I am now old enough to know that life is really just a series of losses. From the moment we’re born until we take our last breath, we are constantly losing people all around us. Not just to death, but by abandonment, moving to other places, people dumping us, people outgrowing us, etc... Yes, life is really just a succession of loss after loss. Sad, but true.

Am 75 & have 5 pets. Rescues. Three cats & 2 house rabbits. One cat is 18 1/2, got from shelter last year. Charming old man. Got a 15 year old girl in March. Help local shelter. Worked til 72, RN. Lots of friends, social activities. Volunteer, go to the gym few days a week, help at church for parties. Husband passed 7 1/2 year ago. Will miss him til my last breath. We travel a lot both domestically & internationally. Travel occasionally. Not much fun without him. Downsized to small condo building in same area 6 years ago. Have help for some things. Like to clean & garden. Stay active. Get out & do something each day. Keep up with technology.

For what it's worth I'll offer this from my own experience. Sometimes the pet is in the way of a new relationship. I have met several ladies who are overly involved in small useless dogs. They are an emotional support, but they build a wall between the pet owner and potential new friends. in some cases special dietary food is prepared every day like for a baby the talk the emotion and the vicarious love given to the pet seems to lock in and there's no room for a new partner. I'm 81 and recently lost a cockatiel that was 31 years old, he was a constant companion. I have not replaced him and at this point I only have house plants for pets. I prefer people.

I’m an only child. I’m 69 years old. I’ve never had friends as a child it was hard and being sick didn’t help. But as I got older these things don’t bother me. When I retired I felt lost at first. But after a while I got back on track. I’m living with my daughter and her husband and my granddaughter after I had hip replacement surgery. I still get around I don’t feel alone or sad. Being the only child helped a lot I’m home while my daughter and son-in-law go to work. I enjoy my alone time with myself. Everyone is different no one is the same when you’re in the same situation.😊

I'm 77, reasonably fit, both mentally and physically. Don't drink (gave it up 3 years ago) or smoke (gave that up 50 years ago) but most of all, don't take medication of ANY kind. Married 55 years, wife not too well so I cook, clean, wash etc, no problem. Took up woodturning, cut myself today through carelessness, won't do that again !!! Read every day, (had a Kindle for years now, books a bit hard on my arthritis), don't watch TV at all or read newspapers. I agree that life is passing like an E Type Jag !!! So I'm aware I could fall off the perch tomorrow, the chap next door did, same age as me but being the pragmatic Yorkshireman I am (even though I've lived in west Australia for 50 years), it never occurs to me I might be next. I maintain a positive outlook at all times, today is great and tomorrow will be better, the glass is half full. Cheer up people, I got some brilliant advice years ago, 90% of whatever you're worrying about won't happen and the other 10% is going to happen whether you worry about it or not, so don't worry about it, deal with it.

I am 72, and here are some of my rules for coping: 1. Write a short list of your next activities, late in the evening or early in the morning. Throughout the day, before tackling anything new, know what you will be doing directly after that and have everything set up to do it. Then before starting that new thing, set up for the next. For example, before taking a nap I know exactly what I will do when I wake up. 2. Read autobiographies and biographies. This will give you a greater perspective of what it means to be human, to suffer, and to overcome. 3. Don't drink any alcohol, don't over-medicate, don't overeat. 4. Feel gratitude. Every bad thing comes with good things too if you look for them. 5. Give up trying to solve the world's problems. Don't tell anyone else what to do. Focus on your own business only. If someone is annoying, stay quiet and move on. Life is too short for other people's craziness. 6. Focus on the future, and not the past. However long you have left, you can still build a better you.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and cancer treatments have curtailed my past activities. I chose to accept things and alter my life style as I need to do so. Although now I’m much slower in daily rhythms, I just go with being more mindful of what I accomplish. I’ve prepare things which I will thank myself later. Having a deep faith keeps me grounded. Since walking is difficult, I safely do physiotherapy exercises while in my comfy chair during TV commercials or when waiting for a kettle to boil or stretch my arms while navigating through a doorway. Doesn’t have to be much just consistent. I remind myself to be grateful for what I can manage and coast along each day until something new crops up. And I do pamper myself with tools from my inner toolbox which help me cope. They don’t necessarily fix the problems but help me feel better and keep me going. Easy? No. But managable. Just keep going! 😊

I have a mountain cabin, I hunt, hike, fish, shoot, chop my own trees and firewood and I spend at least 3 days a week there. I’m 61. I retired at 52. I love it and I’m happily married, but I don’t mind spending time alone too. You’ve got to have hobbies. I definitely hurt a lot from arthritis but they always say that if you stop moving it gets worse, so I just keep at it. I take a nap most days too. That helps.

I am what today is called an elder orphan. I am in good health now, but fear tends to creep into my mind. Fear that I will end up in a nursing home. The dismal nature of that condition is obvious, but there is another aspect that is not obvious to young people, that I fear even more: if I am put into a nursing home, the state will seize all of my assets. I have designated my church as the beneficiary in my legal “will”, but state law regarding Medicare would over-ride my will in this situation. So my plan is when my health declines, hang on at home as long as I possibly can, and hopefully die there. Until then, I plan to live, not just exist. Go out with friends, listen to music, walk outside every day, etc. Whatever happens will happen. I suspect there are many people my age in my situation.

Well into my 70's I was still travelling with my little dog and loved planning for our trip to Mexico for 2 or 3 weeks each winter. Now that I've reached 80 plus, trip insurance is beyond my means and my little Percy is now 13, and the vet doesn't recommend that he travel. So instead of planning for the future I'm planning for the END. For 12 years Percy and I volunteered for St. John's Ambulance Therapy Dog Program. Unfortunately Percy developed Cushing's Syndrome, which affects his stress levels and he has lost his ability to comfort those that need it. So a large volunteer activity is also lost. I was an avid knitter and volunteered with a knitting group to make thing to sell in our local hospital gift shop. My fingers started cramp up and knitting became unbearable. Another volunteer activity and group lost. I find that throughout my life I've been able to cope with changes that each phase has brought, but hitting 80 has been has/is a real challenge that I'm not handling well.

Have seen the world thanks to the US Navy, held a good job for 40 years, visited every state but Texas, been blessed with good health, what few true friends I’ve had have all passed and I wouldn’t change a single thing even if I could. I’m not a religious person but I know God has had his hand on my shoulder for near 91 years. Ignore the ones that criticize the elderly and live your own life as best you are able.

As I get older, I find myself not associating with old friends as much as when I was younger. We all have families, now and they take up leisure time. I am not complaining just explaining. I am also not as flexible and mobile as I used to be. I used to be more athletic. Golf and racquetball were my favorites. My wife and I travel more when we have time. Our kids also used to take up a lot of our leisure time but not as much anymore.

I'm truly sorry you're feeling this way. Aging can be tough, but that doesn't mean you lose your worth or dignity. Surround yourself with love, and consider speaking with someone you trust. There are many ways to rediscover joy and purpose in every stage of life, if you're open to it. You’ve made it this far, and your journey still matters. Wishing you peace and strength!!. 🌸

I'm finding great positives and some great negatives with aging. For instance I now have more money in the bank than I've ever had, own my own single family detached home and own many valuable collectibles, including a vintage car .And my doctor gave me the big okay for driving. On the negative side, I feet cut off and separated from all my relatives due, I believe. But I don't want to depress everyone with my story.

I'm 77 in fairly good health except for some arthritis and back and leg pain. I have few friends and a hobby. But financially is very thin though I am trying to get it under control. Traveling is out of the question both financially and physically. I try to walk as much as possible and when the weather is nice to meet other people to talk although too many people in my age group like to talk about the bad parts instead of what is good in their lives. Beings all of my immediate family has passed away and never had children it can be lonely at times. I have tried keeping a positive attitude in my life. My parents who never had nothing, never had a car or owned a house did in still me to never ever give up. No matter what life has for me I will never give up!!

as we age we effortlessly build a time machine inside our memories and histories. we can travel from our earliest moments to the present minute - quietly inside our head - it's inspiring to travel 76 years in seconds jumping what 'Data' (ref picard) might refer to as a time-space continuum. so when someone sez "that old man just stares into space!" you realize that space is pleasantly occupied.

Getting old is like the Sword of Damocles hanging over your head, waiting for the next horrible health issue (or death) to hit you. No wonder old men are grumpy; you wake up in the morning feeling like you have been run over by a truck. You go to the bathroom and you can't piss. Sex only means gender. Old friends move away or die. Yeah, you don't need a shrink to find out why you are depressed lol. All you can do is make the best of it and observe this crazy world with each new day.

As a fact, it is the loose of you close friends and family. As you parents, aunts and uncles, close friends ( let alone your spouse) leave us you will find all your memories, good and bad, seem like they never happened because you have no one to recharge them with.

I am almost 70 and since retirement, I have been visiting countries including South East Asia for the past 5 years. I am slowing down now and for a year or so, I been living comfortably in a subarb in Thailand. Since I am divorced, I date beautiful girls frequently and that joy of meeting young ladies has made me feel young again. I cook at home and I never miss my 7 miles daily walk. My 4 kids are grown up and I am ok if they don't communicate with me that often. I never did drugs and do not drink or smoke. Everyone is different but in my view one must remain pragmatic and accept the reality of life. we are born and will die like everything else. Change in every aspect of life as we age is imminent and one must be open to adapt accordingly. I wake-up at 5 am, eat break fast, take shower and get out on my daily walk. I return home by 2 pm and feel ready to watch KZbin, Netflix, tiktok and specially stand-up comedies. It's a great routine when I think about the alternatives.

Youth is so misleading.Youare overcome by the feeing of immortality. However, age tells you otherwise. But all is not lost.. One can make even old age tolerable, if one makes the effort. It's not easy but can be done . I'm going turn 70 and i still have the zeal for living .By accepting the situation, keeping one's interests alive, one can be reasonably happy. One can't ask for more ,can one?. .My interest in gardening, reading, love for music and dance have rescued me from degeneration.Make peace with life and life will be kind to you, i hope.

None of this applies to me as a man in his 60s. I retired at 53 and really never have looked back. My life is what I make of it, no one tells me what to do nor do I have any obligations I wish i didn’t. If I am being honest with myself there is nothing I regret or miss. I live in the present but respect the past. I have friends and family in my life, plenty of female companionship and enough money to live how I want. I live overseas and that really helped me change my life and force me to avoid all the pitfalls most people worry about. I suppose the only thing is I am not taken as seriously with younger people than I thought I would. But I counter that with the wisdom that comes with aging. These issues mentioned in the video, i don’t see it 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have no interest in understanding or being in touch with the youth of today. I lived most of my dreams beginning at 42 when I began to engage in my lifelong desires. I became a professional pilot and flight instructor. I also became an aerobatic pilot. I was always good at sports. I am a professional guitarist and spent many years backing up female vocalists. I had many other adventures too numerous to mention here. Now at 82 I still play the guitar. No more sports and more flying. The only thing I live for is to take care of my wife who is in the beginning stages of dementia. She needs me and I intend to carry out my wedding vows. I have already accepted the inevitable fate of death. It does not bother me in the least, it seems like a nice long nap.

I took care of my wife as she died of cancer. She is the only person I have seen die. I am thankful that I was retired and in pretty good health and able to be there for her. I am 70 but look about 20 years younger. I accept that I probably won’t get to die at home like she did. And, I accept that I won’t have the love of my life to care for me as I die as she did. But, I try to enjoy each day and have a very good relationship with our son and his family. I lived alone for 11 years before I married. I know how to be alone now. I am not despondent.
