** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
We have that rarity today of a really approachable and yet really elegant sudoku. It's called Arithmetic Quiz and it's a debut on the channel for mnasti2. The lovely thing about this puzzle is that you can really find some beautiful logic in it if you combine the sudoku side with the math(s). Enjoy.
You can try it at the link below:

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. (Place the digits 1-9 in each row, column and 3x3 box exactly once each). Each line must contain a true mathematical equation. (Two cell circles enclose 2-digit numbers; three cell circles enclose 3-digit numbers).

One of my least favorite things about sudokus is when there is a moment where you have to hunt out a specific box that is the bottleneck to making progress, and this one does a great job of letting you solve from many different directions. I started from the top and moved down but going from the bottom up clearly works equally well, and I just really like that about this one

Every now and then, when Simon is mostly done a puzzle, I think "Ok I can get it from here" and will try to solve the last bits on my own, but it's typically with almost all of the real break-in logic completed. This is the first time on the channel I felt confident I could get it right from the start and actually did so. What a wonderful puzzle.

As a mathematician watching this video: When I saw the 8th row I noticed it provided a lot of information on it's own so I was curious if one could solve the entire 8th row without gaining more information by starting with the other rows. Turns out, you can! :D Took me a little bit, but with some clever insights and some brute force at the end I found that there was only the 1 single solution that you would also get from solving the puzzle normally. If anyone wants to try to show this on their own you are highly encouraged as I had a lot of fun with it. If you are curious, here is how I did it: My main focus was trying to restrict the number of possibilities for the 2-digit number in the middle. Immediately you can notice that this number can't be a multiple of 11 (11, 22, 33,...) as we would otherwise have to use the same number twice, breaking sudoku rules. We can also notice that the number in the middle can't be one where the unit digit is exactly one less than the digit before it (e.g 21, 32, 43 ,54 ,65 ,76, ...). Those don't work because then the 2-digit number on the left of the equation would have to be more than 10 away from the number in the middle (for example when we have 54 in the middle, the 2-digit number on the left has it's maximum at 39, but 39 + a = 54 is never true if a < 10). The 2-digit number to the left also can't be higher than the one in the middle because we can only add to make them equal. Focusing our attention on the right side we can also see that primes are not a valid solution for the number in the middle as it can clearly be factorized into 2 factors. These factors are also never 1, because both factors are definitely less than 10 so if we assume that one of them is 1 we would have 1 times some 1-digit number being equal to a 2-digit number which can't happen. So primes are not a candidate for the 2-digit number in the middle. We can also rule out any non-primes that have a prime factorization with a 2-digit number (e.g.: 26, 51, ...) because one of our factors on the right would then have to be a 2-digit number, but they aren't. The highest number we can reach by multiplying 2 1-digit numbers is 56 = 7 * 8 = 7 * (9 - 1), because all other combiniations that would multiply to be higher run into some problem right away, like having to use an 8 or using 9 twice. So our 2-digit number in the middle has to be less than 56 as we also run into problems with 56, but it serves as a nice upper-bound. Lastly, we can't have any number from 11 - 19 as our 2-digit number in the middle as the other 2-digit number would then have to be at least 21, making this not work either. Doing all of that, we are only left with these numbers: 24, 25, 27, 28, 35, 36, 42, 45, 48, 49 "Only" I say, that's still so many 😭 Well, after getting to this point I could not find some clever trick to further reduce the number of possible numbers so I just brute forced it. After plugging these numbers in most of them fall apart very quickly (which I shall leave to you to verify cause I am too lazy to type out each case), but in the end they all fall apart except 24, which only produced 1 solution. Thus leaving us with the only solution being: 5 + 19 = 24 = 6 * (7 - 3) Thank you for reading this very nieche approach to a weird problem I created for myself

Btw, not sure if Simon noticed this in the video, but the 1 to 9 are arranged in serial order, it is how the questions in a math quiz might be arranged as Question 1, 2, 3, ... and so on and each row corresponds to one question of the quiz. It is a really lovely layout 🙂

Hadnt visited this channel in about a year, so pretty rusty in my sudokus, I was happy to get just short of double of simons time. Lovely!

What a well thought-out puzzle. Those long equations at the bottom look pretty wild at first, but once you uncover some of the digits in the upper rows, that eliminates all possible variations and suddenly an entire row of equation snaps into place.

Its great how this puzzle can be approached in different ways depending on your logic. The very first thing I solved was the first row and than worked my way down.

I usually prefer the long videos, but as a short one, this was really cool. I already knew you were good at math, Simon, but watching this showed me how much more basic math you just have memorized than I do. I would have to think a bit to find several numbers and solutions here, that you just instantly put down. Quite impressive and lovely solve!

I like both. The long ones are just amazing to watch and be amazed by his brilliance, but I like the shorter ones too, because I can try those puzzles myself. The only long puzzle I was able to solve was the chess sudoku, but usually I don't have any idea how to even start solving it

It was nice that you could solve it in so many different ways. I worked it starting out with the R1 column realizing it had to be 40 something x 2, then cascaded down finding what was possible in each equation (that was within reason) and it just simplified itself the further you went.

I felt good about that one roughly 40 min. The deductions around 5's,1's and prime's being eliminated from around multiplication/division stuff helped a lot. As did remembering there are no negative numbers in sudoku which forced the alignment of a few pairs. But I stared at a pencil marked grid for a lot longer than he did. I definitely went the long way around and leaned mostly on the math

Loved this puzzle! Still new to sudoku, so it took me nearly 50 minutes! I got the 4 in R1,C2 very early given the constraints in box 1, and that got me started at the top of the puzzle rather than the bottom. When I finally noticed the 7 vs 8 bit in row 9, that's when everything fell into place. Great setting, very relaxing solve.

27:52 was my time. I'm so used to puzzles on this channel where there's only one real path to solve it, and my solve looks very similar to Simon's. This is a refreshing change of pace - you can really start the solve on just about any of the individual equations.

REALLY enjoyed the first 99% of this puzzle. unfortunately then my brain took a holiday to australia or some such and I spent several minutes CONVINCED that 7x3 was 24, resulting in a deadly pattern in the row 8 sum and the end of row 5. I eventually asked a maths friend for help and they pointed out that 7x3 was 21, which was especially grating as I had been multiplying 21s to do the row 3 sum SIMULTANEOUSLY with trying to solve row 8, so. that kinda soured my on it at the last minute for something that was absolutely not your fault or mnasti2's. the puzzle was wonderful, I'd love more like it. the video was, as always, great. :)

Pretty fun! Got 26:41, interesting how quickly you could rule out a lot of combinations based on given digits and little rules in arithmetic (e.g. you can't have 5 multiplied with something because that gives you another 5 in the line or 0).

I would love it if each week the puzzles got gradually harder as the week goes on. So Mondays would always be easy puzzles and Sundays would be the hardest (more or less, it's not an exact science). It would help the audience know when they can expect a puzzle of about their level
