Oh, come on. Since there wasn't any bait for his "pet" mice, they had no incentive to go further. Add bait and they'd just as quickly go for it. In other words, contrary to what he said, not "very different."

I had a mouse in the house one winter, I got a live catch trap and got him...so, I went to Pet Smart and got a hamster cage, and kept him for three months, until the spring...then let him go far away from the house...I learned a lot about mice in those three months. Once, he was running on the wheel, when he saw me looking at him, he flew off the wheel...it was the funniest thing I had ever seen, ya had to be there...🤣🤣🤣😆😆😆

You can build one pretty ez. 5 gal bucket. A coat hanger for an axle, and pop can for the wheel and a yard stick for the access ramp. The hardest part is drilling the holes in the CENTER of the top and bottom of the pop can. Smear a little peanut butter on the pop can and the ramp to attract the mice. A bit of water in the bucket prevents escape. Works for chipmunks too

The ladder seems like a good invention and with 1/2 a rolling log there isn't the option to escape by running the length like its an obstacle in some Japanese game show. Having to do a 180 turn rather than run forward seems difficult.

@GaiaMind I agree. And besides, I'd rather pay more for a solid metal trap that will last for years than buy cheap plasticky stuff. Shawn has tested out a lot of antique mousetraps made of metal. He of all people should know that well-made expensive metal trap will still hold up 100 years later.

@Milosz_Ostrow

Interesting idea, but it might work better with some electronic augmentation in the form of an optical beam that, when broken by a mouse venturing out on the roller, electromagnetically retracts a brake shoe, allowing the roller to spin freely for a second. The mice would thus feel quite secure while exploring for the bait, until they are too far from the edge of the bucket to save themselves by jumping back.

@JusBidniss
@JusBidniss 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Shawn, I agree the full roller is more efficient, but this half-roller gives me an idea. I wonder if one could be constructed to have a bit of slack around the 'axle' on the end, so that a magnet attached to the bait clip holds the roller up and steady, but the weight of the mouse as it approaches the bait drops the roller down a bit, disengaging it from the magnet and allowing it to spin. This would overcome the mouse's reluctance to go onto a moving roller, until it's too late.
@TheCarDemotic
@TheCarDemotic 4 жыл бұрын
So the roller bends when the mouse goes toward the end causing it to free spin and the mouse falls?

i wonder if you oil the rim of the bucket if that will not aid in some way. I see mice always try to hold on to it while trying to get to the bate. Maybe if the rim is slippery the mouse will lose its grip on the rim and fall into the bucket? The oil on the bottom really does help to keep the trapped mice from jumping. Lastly, how are you doing with the rats? They are really clever and it is really a problem to catch them. I see a lot of videos on people building "taser traps" but it looks more like a fire hazard then a solution. What working alternatives would you suggest?
