I really like this video. I like how you are stressing the idea of not trying to bite off the whole fretboard in one chunk. It really works if you try it and just get past that uncomfortable phase for your brain telling you to move all up and down the neck. These mix of scales are a lot of fun too! TY

This is cool.This is going right for the secret Yngwie scale, what I like to call "Fake Dorian" which is a combination of several scale options overlapped and visualized over each other. One of the scales would be ,mode vi of G Melodic Minor, E Aeolean b5,(a.ka. Locrian natural 2) WITH position #1, E minor Blues at 12 fret . THEN a whole step down to 10th fret D harmonic minor Be-bop. (add the b7 as well as major 7.) The Diminished ladder can be E 1/2 Whole Diminished, and I will stop there ...lol

I remember playing that shape at 4:00 when i was a teenager and thinking I had discovered a cool new sound, only to have my bass teacher tell me it was harmonic minor scale and destroy my hopes and dreams :-)
@hankgutter8669 Жыл бұрын
why feel that way if you discovered that principle for yourself? You were merely told the name of that concept..that has happened to me too..all good bro..run with it...i do some prog outside playing..just to get away from Pentatonic playing idioms..because i'm essentially into blues..but love playing modal stuff too..and...i would be lost describing much of it in technical terms..but my ears decide if it's cool and appropriate or not

The "SHAPE" is D Harmonic Minor, yes, but...B minor over E is Dorian sound the E Dorian sound is not really harmonic minor . you can use the B harmonic minor Bebop( b7 natural 7)shape and get some improv patterns out of D MELODIC MINOR the second mode of Melodic Minor is E Dorian b2 the E minor pentatonic fits the E Dorian b2 like a glove, according to" the frank gambale technique book " the Dorian b2 is also know as phrgian natural 6. that is how Guitar Master is getting D harmonic minor shape . Mode vi of G Melodic Minor is Locrian natural 2 it has the same diminished ladder as Dorian. you could create a blues improv pattern with that because you could get the natural 6 from E half whole diminished .but mode 2 of D Melodic Minor has a natural 6 this is like Horn harmony kind of thinking

I love all your tricks and tips I've been playing for years but cant get close to your skills What I find difficult is picking techniques their seems to be so many options What is best Alternate sweep economy hybrid fingerpick thumbpick and how on earth do you master them all ? Just thought I'd put that out there to everyone really What are you all practicing?

the "Position #3 E Pentatonic Minor Blues Scale" has a b9 as well. Position #3 OVER Position #1 interchanged at 12 fret. if the Major 3 is added to Position #3 minor pentatonic blues then it is Dominant and could spring board into the mixolydian , which Is NOT the point of this video.The goal is to get a Dorian sound primarily with some diminished added, and the blue notes b5 and b9 Further more it is important to be careful with the major 3 , because Dorian and mixo are so closely related. They both have b7 but Mixo has a major 3ed and the Dorian, a minor 3ed

What kind of progressions would this melding of E blues and D harmonic minor work well over, E minor or D minor tonalities, or both?
@GuitarMan652 жыл бұрын
Try it on the V7 of of D-.
@johnmcminn94552 жыл бұрын
any where your going for a Dorian/Mixolydian sound, but want to sound more suspended than Dominant .To more clearly hear the difference play major pentatonic blues over E then play an E Dominant arpeggio then play position #3 pentatonic with the blue note (f) and position #1 pentatonic with the b5 blue note (Bb) inter change those combinations being careful with the major 3ed . if you add the major 3ed it will sound Dominant, if you DON'T add it then you want to play some interesting minor sounds like the Guitar Master here is showing us . interchanging the position #1 and position #3 pentatonic blues are the spring board to the other sounds . another way to look at an E7 (V7) is as a I7 the major scale . if you look at the 7th chord of the major scale you have Eb 7b5 which is " Half diminished " you play Eb half whole diminished which is symmetrical 1/2 step Whole step etc. move that up a half step and you have E Whole Half Diminished . Add the notes of Whole Half Diminished to the E major scale and you get 11 notes . if you make pentatonic scales out of those 11 notes you will have Position #1 pentatonic minor Blues and ALSO Major pentatonic blues . that is ONLY one way to look at a V7 chord .
@SONICBOOMERSOONER2 жыл бұрын
@@johnmcminn9455 That's quite an insight! If we're in E then penta-blues position 3 with F as the blue note is just B blues, which fits the V chord perfectly so we can sprinkle that in. So really what he's showing us is that if we throw in the Db on a E blues we're implying D harmonic minor briefly and it opens up these killer shred licks.
@johnmcminn94552 жыл бұрын
@@SONICBOOMERSOONER yes this is kind of a nice blend. the interesting thing about position 1 E minor pentatonic Blues with B natural minor scale, is the Position #1 minor 5 note shape can be used with several scales if you play #3 position E minor pentatonic alone with B natural minor, it sounds kind of bland because it outlines Dorian with out any minor tension. Position 3 and B natural minor sounds best blended with position #1 where you get the minor 3ed and b5 tension . take a good listen to Zakk play Zz Top Tush you can hear some times he is following chords with just " blue notes" and wha pedal .
@SONICBOOMERSOONER2 жыл бұрын
@@johnmcminn9455 It's confusing when you talk about positions without root notes. For example, all positions of E pentatonic have the same notes, so why would there be a special rub somewhere? Are you saying that a certain place on the guitar places the intervals in a more interesting way between E blues and B minor scales?
