Wrapping up a very difficult 9-year cohabitation situation and going my own way! Just bought a house in a state far far away from this one. I've lived alone before and took my peace for granted. I'm 67 now and excited to live alone again. I can't imagine being in another relationship. Besides, the pool of men at this age is not something I want to dip my toe into. Leftovers (meaning, broken unwanted), health issues, stuff like that. Enough mistakes I've made. Clean slate, fresh start, positive energy only. Also, a friend and I have talked about the idea of community living with other ladies, as you mentioned in your video. Our thought was buying land and having tiny homes on them.

Same for me. No kids, but my ex was an emotional child for those 33 years so I learned LONG ago to be strong and independent. We're crazy about each other, and distance keeps it that way.

Totally understand! I have a friend with benefits IF I choose to that part. He lives a 4 hour drive from me so if he decides to come up for a visit, he knows that he needs to let me know in case I'm out. He's highly intelligent, attractive to look at, sweet kind and gentle ... and 18 years younger than I at 68. I'd never consider living with someone as I have my Cavalier King Charles spaniel who keeps me smiling. Living alone was rather daunting at the beginning but I wouldn't change my idea of living alone with my pooch. I know so many women who think the same way as I. None want another man living under the same roof, but they do like having a man to go to the theatre, etc ... but apart from that they love it. However living the single life does impact financially as a couple living together seem to receive double the income more than for singles as we still have to pay the full housing costs that couples can share half of it, same for electricity, and medications as they can reach the limit of free scripts by combining their free prescription limits so receive the full costs as a single person needs to reach to be eligible for free prescriptions. I spend about $100/month, but they only have to reach the same combined spending limit as I do as a single person. They can also share the costs of living costs, and so very much more while single person has to pay double for the couple who are able to share their costs, for what the couples can share but a single still has to reach double the same cost limits that many single women have to reach before they are eligible for the same things. It seems to me that governments don't seem to comprehend .... we singles have to reach double of everything compared to couples living with the same costs. This really makes me angry because the baby boomer women always had to work harder than the men, and only the men were invited to join the superannuation fund, but they said that women don't need it to raise a family that single women did even though we had to support our children, and usually their fathers didn't do. It came a very cruel life for women just because they choose to live without a man in our lives .... and that seems very unfair to women who had to do it alone for many years. Not the right way to get the votes for politicians... in Australia I can see a lot of the pollies who won't be getting a lot of what they refer to safe seats, but unless they do something to make life easier for single women, they won't have their cushy jobs after the next election!

I live alone. I have never been happier. I raised my children and then a grand child, I was a hands on single, working mom for 50, yes 50 years! I cherish all the life experiences I had with my family, but feel so good, enjoying solitude. I am an artist and sewist, I enjoy reading. I enjoy the time I can spend doing what I want to do. I don’t watch tv, I like tutorials and making things. I now live in a senior apartment, this is the life I envisioned. However not everyone feels the same way. I have a neighbor who constantly complains about boredom. She says that what she envisioned moving here was visiting with neighbors, social activities, etc. so we all do not aspire for sameness.

I can do whatever, whenever I want to, go wherever I want to, and be with whoever I want to. What's not to like about that? No one around to get on my nerves. If anything goes wrong it's my fault and It's pretty hard to get upset with myself. I'm comfortable being alone without feeling lonely. If I do start feeling lonely then I pick up my phone and call a friend or family member. Wouldn't have it any other way 😊

I have been alone (divorced) for 30 years. I love every minute of it. I have a lovely wonderful family of children and grandchildren and we all keep in touch. I think one of the things that works for me is my hobbies. I am busy. I have friends, church involvement and I am a life long learner. I really try to help other people. Been divorced for years, kids finally flown the nest, and living alone for the first time in my life. Mostly, I love it. I can read, or write, or whatever else I feel like doing to suit myself. If I can't sleep, and crave curry at 3am, I will cook it and really enjoy it. I don't have to worry about disturbing anyone, or neglecting them; they are all off doing their own thing and I'm free to do mine. I do still see them often - some more often than others, but that's life. I'm happy to have company when I choose to, both friends and family, I love them dearly. But this is my time now. I have so much still to learn, and see, and places I want to visit - I've waited a long time for this, I intend to make the most of my senior years. And I need to be left alone to do that.

An old study on marriage found the happiest people were married men and single women. I am 49, never married and lost a lot of my life to being in relationships where I chose the ((perceived) obligation of the relationship over what I really wanted. I don't live alone, I live with my cat (without obligation only adoration). I hope I have him for a very long time but once he is gone, I will live the nomadic life I have wanted for all my life for as long as I can.

I lived my life (mostly) with men. I loved the ones I just lived with, and adored my two husbands, one of twenty-five years. However, living by myself since my second husband (and soul mate) died, I have learned what it means to be truly independent. No men ever made me do anything I didn't want to do, but I have learned to relish my private life, just for me. I am a prolific artist, writer and do tarot readings for lovely clients on the phone. I have become better at handling money, and released my compulsive overeating. Now and then I get lonely, but it's rare, and loneliness happens even when one is with others. I am surviving beautifully, and meeting challenges on my own and getting stronger because of it. The men were always my rocks. I leaned on them, and am grateful for the love they gave. But now I'm happily my own rock.

I often joke that I can barely live with myself let alone anyone else. But it's kinda true. I am "somewhat particular" about certain things. I'm 66 and have lived quite happily with only my feline friends since I retired from the USMC in 1996 and moved back to my home state to be near family (we're close so I have not BEEN alone - a big difference there). I then took a second job as a defense contractor for the Army and retired from that in 2017. Since then I've been taking advantage of the extra time to learn new skills and increase time on my jewelry crafting. Besides giving as gifts, I also sell at consignment shops, a few Fall/Winter craft fairs, and occasionally at a large flea market near me, not as a business, just to let some of the build up go and recoup the cost of materials. When I have overstock that doesn't sell at a couple events, I donate it to the local clothes closet associated with the town food pantry. The latest adventure is learning about how to manage a construction project renovating a property I inherited from an aunt a few years ago, the house itself and the landscaping are in dire shape. This decision to renovate came about when I decided to downsize to a single level home - the other house is one level about half the size of this one. The decision to manage it myself came as result of prior experience with having construction managers and knowing the potential for miscommunication, project delays, and of course, the cost. My time is my own so I can devote as much to it as necessary. Still, it's probably a good thing I enjoy a challenge!

I like the last line of the article... " Life on your own can be daunting. It can also be rewarding. Your choice." Being alone isn't always our choice, but hearing that we have some control (solitary confinement vs. freedom) is motivating. Thank you for sharing the great ideas to get me thinking outside of the box. Sometimes I don't realize that I'm in a box, and too lazy to move. I will say , that one of the negatives I look out for is becoming self-centered, because I am responsible for only myself. Having outside interests, that include others, helps me stay interested and interesting and hopefully well rounded.

I am almost 77 years old and have been a widow for nearly 30 years. I have been very lonely at times, in the early years after my husband death. However, our children grew up and away and I adjusted. I do enjoy being alone, doing whatever I choose, just enjoy the freedom. I do care for myself, drive whenever or wherever, even out of town day trips. I know this won't last forever, nothing does, however I am certainly going to enjoy it while it lasts. I realize I am in a very fortunate position and I am sincerely grateful. I always have my children and communicate regularly, love them dearly and deeply, happy to say like them too. Life is good. My health though not perfect is pretty good. I still miss my husband, that's probably why I never wanted to marry again, it's best to have a man in you life rather than in your house! hahahahahaha I don't have that either, but that's my philosophy and I'm sticking to it! Keep a positive outlook, always. Also, Laughter saves you, always find something to laugh about even when just yourself. hahahahaha I also enjoy reflecting on my life, if there is reincarnation what qualities do want for the next time around, if there is one. What will my last breath be like, my last thought, last whatever. Just enjoy ruminating at times, without interruption. Oh, I have out lived three dogs, two turtles, a male parakeet, named Billy Bird, as well as my husband. At present have two female cats who are special girls, have had them 12 (calico) and 10 (siamese) years, feral from my neighborhood. Love the girls too, smart and understand many words. The 12 year old Calico just had ultrasound and surgery to remove a large growth on her right hip. She is recovering quite well and doesn't have a limp as was possible, she is a beautiful long haired Calico. I had a neighbor once who asked me didn't I miss having someone to tell me they love me, I replied, I do have someone. He asked who? I said, the person I see in the morning when I brush my teeth! He looked annoyed, hahahahaha See what I mean by laughter? Look for humor, it's there. It's just life, live it while you can.

I separated from my husband 7 years ago, and left a huge detached rural house for a small semi in a city suburb, and I wouldn't ever swap back again. My youngest son came with me initially, then left for 3 years to go to university. In 2017 he came back to live at home with me after graduation and getting a job, and has only just left to share a flat in the town ! So now I'm alone again, but I'm content and don't mind really. I've been doing up this little house and garden in stages, and love doing most of it myself. I think it helps that although I'm a young 61, I still work part time in a medical practice, and also volunteer for the Red Cross so I go to work 5 days a week. This gets me out and about, meeting people all day, and seeing colleagues. I love the fact I can do what I want, decorate how I like, stay in and not go out if I don't feel like it etc. The only thing I miss having a man for is electrical and plumbing work on the house !😁
