Looking back at my son’s childhood wrestling, the best piece of advice I gave him before a match was, “go have fun!” The one time I can remember I said that to him was at Fargo at age 17...a few hours later I said to him, “Congrats Fargo CHAMPION!” Dads, don’t forget to keep it fun for your kids!

@JasonLayton3 жыл бұрын
I'm working on it. I take responsibility for the disconnect between our coaching philosophy and the parent's understanding of how to build a champion wrestler. You will see my strategy for fixing this in future episodes.

100% agreed, even Gavin's dad need Anger Management class cause I am pretty sure if he does not hit physically the kid, emotionally this kid is devastated, just look he is in tears while wrestling, looking at his violent father.
@aheri95303 жыл бұрын
@@JasonLayton question coach, why almost all the kids cry if they lose? You should teach them that losing could be a possibility, and they will mature if they accept that possibility. I am a Teacher and when we play or have a match, they accept the result even winning or losing, and nobody makes fun of each other, they respect the result. I like the tournaments.
@JasonLayton3 жыл бұрын
@@aheri9530 that’s just the way it is in youth wrestling, it’s different than other sports. It is so emotional, plus losing is physically painful, so most kids cry when they lose (I cried the first 3 times I lost). They will eventually gain control of their emotions though, the crying stops in the teenage years.
@finestlex3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it helps having the dads coach, but you can see how disappointed Gavin gets after his first move stopped and just gives up doesn’t help his dads screaming random stuff at him I know it wouldn’t help me, but I’m just a spectator.

Gavin’s dad should buy himself a nice set of compact binoculars - I like Nikon Prostaff 3S - and watch from the other side of the gym. His bellowing and histrionics have considerable negative impact on Gavin’s confidence and performance.

Ethan’s dad is actually pretty laid back and very positive...if you watch any of the other episodes where they interact it’s always positive. The dad doesn’t ever seem to put any pressure on him.
@johnhauser12073 жыл бұрын
@@wassuupnick Thanks for the compliment. Ethan puts enough pressure on himself. All of them do. They just need to know that if they don't quit the match and try their best it is good enough. That will follow them in life. Some times you get 1 chance at something and if you quit because it gets a little hard you can regret it for ever. Better to learn that lesson as a kid on the mat.
@brianandzane3 жыл бұрын
Some people like to bring all that emotional intensity to their kids match, that's fine. Some like technical support, but whatever. 😂 Well put Jason. Example: get off your knees, quit being lazy!!! Coaches example: Go cat back, knee slide, build your base and finish the takedown from your feet with a trip. Instead of yelling in a negative manner, the coach gives a positive action plan to move forward in the match. It works much better.

jason why do you let all the dads coach their kids during the state tournament? or even coach at all?
@JasonLayton3 жыл бұрын
It's their children, so they can do as they like. Most parents would prefer me in the corner. I can't make demands like that (don't coach your child), as it would cause us to lose many of our wrestlers. Also, I am not always available to coach. Some parents do it right, some don't. Some wrestlers love having mom or dad in the corner, others hate it; it all depends on the communication style between the two.

It for a state title. Thats usually the kids main goal every year. losing can be heartbreaking
@buzzkillington52703 жыл бұрын
I didn’t wrestle as a kid but I did recently start BJJ classes with my son. I can tell you it is very uncomfortable being physically dominated by another person and having your body put in positions that are painful. These kids spend hours waiting around for a match and that allows you a lot of time to build up pressure on yourself. Also compare it to a kids soccer match that lasts an hour, these matches are 100% intensity for only a few minutes. Other sports you are out on the field with your whole team but in combat sports, it’s only with nobody else to blame and all eyes are on you. I will also add that I had to lose/cut 9lbs in a couple weeks for my first tournament and that made me very irritable . This isn’t and expert answer, just my observations from my son’s first wrestling season. It’s a very tough sport but that’s why we love it

@buzzkillington52703 жыл бұрын
@@jillurmalik1 I train at The Factory in Dillsburg PA. I’ve been training since January and I’m registered for my 3rd and 4th tournaments already. I love the competition and all of the work leading up to it but I’m a semi-emotionally mature adult lol. I think a certain level of emotion is healthy in wrestling. I remember a tournament last season when my son (6 years old) lost his first match due to some mental mistakes. He was mad about it and it was the first time I’ve seen him show any emotion over the result of his match (he has limited understanding of points system and basically just goes hard for a pin). He kept telling me that he should have beat that kid and he was right but I explained to him that the only thing he could do now was go win the other 4 matches in pool. He was able to use that frustration from the first match to beat some wrestlers that were more experienced than him and earn his very first medal. I think emotion is good but you need to learn how to harness it and use it for something positive. I don’t discourage my son from getting mad/crying or whatever else he wants to do but I won’t allow him to show disrespect to his opponent or referees. It’s fine to get emotional over things you can control and there’s always something you could have done better.
