About 1820 Te Rauparaha was looking for allies during the inter Maori Musket Wars. The Waikato tribe Ngati Maniapoto were expanding and Kawhia(in Waikato not Taranaki) with its harbour was prime real estate next door. Te Rauparaha (Ngati Toa) visited Ngati Tuwharetoa (near Taupo) Chief Te Heuheu (whos descendant 40yrs later ran the Brits ragged at Orakau & in the Taranaki) where he had to hide in the kumara pit and wrote Ka Mate. In the end Te Rauparaha was force out of the area to Kapati. It was only in the late 1980s under Buck Shelford that the ABs did Haka in NZ. Haka being done initially on the 1888 NZ Natives Tour the tradition was set, not in NZ. But if I had been wrong why not be polite telling me? Why the name calling? As it is you are in error, name calling compounding your foolishness.

@nicholaswhite38115 жыл бұрын
87jello We know all about the origins of this song. If you did a bit of research yourself and stop trying to display your own ignorance which is a sickening indictment of your attempt to be a self righteous idiot. It’s not British it’s English. The Welsh, Scots and Northern Irish will not thank you to be grouped in with the English in a matter of sporting competition. Unless we are competing as The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island. Swing Low Sweet Chariot was written sometime after 1865 (it’s not known exactly) the British, including the English abolished slavery in 1812 so you can’t play the self righteous card on us. As far as we are concerned it may be popular with what you call African Americans but not slaves as they did not exist when the song was written. The song has been a popular anthem in rugby clubs since the 1940s (it may be earlier but I have no primary evidence at this stage). Every single rugby player in England knows this song it is that popular. It is not sung to bring good luck, we don’t believe in magic, we stopped burning witches a long time before America too. It is sung because it is the one song that unites every rugby player in England. It unites supporters from around the country as they support the National team. The only sickening aspect is your ignorance which you use to make a false charge against English rugby supporters.

@@rosierennie5867 Scotland sing Flower of Scotland.. Which I think is a great song for uniting Scots. Even if based on a distorted view of Edward and his army.. Edward was there at the behest of lowlanders to help them put their man on the throne. A bit naive as Edward took advantage to feather his own nest. If you listen to Scots fans singing at Murrayfeild you would believe the Scots were victorious and are going to be iagain in the match in question. The Irish sing Fields Of Athenry another song which depicts the hard time the English gave to the Irish. About a young man being transported for stealing bread. The French use their National Anthem La Marseillaise to support their team. Traditionally they bring a Dax Band into the ground to play supporting melodies. Not sure if it still happens but when I lived in Twickenham in the 1970s the French always managed to sneak a live Cockerel into the ground.

You obviously have a book of laws concerning the sanctity of songs. So please can you quote the clause that means that a song's origin must be the unbending platform from which it must be sung in future on pain of your sanctimonious and judgemental sermonising. With that on board you will have a lucrative career sueing countless groups through the ages who have adopted an old tune for their own benifit; Good Morning to All - Happy Birthday to You. J. S. Bach Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring - The Beach Boys Lady Linda Martini: Plaisir d’Amour Elvis Presley - I Can’t Help Falling In Love Beethoven: Ode to Joy - Conor Oberst I'm Wide Awake Eric Carmen: All By Myself - Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2 Debussy: Clair de Lune - Janelle Monáe Say You’ll Go Hans Leip & Norbert Schultze Lili Marleen - A song sung by the German Army in WW2 but adopted and sung but the British Army in WW2. Three Lions by the Lightning Seeds sung for the English Football team in the 1996 European Championships, adopted by the German Footbal team after they won the tournament. Such narrow-minded and blinkered thinking, with resulting holier than thou and fallacious pronouncements brands you as ignorant and pompous as you are misguided.
