I had to wait a year to get my purple Genesis. It was worth the wait though. You are right about the pickups, they are vintage output about 7.5K ohms. I swapped them out for a Dimarzio set and that guitar is the best one in my collection now.

The bridge pickup is actually 15,5 K ohms, that's pretty hot, more than a Duncan Nazgul. If you have an amp with a good high-gain channel these Ibanez pickups can get you decent tones.

Dave from Jane’s Addiction is one of my all time favorite guitar players so I inherently love this body style/shape of Ibanez. I know he mainly plays PRS now, but last time I saw them he played his (or one of) white RG on “Been Caught Stealing.” Fun fact - it was the second to last show at Irvine Meadows. They played the entire Ritual album, plus a few more songs.

Picked this up in Desert Yellow in summer of 2020 after reaching a milestone age. I used to drool over these when I was a teen but could never afford them at the time. So it was a present to myself for sure. Wonderful instrument, quality is excellent and that neck is in a class of its own!

You have to swap the magnets in the pickups and they sound way better!!! Put the alnico in the neck and ceramic in the bridge, they shouldve been this way from the factory but theyre opposite. I think Ibanez did a great job balancing the old with the new. Love that they have the classic neck joint but I also love the 5 piece neck and volute for strength and the fact they fixed the neck pocket from cracking. Only problem is it comes with rough frets and fret ends but nothing some polishing cant fix. What more can you ask for from a MIJ guitar for under a grand? I sold my red one but might pick up a yellow one

I bought my 1980's RG 550 secondhand in 1991, and I still have it. It did have a maple fingerboard, but I had a new neck fitted after the original split, it's had new pickups, Damarzio's, new pots, new knobs and switch tip, Cust made truss rod cover, new trem, I hated the original trem as I drove me nuts when the arm would never stay where I wanted it to, new wiring, and new jack socket. The only original parts on it are the body, scratch plate, back plates, and machine heads.

I have an RG350MDX that I guess is the last of the maple fretboards with the black sharktooth inlays that they stopped making in 2010. @@TreatzTMAthe whole point of the 550 five way switching system is dependent upon the middle pickup to approximate strat tones. Position 2 and 4 are really great for clean picking and even with the middle pickup set low it still does a lot in positions 2 and 4 . I’ve had my 550 in all kinds of different pickup and switching configurations but ultimately came back to a stock-ish set up with a Duncan Distortion in the bridge and a Pearly Gates in the neck and for now the stock S1 in the middle with push pull pots for series/parallel on the Duncan’s. I thought I wouldn’t miss the middle pickup but those in between tones are what makes the RG550 so versatile. The cool thing about them and being front routed is it’s easy to try different pickup configurations but the 550 can cover about any type of music with its HSH and the super switch.

I've never owned an RG but I remember when they came out in '87, which I think of as the year of the great Ibanez revival, when they really began to conquer the guitar world, or at least the super strat world. I remember trying the RG, the similarly inspired Jem, the Saber and other models. I thought of the RG as the ultimate shred stick at the time. I agree that the pickups on contemporary RGs do not sound as good as the more PAF design of the 80s. If I had an RG I would pop in either a Tone Zone/True Velvet Middle/Air Norton set, or go for the Vai Evolution set, or pop in a MoJoe/True Velvet Middle/PAF Pro set.

I managed to pick up a used purple genesis a few years ago and its so fantastic. The neck is like a wafer and in truth probably not my favourite shape but it plays into the whole hot-rodded 80s speed vibe. I thought the V pickups were not too bad at all but I did replace with some gold Dimarzio Gravity Storms. The only thing i miss about the og pickups is the in between sounds have this nasally thin sound that some might hate but I found really characterful and unique, after replacing the pickups it now has a more typical in between sound, fuller and arguably better but slightly less character.

I loved my RG550, an 89 Desert Yellow model I refinished in a black stain, black headstock. Dimarzio Tone Zone & Steve Morse Bridge in the neck. Tbh I want to try the Morse again, it seemed like it just worked as a high output neck pickup to 18yo me. Once I bought my first Gibson, though, it immediately fell to #2. A 24 3/4" ball bat just fits my big mitts perfectly. If you have a classical background, you may love the wide/thin Wizards. Probably an easy port over from classical acoustic necks. But, there's no perfect neck shape for everyone. Thinnest might not be fastest in your hands. But if these are still made to that old standard, it's a quality option at a good price if you like you some RG.

Loving it - but doesn't have the bite my EVH Striped or EVH 5150 have (both which I got new for under 1k - although I think they both sell for just over that now). I think the clean may win on the Ibanez. Suggestions on upgraded pickups? For stuff like GnR, Metallica, Zeppelin, Hendrix, AC/DC. My first guitar was a used blue RG550 back in the 90', it was an amazing guitar, and the closest thing to the signature Steve Vai Jem that I could afford at the time. 🎸🥇👌🙂

Always wanted one of these. My first electric guitar was an Ibanez GIO in red with the black pickguard. Thought it would be cool to have more of a pro version of it

You can find plenty of these on the used market in all three colors. I had an OG 550 and have checked out one of the new ones. I prefer the old school neck since it's more of a gloss finish, which I like. Didn't realize I had a unicorn but my 550 was pink. Haven't seen one since I sold it (except the Jem reissues). Still looking if I can get my hands on that guitar again.

I have something very similar to these but it’s called the Heartfield Talon by Fender. Fender made em in the same Fujigen factory back in the 90s

Thanks for the opportunity Robert! I'm a huge fan of 80's amd 90's instruments. This is one of the main ones I've always wanted, but in yellow, thought this red works too!😊

Bought a yellow 550 genesis a few years back. It is a great guitar. I ended up swapping the stock pickups for some pink DiMarzio PAF Pros in order to make it more like the original JEM guitars. I've always wanted one of the early JEMs with the disappearing pyramid inlays but I can't afford that so the closest I can get is putting pink pickups and green knobs on a 550.

I own the OG version 550! Great appreciation for Ibanez guitars! Still clarity w/ volume lowered, yet the OG is brighter and has more attack than the New . And THANK YOU FOR THE CONTEST! I ENTERED! Great Job! THX!

Got the Ibanez RG550 PN last month. Amazed by the quality, how easy it is to play and the variety of tone in the pickups. 5/5.

the new rg550s looks so odd to me with the spanking new maple boards and necks, its probably what the 80s one looked like when it was new too but I'm too used to seeing the aged look

Was the neck replaced on the old one? I had an original 1987 550 and the headstock matched the body

Sold my “red” (more like pinkish red) original RG550 to afford a pink 1987 (OG not the LTD reissue) ESP Mirage Deluxe. I would love to see a comparison of the OGs. I liked the ESP neck better but the guy at my local guitar shop thought the neck on the RG550 was the best he’d played.

From where I'm listening it seems like the new one has a more balanced tone output, almost like active pickups versus passive. But again that's just me listening in my car. And it kind of sounded like the OG version was hitting the compressor harder. I could be wrong just throwing my two cents in there.

I could be wrong but doesn't that plastic film left on pickups darken up your sound a bit?

That’s a smexy guitar for sure! Nothing bad about it from what I’ve heard. Even the trem keeps up with dive bombs, which is a big deal at this price point.

Does anyone know what the original one was called in 1988, where it was fluorescent like this, but it had a humbucker, and two single coils? I had a fluorescent orange one, and I thought it was a 550, but I guess it’s not.
