Hi Athena! Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. While they don't class themselves as a metal band, they don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog mayhem to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. One thing you must know is that Band Maid are the opposite of a one hit wonder band. From their catalogue of more than 120 songs, fans always debate about which are the best ones, because every top 20 songs from each person is going to be a different one. Band Maid doesn't even play often some of their most successful songs in live shows, their catalogue is so deep and versatile. You have opened the floodgates. They may be the best rock group in the world today (I think they are). They are certainly the most creative band since the Beatles, and they are top-tier musicians. I saw many of the classic rock bands - Purple, Zeppelin, Queen, Santana, many more, all in their heyday. I’ve seen Band-maid three times and their performances stand up to any of those legendary bands. You are going to get a lot of suggestions. First, a little background on the band: Saiki Atsumi - Lead vocals Born Feb 8, 1994 MISA - Bass Born Oct 15, 1992 Kanami Tono - Lead guitar, Main composer and arranger Born Sept 28, 1991 Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing vocal Born Oct 21, 1991 Akane Hirose - Drums Born Dec 14, 1990 Miku was working in a Maid Café after being in an idol group that didn’t break through. She envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, after finding a Kanami guitar cover on line; Kanami then recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Akane and MISA had been students together at the Tokyo Music Academy. The group decided they needed more vocal “oomph”, and collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar when they started, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that she is really adding to the music mix, and Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual shred. The band was struggling early on, and in 2014, even as the label was considering dropping them, they posted the music video for “Thrill” which went viral globally. When they realized what was going on, it gave them the momentum to forge ahead, and they have now done multiple tours of Europe and the U.S. and are building a global fanbase who call themselves the Maidiacs. They have released seven full albums, as well as several EPs, singles and music videos. They have put out around 170 songs, covering a wide variety of styles and sounds, without any duds. They combine a punk vibe with instrumental virtuosity (two things that are often seen as being incompatible), and have done some amazing progressive-rock songs and ballads with a metal edge to them. They toured the U.S. in 2022 and sold out 14 cities in less than 48 hours. They followed it up with a 2023 tour which had to be expanded from their original plans. Their fan base skews heavily to actual practicing musicians. Some of those followed the band to multiple dates and documented everything on youtube-some of the footage is hilarious. I’ve seen them in 2019, 2022 and 2023. Their shows are truly life-reaffirming. So far no announcements of another European tour but it seems likely in 2025. Band-Maid are that rare band that sound perfect live, even better than in the studio. Great reaction and Band-Maid serves up the best rock in the world. They also are the top band for cats as they always include a fourth track in each song written in "cat" and recorded at a very high frequency that only cats can hear. The fans call their music "smile rock" and will cure all ailments. Roger is the commandant of the Royal Carrier Pigeon brigade, tasked with spreading the music of Band-Maid around the world.

If you follow Roger's advice, you've got a great Chance of hearing a fantastic song! And just a little advice from a Maidiac. These ladies are hard to categorize because they don't stick to a genre so you can hear totally different type songs from one to another. And their abilities are phenomenal now. They work so hard at what they do that they've become a "musician's band", while still offering up the fun and the hooks to all and sunder. Especially sunder. 😉 They're more hard rock than anything else but they'll go into metal, punk, post-punk, dreamy ballads, power ballads and everything in between. Enjoy - keep listening to them and you'll gradually start getting just how great they are! Almost forgot - they also have the magical power to make you happier than you were before you listened. Really. Truly.

@@AthenaDKThat’s great to hear!! Yes, in my opinion, you’ll notice a big change in their more recent music compared to their older material. The new music has deeper and richer flavors. They do many more layers of everything in their songs. I’m guessing you will still like it but it may take a bit of getting used to it; to getting your head around everything that is happening might take a few listens. But once you grasp everything, the music is simply glorious in its depth and quality. They have a new MV being released today, in 3 hours, and personally I’d recommend you skip forward and react to these new song to see how far they’ve come from the days of Alone. Since you listen to J-rock...Yoshiki from X-Japan brought Band-Maid to be their opening act when The Last Rockstars toured the US. Band-Maid has a great catalogue of songs and they love when people do reactions.

Baid-Maid has a great pure rock sound. Another Japanese band you need to listen to is Lovebites. They are also an all-female band. Their style is power and thrash metal. It's a band that needs to be seen live. Start with the song The Hammer of Wrath from the Knockin at Heaven's Gate tour. I think you will really like them.

If you’re not familiar with Man With A Mission yet, you should definitely check out their songs "Dead End in Tokyo" and "The Anthem". lyrics of their are amazing, often touching on themes like personal growth, inner struggles, the search for meaning in life, and the drive to overcome challenges. You might find some great songs to add to your playlist ;)

BM4-Life gave you the band member rundown. I would say Misa's nickname is "The Barefoot Assasin". She was never comfortable with the original maid cafe' outfit, and her costume morphed into something darker. She plays barefoot whenever she can. Miku, the backup vocalist and rhythm guitar, is the founder. Took the maids playing heavy rock idea to another production company after her Idol contest formed band broke up. The reference to pigeons, and maidiacs (their fans) using an abbreviated Japanese ononomopea for pigeon, "po", at the end of sentences is due to her on-stage and interview persona of a wise but fun-loving old pigeon. All band members get praised by other musicians. I highly recommend the seven part biographical documentary by Ohrenje. 11 years, over 130 songs, and still going ( for example, this years collaborations with the Mexican sister band The Warning).

A thing about the maid outfits, Athena: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids. Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

@@AthenaDK Not at all. I have more to that file I will add, so you will know a little bit more of the Ladies history. Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead. Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition. Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition. Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music. Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well) So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance. And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD! ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!! Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan. Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning" On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"... The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited) This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their KZbin channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill. Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid. I and others have much more info about the Ladies and their music. So if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. We would be more than delighted to help you answer them.

Yeah, much more like 'OOR' (with a bit of 'Hello Sleepwalkers') than BABYMETAL. ... but Band-Maid is the top of them all, although for all of those bands I'd have a hard time naming a song of their's I didn't love ... especially Band-Maid ... add some Kalafina some Angelia and you have Japanese ('pop'/punk/rock) bands that only play great listenable 'never feel the need to skip a song' music.

The maid costumes are to create "the Gap" meaning the difference in what you are seeing, demure maids vs what you are hearing Hard Rock. Many Japanese bands use "the Gap" to stand out as a band.
