Even though I am not a beginner, I am following the course. Korey is a great guitarist and instructor. Wish he was still close to my area but youtube videos work. Good to see you putting this out there Korey.

This is so much better than my last attempt a year ago with another online teacher. I really like the weekly format. I have something to sink my teeth into, and I can work on that for week. Rather than a 30 days to Play, let's build a firm foundation!

Little first day feedback: that spider exercises on 70 bpm feel insanely tough challenge (feels almost impossible) for complete beginner. But when it begins to succeed (although not perfectly) - a wonderful feeling of satisfaction))

70 is the proficiency “goal” so look at it like scoring a “100” on a test - many will have to start slower and work their way up to 70. Glad you are working through it!

Thanks Korey for this course so very helpful. Doing the 1,2,3,4 last week my picking hand between my first finger and thumb had some tingling and kind of goes up my arm. Any exercises or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Shoulder was kind of aching too. Thanks for your help.

I have an acoustic sigma (Martin generic dread) along with Les Paul. Along with your lessons I was going through D shaped caged using quarter, eight, triplet, 16th. For each of the shapes. In major arpeggios and pentatonic scales. Too much maybe?

Hard one. I’ve been shortly playing for a long time in and out. At least I could play a g cord… never realized I was muting so much on the a string. Now all those years on muscle memory. It feels so awkward to reposition. Really enjoying the lessons though

Hey Corey thanks for your videos and channel. I’m one of those intermediate players being playing for 13 years but still not able to solo fluently etc. If one follows your lessons for a year where could one expect to be level wise if one does what you say 🤔. It’s a long time to trust a process 😂. Thanks again.

by the end of the year, a student would: 1: have the required skills (see below) necessary to join their first band, go to open mics, learn songs on their own, jam sessions, write their own music, and most importantly understand the overall scope of guitar proficiency (what would it take to be an advanced intermediate? A semi-pro? A pro? etc.) 2: Quick recall of all notes and intervals on the fretboard 3: all major scales in all 12 keys (84!) and their corresponding relative minor keys 4: a complete understanding of diatonic harmony (what chords are in each key? What notes are available?), which gives the student the practical knowledge of logically being able to figure songs out by mind/ear "oh F major and G major, when always together, means I'm in C Major. That means I can go here and...." 5: basic improvisational/soloing ability in major keys 6: a chord vocabulary of over 200 chords 7: all triads and their inversions on strings 1-3 and 2-4 8: basic sight-reading ability in major keys 9: playing whole songs that are 100% in BEGINNER levels 10: basic rhythmic fluency 11: experience in multiple genres (classical, blues, rock, funk, country, worship) I know it sounds different - but when you look at the whole scope of guitar instructional material (through the pro and Doctorate level) This IS beginner stuff. Part of the point in this course is to help so many players understand that they are, in fact, beginners (remember, how many YEARS you have played has no meaning on beginner/intermediate/advanced) it is total # of HOURS and MASTERY OF CONCEPTS, DEMONSTRATION OF PROFICIENCY. 99% percent of the time, when I get a new student that tells me they are semi-pro, or weekend warrior, or 'intermediate' - they don't have many of these skills learned. They skip over them to get 'to the good stuff', which puts you in a prison. Once you have spent a month learning 'sweet home alabama' or 'pride and joy' as your FIRST song, the ego won't let you go back and do this stuff. So people don't!

First of all, day 1 I quickly noticed that I absolutely cannot play sitting down, have to be standing with a strap. Second, I gradually got better at the 1 2 3 4, all week I did my first low E to high E back to low E with index finger on the 7th fret. At first I could only stretch my middle and ring far enough to go down to the 3rd fret, but by now I can at least decently do it down to the 1st fret, ring finger still isn't great and I still need my calluses, but I saw a slight improvement every time I got back to the guitar (at least a few times a day). Third, I passed the string recognition with ease. Fourth, a bit of a vent. 9s on a 24" scale length is dumb, my low E is so damn floppy. Now for the week ahead, looks like I'll be spending a lot more time throughout the day with the new series of tasks. Would you say it's good to do each task on their own, take a break after the designated amount, come back for the next task, rinse and repeat? I like to break things down into bite sized chunks. I'll likely do a wall of text each week. My right handed friend has been practicing as he should, when he's home from work that is, but my left handed friend just informed me that he didn't even start, so he's got quite a bit of catch up to do

@KoreyHicksGuitar

each of the tasks should be done every day - not all in one go until you 'pass' the proficiency. look at your playing like training as an athlete - can't work legs for 2 months, then arms for 2 months... etc. much better to do a little each day. The practicing regimen is going to get full VERY quickly with lots of little tasks to do each day. Back in music school, when I would practice 10-12 hours a day, that consisted of 20-30 separate skills that were touched on every day.

Hey man really appreciate these videos. Was wondering as someone that’s already been playing for a few months and has learnt a few chords, pentatonic scale, and some songs (some with barre chords) - i noticed you said you must master something before going to another. I didn’t learn in the most “linear” way and skipped over some of the open chords when I started and am now going back to master them. I would still consider myself a beginner but just not at the stage currently in the series. My question is would you say following this series would help someone like me who has surpassed some of the concepts but still has some gaps here and there? (Also for context I have a teacher and I’ve told them I want to master the basics and learn proper technique, fingerpicking, strumming, fretting cleanly etc) Thanks and sorry for the long winded comment!
@KoreyHicksGuitar

@@jellyj8194 yes absolutely, and there are a lot of proficiency checks and tests that will determine just how well you know the things that you do know! Remember, just because you can play something doesn’t mean you really know it. With every musical skill, you have have to memorize it with the mind, the ear and then the hand. A lot of people assume because they can play something (such as a chord) means they can move on, but you really need to understand it’s function, how it sounds, etc., so that you can know where to use it in the future or even just hear it in a song you want to learn and know that that’s the same chord. this saves a lot of frustration in the long run and a lot of people get really frustrated when they have to backtrack and learn beginner concepts when they view themselves as intermediate or even advanced. The ego takes a hit and they just assume they don’t have to learn it so they never do!

@@KoreyHicksGuitar Would you say the same for me? I can play most chords you typically see in popular music and barre chords. Im self taught meaning I never actually learned the guitar. Meaning i never really did scales and I would probably fail a test on where every note is haha, or it would take me 30 seconds to find them. I also struggle with strumming and timing I would say. Ive been taking singing lessons, so my goal is to get more consistent with guitar with figuring out songs and playing and singing etc I consider myself an "advanced beginner" or been stuck here for years lol
