I love that Voldemorts name is his own name rearranged. Because that absolutely means he sat there coming up with multiple stupid combinations first, and that's hilarious. Immortal Love Rodd. If we’re also talking about how great the casting is in these movies you cannot overlook Maggie Smith as McGonagall, there is no one and I repeat NO ONE that could’ve played a better McGonagall than Maggie. Her demeanor, the way she curls her lip in disapproval, her small quirks, her love for both magic and the school, her caring for Harry, it’s portrayed absolutely perfectly EDIT: RIP Dame Maggie Smith 1934 - 2024

This is so true!! And I’m still not over the fact Harry the fan boy didn’t name one of his kids after her. Like she was basically a mother figure to him. She got him his first broom, was always looking out for him, showed genuine care for him. And it really sucks that Harry didn’t acknowledge that.

Chris Columbus was the only director who made the correct calls on casting and even got everyone to look as close as possible as the book descriptions as well. All the other directors screwed up on that account (neither Sirius or Bellatrix look like their book counterparts and don't even look related, never mind Narcissa and her skunk hair and HBC was way too over the top with Bellatrix).

The reason Voldemort could touch Harry in the goblet of fire and not be hurt by that “love magic” is because he was resurrected with Harry’s blood that Wormtail took with the knife, adding it to that cauldron. #2. Fun (?) Fact: The reason that Crabbe is not in the final film and was completely replaced by a different actor and character (Blaise Zabini, another Slytherin), is because the actor that plays Crabbe that did the cameo in this video (Jamie Waylett) was actually fired from the role after being convicted for growing marijuana in his family's house, possession of a knife, and later that same year he was arrested and found guilty of violent disorder during the London Riots. He was pictured "holding a petrol bomb" and "swigging from a stolen bottle of champagne" and ultimately received a two year sentence for violent disorder and 12 months for handling stolen goods. There’s a explaination as to why Dumbledore dropped Harry off at the dursleys despite them knowing that they”ll probably treat him horribly. In the books it’s explained that Lily’s Protection that managed to save Harry extends to Petuinia due to their blood relation. This is important cause in goblet of fire when Voldemort rebirths using Harry’s blood, The protection Harry has on HIM becomes useless so the house or wherever petunia is, acts like the only other layer of Protection Harry has (until he’s 17 anyways)

Ron’s problems in the movies are mostly faults made by the directors. In the books his relationship with Hermoine was a lot better and he was a lot smarter and braver. Some things in the books that he said were given to hermoine as well, like he knew about the Devil’s snare in the first movie, he gave the exposition on what a mudblood is in the book because hermoine was actually confused by it and didn’t know what it meant, and he said “if you want to kill Harry, you’ll have to kill us!” In the prisoner of askaban book.

@@Nepheos I've always wanted to write a "what if" fanfic where Voldemort kills Harry in the haunted forest, wins the 2nd Wizarding War, tries to take the Death Eaters global, and we get a post-apocolypes style story with Voldemort realizing that Protego might not help against bunker busters. Hermione decides to help the various muggle governments to train them against magic users, and helps identify and protect innocents. So we get crack teams of highly trained soldiers who know how to fight magic. We could hear the scream of "Avada Kedevra!" and the scream of gunfire in the same fight.

1:17:00 - The whole "why did they have a members list" segment. I don't remember if they touched on it in the movie, but the reason the list exists is because Hermione cursed the *shit* out of it, so anyone who signs up to be a member of the D.A. can't betray the others without consequence. I can't remember exactly what she did to it, tho- I think it was cursed to make a traitor break out in boils spelling out the word "SNEAK"? It was all very scarlet letter of her. Also- to answer any "Why didn't Voldemort" question or point you bring up- It is 100% canon that Voldemort is dramatic as fuck and doesn't do shit unless it has specific meaning to him. Would it be safer to turn a grain of sand into a horcrux and toss it onto a beach? 100%. But its not *nearly* as angsty, edgy, or cool as sticking it in a cursed locket in a cave from his childhood. This is LITTERALLY the only reason Voldemort can be beaten- he's too fucking dramatic for his own good.

Since his aunt was related to his mother, it was strongest when he was with her, that's why dumbledore sends him to live with the Dursleys. To protect him. Thank you! At 1:07:23 I've been waiting so long for someone to mention this. They could have taken less than a minute of screen time to explain this "rule" the way they did in the books. I believe it's in Book 5 one of the professors tells the students that up until this year they've been taught to say the spell out loud to get the desired result from their wand. But once the connection between wand and wizard/witch becomes more or less fixed, you only have to "think" the spell and your wand will perform the rest. This is why none of the adult characters need to speak their spells. The only reason a spell is spoken out loud in the films is so the audience can understand what is supposed to happen. But it makes sense for more experienced wizards/witches to simply do the spell without the fanfare.

I'd argue the films are pretty mixed cinematographically. The first two by Chris Columbus are wholesome and cute. They're not amazing, but they do what they need to do very well. The third one by Alfonso Cuaron is actually really pretty. it's easily the best looking film of the lot. The fourth one by Mike Newell is pretty whatever. It's pretty boring visually, but it isn't plagued by the dark greens of the later movies. The final four by David Yates are really mediocre. I don't like how any of them look or are paced. I think some of the editing choices in these movies are genuinely baffling. Someone needs to hire a new Colorist and teach them that black, dark blue, and dark green aren't the only colours. I do agree with you on casting though. Even when the main three struggle at times, I think most of the actors do a pretty solid job save some side characters.

I’ve read Umbridge’s origin story, in short, her mom was a muggle, her dad was a wizard and her brother never got any magic. Her parents got divorced and the mother took her non-magical son away; Umbridge has hated both her mom and her brother for the longest time for not possessing magical abilities so when they were gone she was thriving. Her dad on the other hand wasn’t doing so good. In fact after the divorce he was laid off and then became a cleaning man at the ministry. Umbridge was so disgusted with her dad and after she got hired at the ministry and people started making associations she paid her dad to denounce her and she lied that she was a pure blood instead.

I thought Lockhart was the teacher because Dumbledore literally couldn't find anyone else for the job. It isn't really gone into in the books, but I could totally see Lockhart basically volunteering for the job because he's boasting about how great he is. He habitually gets himself in over his head because of his boasting. And Dumbledore isn't an all-knowing character. He has flaws too. This could've just been an oversight on his part. I don't see him purposefully putting a bad teacher into place. He might only have known about Lockhart by reputation.

I'm bilingual and sometimes forget certain words in my first language but remember them in my second. When I'm talking with my family, who have no idea of English, I have to be careful and consciously remember, that they wouldn't understand what I say. To my brain it's just another set of words, not another language. Harry probably saw it like that as well, but at least I know it's a different language - he didn't figure that out yet. For him it could have been a dialect of English or whatever, just, a thing he knew how to do since childhood and never really named, so there was no border between English and parseltongue for him.

But the weird thing is that in the books it’s said that you can’t LEARN to speak parseltongue, like it’s something you’re either born with the ability of knowing or you don’t. Harry himself is only able to speak it due to him being a horcrux, he even loses the ability to speak parseltongue once he’s no longer a horcrux. Dumbledore is fond of muggle candy. we see in the past that hagrid doesn't think that aragog is dangerous. there is a big reward at the end of the tournament. the draw for ron would be more of the money, since his family isn't the best financially the merpeople aren't supposed to be deadly. they actually are willing participants, who tell the judges when each competitor get there for the cruciatus curse, you have to mean it.

Harry asked about this specifically as to why Voldemort wont make a horcrux out of an old can or something. And Dumbledore said that in theory he could, but that he wont for very sentimental reasons. Voldemort was a trophy-hunter, so he made horcruxes out of things that are very valuable to him personally (diary, snake), or have massive value as a magical item (he made a horcrux out of one of the deathly hallows). obviously he could have ensured his immortality by creating one horcrux being literally unfindable, but he thought of himself as the most proficient wizard of all times and didnt really think anybody would even know that horcruxes existed, let alone know what they are, where they are, and beat all the traps. so why split his soul and put it into a rock, when in his mind, there was 0 % chance anyone would destroy his horcruxes anyway? this is a sort of Sauron situation. why didnt he have guard by the volcano? well, in his mind, he never imagined anyone would try to destroy the ring. he thought that anyone would just use the ring to gain more power. this was his weakness and ultimately his undoing. just like Voldy's

I feel like a lot of your questions can be answered with "the books explained it better." The problem of converting novels into movies is that you go from a medium that can afford to explain it to you at a leisurely pace, to one that has to cram everything into a two hour time limit. Things get cut out, and when dealing with the fantasy genre like this a level of suspending your disbelief is somewhat mandatory.

hands down, the third one is the best. it has so many moments that i think back on artistically that stand out, and we're even started in that movie because of the director

They visit Mr. Weasley in St. Mungo's hospital after he is attacked by Nagini in the Order of the Phoenix, and they run into Neville and his grandma while they're there. It's a very sad scene, but it's also sweet how Neville cares for his parents. He's not embarrassed by them, but he doesn't want other people to laugh at them or anything. He's being protective.

Most of your complaints could be answered with “But, you know, in the books…” Of course, a movie has to explain these things, you shouldn’t need to read the books to get stuff from the movie

1:18:11 in the book, Harry uses the killing curse on Belatrix, but she isn’t harmed at all, it’s explained that he “isn’t hateful enough for it to kill anyone”, which is a whole new can of worms.

I swear I wake up in a cold sweat once a year imagining what the fuck the audience was looking at during the tournament. It's even WORSE in the movies because Harry and the dragon just leave in the ONE event they would have been able to see.
