Rich, profound subject explained in simpliest possible chunks. Not to mention the heartwarming, pleasing voice that coaxes the students to slowly prod on. Great stuff, Maestro Tony. Much appreciated 👍👏💚

Great stuff, Tony. Thanks so much for all that you do. I've been following you and many other piano channels for the last two to three years; I'd been transitioning between colleges switching majors from Computer Science to Music Education / working. A lot of growing up has happened in that time and many days I've clicked on your videos when I want to learn some more. You are certainly an influence on me and the younger generation of musicians who are growing up and aspiring to do great things.

Tony, you're teaching this "old dog" a lot of new tricks. You're a marvelous instructor! Your Yamaha grand sounds really nice. And, well in tune. I'm curious, does a master player such as yourself tune it yourself or do you have someone else tune it? Thanks for all your patience.

I tune it.

Love these scale videos, thanks Tony! Can you or anyone recommend the best book for getting into all of the theory behind modes etc?
@hprm33t2 жыл бұрын
More simply, this is F melodic minor starting on D. Locrian #2, to me, is academic gobbledygook, particularly for those who are comfortable believing scales should be practiced beginning on a tonic note, in this case D. The other options here are, perhaps, D dimimished, or C natural minor.
@TonyWinston2 жыл бұрын
So you can think about a chord in one key and a scale in another. You have an incredible brain

Thanks ,Tony.Am a great admirer of your teaching style,material and delivery.Love the lessons. I am somewhat confused with this. I assume we're in Cm ,as Dm7 b5 is the II chord.So my logic tells me the locrian scale would begin on a B natural, the 7th degree. Am puzzled as to where the Eb scale came from as it's the Phrygian mode
@TonyWinston3 жыл бұрын
No. the 7th degree of Eb major scale. D locrian starts on D. B locrian starts on B.
@annoynymouse11463 жыл бұрын
I see where the confusion is. The modes in minor are not the same as in major. In a major key the first mode is ionian, the second is dorian... etc.. In minor (assuming you are using the natural minor scale) the first mode is aeolian, the second is locrian, the third is ionian, the fourth is dorian, the fifth is phrygian, the sixth is lydian, and the seventh is mixolydian. Now if you are using the harmonic minor or melodic minor, we get new modes with altered notes.
@carloforti2363 жыл бұрын
hello, please 2 questions : why you use C blues instead of G myxolidian on the G/ chord ? when we have a 2-5-1 in C, can we always change the Dm7 in Dm7(b5) ? thanks !
@TonyWinston3 жыл бұрын
You can change a minor 7 chord to a minor 7 flat 5 but only if it sounds good! On a G7 chord in a 251, there are many scales that you can use. Altered, diminished, lydian dominant oh, and the ones you mentioned
@alfredscoggins32063 жыл бұрын
Isn't that a Locrian natural 2, Tony? The normal Locrian is Eb major but F melodic minor has a natural E.
@TonyWinston3 жыл бұрын
Yes
@yamahal13 жыл бұрын
But anyway it sounds great and we know where to use it.

What's the scale of a Fully Diminished Chord ? For instance C ° ?
@TonyWinston10 ай бұрын
C D Eb F F# G# A B C. THIS IS ALSO THE CORRECT scale for F7b9

@@TonyWinston thank you so much ? Does the Half Whole Diminished Scale also work for a Fully Diminished Chord ?
@TonyWinston10 ай бұрын
No not really. I've seen some videos where the 'instructor' has it mixed up. Use the Half Whole on any 7b9 chord. F7 Ab7 B7 and D7 for the scale in my last comment.

At the start I just see Eb major. I don't understand why people use modes tbh
@imalamboman123 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I mean modal theory is interesting but when people say they're going to work on memorizing all the modes etc it seems a waste of time. Major, harmonic and melodic minor, dominant 7th and diminished is really all you need to get into your head and fingers.
@LotharsGuitarSchool3 жыл бұрын
Why do you call it locrian #2? I find that irritating. I'd call it locrian 9, since that's the interval that is included now. Otherwise a great lesson. Thanks.
@TonyWinston3 жыл бұрын
Because everyone calls it loc.#2. ur the first one I've heard call it 9 tho I agree its a good name, I'm not into inventing new terminology.

Locrian mode is THE SECOND DEGREE OF A MAJOR SCALE USE THE MELODIC MINOR SCALE WHEN U SEE A V CHORD...SIMPLICITY..YOO MUCH TALKING HERE
@TonyWinston3 жыл бұрын
Maybe but nobody says it that way. The second degree of a major scale is called the supertonic. Locrian mode begins on the 7th degree of a major scale.
