The Harley Tech Q&A 2 is here! This week I answer some common Harley Davidson questions that I get. Most notably, where to find parts, swapping engines from different year models, why handlebars move, and warranty warranty warranty. Ok, to be fair, I don't answer much about warranty for HD. I do talk about how it works, and why I won't insert myself into the internet commotion on HD's warranty situations. As always, thanks for watching!!!!

I get so jealous watching your videos. I've been a professional auto mechanic for over 33 years and every day I'm reminded that Harley techs get to ride all kinds of Harleys for test drives and I get to drive (as well as lay in floorboards of) cars and minivans for soccer moms with diaper bag smells, dead food trash all over, and trash in general. I've got about ten years until I can retire and then I'm not working on anything but bikes and my own vehicles. For you guys thinking about going into the technician field...work on bikes for guys who take pride in them rather than cars and mini vans for women who are too lazy to throw their trash away!

John, Great channel! I watched about 3 of your videos and decided I had to subscribe and ring that notifications bell. Thank YOU for all the great information and thanks also to CHATTAHOOCHEE HD for letting you do this at work. Have you considered giving the cost of some of the work you do at work. You said your labor rate in one of your earlier videos is $85/hr but how about items like the brake flush you did. I know not all jobs will be the same but I know a lot of people won't bring their bikes in for needed repairs or service because of the fear of the cost without even having any idea what it may cost to begin with. Anyways, Thank you for your advice and shared knowledge. Good job on the videos. Keep 'em coming!

Don't recall if I asked you. I'm curious about what ride by wire is vs standard controls
@452Rob
@452Rob 6 жыл бұрын
Ride by wire/drive by wire is simply a lack of manual throttle cable. Instead, the throttle is basically a potentiometer (like a volume knob on a sterio) and the computer interprets the signal and then controls an electrictronic actuated throttle plate motor for the throttle response...hense drive by "wire."

In your opinion. Is the syn3 better then amsoil.20w50..??? Which would you prefer in 2016 103. I ride hard at times..meaning I hit throttle and bang through the gears fast..and usually I'm in the 2400 rpm and sometimes 3k zone

For the question about the handlebars coming loose on the Road King..... Had the same problem on my Dyna. The fix was urethane bushings in the risers. It helped to dissipate the vibration. Oh! And some blue loctite.

I have a 2008 flhtc. Went on a ride the other day down a rough highway and felt like my rear wheel bottomed out a couple times. When I got home my red security key was on and my right turn signal and brake light didn't work. Checked every wire (except under the fender) and found nothing. Could the tire have chewed up the wires running under the fender? Does the wheel travel enough to get to the wires? Is this common?

Do more videos of working on sportster most guys that buy the touring bikes can afford to pay to have them worked on I have a 2012 sportster forty eight I have a service manual that I use to work on it cause there is no way I can afford to pay dealership prices. They charge 250$ for motor and primary oil change so I'm sure anything else gets way more expensive

Good advice in the bars John. Brand new bars and within 2 weeks, the bars pulled down. When I put my digital torque wrench, they were barely at 10ftlbs. And this was a H-D shop that did the job. I’ll probably pull out the riser bolts and relocktite them.

Great tip on the screen repair kit for handlebars. I have always used drywall sanding screen (basically the same stuff without adhesive) under my old Triumph's clamshell handlebar controls, especially the throttle side, holds it tight. I will have to try the screen kit, the adhesive would make it a lot easier to install.

Love the channel great content the only thing I see or think and it goes fore all of the motor company's if a person buys or bought a bike new 20 yrs ago and brings it in to get worked on oviously he loves his ride and the motor company should work on it or direct the dealer to do something eventually it would discourage the customer from buying something else or talk about it to others and so on if that makes sense

I have a 2017 sportster 48 about 2000mi. while driving on any straight road above 30 mph I could see that the front tire is pitched to the right. I can see it in the forks and the handle bars. You make Harley look good. Keep it up. They are getting to be known as a greedy arrogant bunch. As for my 2010 road glide custom, only changed the ratcheting chain tensioner, added a SE stage 1 kit and dropped the idle to 800. Its been bullet proof. The guts look almost exactly like my 1980 tour glide. Product ain't as bad as some people claim. I would suggest to the MOCO invest in a bit more R&D and IIWDFI. if it works dont fix it.

Hey John, I've got an 05 Ultra. A few years ago when I was getting it out my factory bars pulled back. I thought for a long time about how I should safely fix it. I came up with drywall sanding screen. I got the bars set back where I wanted them took off one clamp, cut a strip of screen and clamped it down. Repeated for the other side. Glad to see I didn't come up with a hokie fix.

Is it bad to hit high rpm on big twin motors? Mine has big bore kit, s&s cams and a screaming eagle 6200 rev limiter. I've hit the rev limit once and was told going high rpm with the big twin and mods I have is going to grenade the motor. I ride my bike pretty easy never even go above 75mph cruising down the highway. Shifting around 3500rpm. If it matters she has 34,000 miles and is an 00 road king flhr.

Hey John, great vid as usual. So I purchased my first Harley a 2008 sportster 1200 low last year with 3000 miles on it. I currently have a little over 7000. I'm still getting familiar With the maintenance as it is a a little different than the metric bikes I've ridden for many years. So my question is at this mileage what should I be looking to tighten or replace Or just be concerned about. For instance I believe my tires are the original tires, should I replace them? They still have a good amount of tread left. Any input would be great. Thanks for your fantastic vids. Oh the bike is completely stock except for a kn filter aftermarket front controls and a vance and hines fp3

Great video man! Hey I got a question for ya, I'm new to Harleys, I just got a '96 Sporty with the Evo engine. In your video about your Bad Boy, you briefly touched on an issue you had with the clutch getting too hot I think, saying it was a common issue with a few years of the Evo's, including mine. I haven't found any literature on that yet, what were ya talking about?

Hey John, love your videos. I just bought a 2019 street glide special and I'm wondering if the high flow screaming eagle exhaust will complicate my factory warranty. I currently have SE slipons and would love the head pipe as well.

I hate the position of my clutch friction zone on my 2018 limited. Dealer said they cannot adjust because it's hydraulic. It has to be released 95% before friction. Is it true I just need to deal with it?

2015 street glide SP with 22,000 and I just replaced my shifter shaft since it left me stranded on the rode side twice and the second time I was about 90 miles from but luckily close to a harbor freight so I bought some cheap tools and fixed it in the parking lot. My local dealer said its just a poor design and that he sold 21 of them this year.

Whats your expert advice on motor break in? I've never done the text book break in for any vehicle i have ever owned. Every vehicle I've purchased new, I just rip it.

I noticed you pulled the complete fairing to change the bars is that the best way a lot of videos on youtube show people not removing the inner fairing they jockey it back and forward

talking rock I'm sure he removes the inner fairing on customers bikes for less chance of scratching them. Plus I'm sure that HD has the figured in on their rate

Apparently this one snuck past me. I remove the fairing so as not to scratch it for sure! It might take me 5 extra minutes to take one off and put it back on again. I have practiced it a few times, haha.

Do you find that the dealerships you work at or have worked at hire techs who haven't passed DSO and have their tech rec? Also what was the more challenging project in DSO 1?

What’s up John. On an 18 StreetBob, what is the rear fork spacer bolt? I’m looking at the service guide. Is that the main nut and bolt on the rear fork?
