engrossed into the book forgetting the years in between for Paul to still be alive to tell the story. “Old Paul” played by Dabbs Greer who i watched in LIttle House on the Prairie reruns where he played the minister and looked old then so when i saw this in the theater and saw who was playing old Paul i just though PERFECT casting cause anytime i saw the actor in anything from the later 80s and 90s all i could think of “HE’S STILL ALIVE????” Cause its what i said in reading that Paul was stil alive to tell his story

Agree Salvo, great cast & on point acting. One of my top movies. Glad u made it to this one. Another good Tom Hanks movie is "Cast Away". He has plenty. Or consider Hacksaw Ridge. Then there's a very long movie called "Schindler's List". You may need to break that one into 2 parts. Based on a true story of the German concentration camps. For his book, 'the Green Mile,' I have to believe that Steven King did research on healers as well as healing techniques. I am an alternative therapist of 43 years and I've been using a healing method called Pranic Healing. This therapy uses the same energies that are used in Acupuncture, and Acupressure. The disease removal procedures used in this film are very similar to those used by shamans in old world medicine and are still used today. Kudos to Steven King for delivering such a compelling revelation!

Unfortunately, Mr. Duncan did not receive an Oscar for his performance. That's a shame, but let's be honest, it wasn't that important. The audience had already made their choice. I don't know anyone, including myself, who wouldn't have given him an Oscar. The game of this big (not as big as depicted in the film) man was simply incredibly thrilling and left us extremely impressed. We would have liked to see a lot more of him. Unfortunately, as we all know, he wasn't able to impress us any further. He has a large fan base here in Germany. This is a brilliant film with brilliant actors.

There was no effective treatment for UTI in the 1930's. Penicillin was not available until after WWII. Patients suffered for years until then. Indoor toilets were not available to most people in the 1930's. Unless you were wealthy and lived in a large city, the only facilities available, especially in rural and impoverished areas, were outhouses or WC (water closet). There is a lot of religious symbolism throughout the story "The Green Mile." Stephen King purposely wrote about this to make correlations between Jesus Christ and the "miracles" surrounding John Coffey. John's attorney said that there was no record of John's existence before his arrest, "It was like he dropped from the sky." Mister Jingles is about 65 years old when Paul visits the shed with his friend.
