In this episode we learn about the Hall longarm used by both sides during the Civil War and sharpshooters. It is special in that it is a front-faced tip up breechloader - we will explain what that is! Developed by J.H. Hall it is also an example of the concept of interchangeable parts. Thank you to Mark Krausz and the rest of the team at Agents Campbell and Pelican’s Military Goods for bringing us this history to share.

Very informative video! The Hall breechloader is one of my favorite weapons to research as I continue to study about the United States Dragoons.

In the 90s I worked in Hollywood as a prop master and had the opportunity to visit Stembridge Guns which at the time was the main armory for the movie industry. I remember seeing dozens of original Halls rifles and carbines both flint and percussion. They were just crammed on a industrial shelf all together. They had an incredible gun collection. In the 2000s they sold off all the collection and I believe are out of business. What happened to all those Halls?

That's a great question! No doubt they probably ended up in some collections after being sold off for credit for financiers.

Well done. A fascinating weapon that was ahead of its time. I would have liked to hear more about the paper cartridge useage and process involving it. But time constraints obviously prevent going into every point. Nevertheless, another bully episode!

I have an 1862 Hall barrel assembly, but it's missing the stock and trigger assembly. Is there a site that deals in parts for these antique firearms? I'd sure like to restore it as much as possible.

Mark seems so enthusiastic, especially about that 16 groove rifling. Will there be more from Agents Campbell and Pelican?

Great video as always. When I watch some of your episodes, both Will and Jeremy, and I see that your both of your shirts have the distinctive "pull" from the collar to the armpits and was wondering if you could tell me where you got them, what material, or if you made them yourself, and other nomenclature.

I can’t speak for Jeremy, but when I am in period dress, my blue shirt is one I made myself. The white dress shirt is one I bought from the Sutler of Fort Scott. Will

Most of my shirts came from Wambaugh & White or Ross Lamoreaux. Most of what I have had on in episodes was probably from Ross. He doesn't have a store front and posts shirts for sale on various Facebook for sale groups.

I would have liked to hear something about the weapon's accuracy and firing rate, but good video nonetheless. Have you seen the weapon videos done by "The Great War" channel? They're too long, but I like some of the things they do, like showing how each weapon is loaded and firing at a target. I'd recommend adding those two things to your weaponry videos.

Thanks for the thought! It’s a good idea but these are also museum quality originals. They are too great of a value to shoot and, the way that action wore down, I wouldn’t want to be the one to pull the trigger! Too much chance of a gas leak in the face! We can work more on the “how loaded” part. Thank you!!!!

Awesome video! I have an 1833 Hall flintlock rifle, mine has three spring bands and the armory is North. Any thoughts on shooting this rifle? I’m researching how to shoot a Hall there are several good KZbin videos of Hall rifles being fired I find them totally amazing and will put up a video soon of my Hall being shot for the first time in most likely over 150 years. Thanks again for the great video 👍🏼

I would place an order for the missing parts from The Rifle Shoppe. There may be loose ones out there, but they seem to rarely ever come up for sale.
