For the first time in a few years, magmatic uplift is ongoing in Iceland that isn’t at Askja or the Reykjanes peninsula!

The most interesting thing of this intrusion is that, since at least the Holocene, Torfajökull has behaved 'passively', i.e. only erupting when magma intrudes from the neighboring Hekla and Bárđarbunga volcanoes. Hekla intrusions bypass the magma chamber, so they only erupt basalt on Torfajökull's fissure swarm. Bárđarbunga's intrusions that make it this far, however, end up in Torfajökull's magma chamber, where magma mixing occurs. This forces rhyolites out, before basalt is erupted (and thus producing a lava flow). So for Torfajökull to have an intrusion on its own, without changes noted at the usual suspects, is unusual.

The area around Lake Superior has very different geology in the Keweenaw Peninsula than elsewhere in Michigan. Even the western & eastern regions of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan are vastly different. An ancient rift zone made the region around Lake Superior very rich in metal deposits from raw copper, iron ore, nickel, & gold. Many sulfide deposits were put down with precious metals that are still mined today. This area has always fascinated me & maybe worthy of an episode.

Nice, this is all pretty worrying. The region is very beautiful and attracts many hikers. The landscape is pretty unique and the Laugahraun lavafield has a lot of obsidian. When there is an eruption that comes into contatc with a large body of water or ice, the result may be ash clouds that contact glass particles and we have a similar event as 2010 when air travel accross the North Atlantic was severly disturbed. Besides the Torfajökull glacier itself there are many lakes and rivers in the area

A rhyolitic volcano...Same with Katla, even though the volcano may not erupt, we should still watch it due to possible Jokulhlaups (Sorry if I spealled it wrongly.)!
@uhcsheep223
@uhcsheep223 Жыл бұрын
Pretty concerned on how close the volcano Katla is to this volcano as Katla has been pretty active over the years and still 'overdue' for an eruption. Do you think that if this volcano does decide to erupt that it has the potentional to destaplise Katla & possibly cause the eruption there? Was curious if there had been previous eruptions that co-inside when Katla erupts afterwards. Doesn't look so good for the people in Iceland with quite a few of these volcanoes showing signs of unrest especailly ones that are known in the past to have big eruptions. Keep up the great work & I do love learning more about Iceland's volcanoes at depth with your videos :)

Some of those graphics with titles only pop up for a short time. I pause them to read, but the KZbin video control overlay blocks it. Are you familiar with the concept of _Title Safe Area_ in television? You may want to move all graphics andtext up about 60 pixels. I've seem several youtubers now publishing in a 2:1 aspect ratio letterbox to give 60 px on both top and bottom. I wonder if title safe or action safe areas is why.

Just a note on pronunciation of Icelandic names. Both Fagradalsfjall and Torfajökull has the double-L at the end. In English, this would just be pronounced as an L. I notice that when you pronounce Fagradalsfjall, you seem to pronounce the LL as a K. But when you pronounce Torfajökull, you prounounce the LL as an L. Both of those are wrong. In Icelandic, LL is pronounced as TL. So Fagradalsfjall is pronounced as "FagradalsfjaTL". And Torfajökull is pronounced as "TorfajökuTL". Given that I assume you will be pronouncing a lot of Icelandic names on this channel, I thought it might be useful for you to know.

In the Warden / Harrismith area of South Africa there are some brilliant examples of ancient volcanic activity. Some increadable examples can be seen of old volcanic lava "plugs" topped by subsequent, and probably much later ash layers. The top softer layer being weathered looking like icing atop a cake. I am sure these are some of the best examples of such activity in the world. You might want to look into these formations. Regards from South Africa

occurence of eruption are -8000 -7000 -4500 -1300 +0 +870 +1477 so with statics we cant say eruption chance after only 646 year is low. meaning magma chamber is far from be full..uplift must be survey, but doesnt mean it is ready to burst.

Ok, let me get these priorities correct. At 0:37: Volcanic island-wide ash-fall is bad, but air-traffic disruption is even worse? As a biologist and conservationist, I would _love_ for all air traffic to cease so as to reduce the tonnage of CO2 released by these human vanities called "tourism" and "business". I am not a geologist, but we do share that "deep time" concept between our scientific specializations.
