If we’re also talking about how great the casting is in these movies you cannot overlook Maggie Smith as McGonagall, there is no one and I repeat NO ONE that could’ve played a better McGonagall than Maggie. Her demeanor, the way she curls her lip in disapproval, her small quirks, her love for both magic and the school, her caring for Harry, it’s portrayed absolutely perfectly EDIT: RIP Dame Maggie Smith 1934 - 2024

Fun (?) Fact: The reason that Crabbe is not in the final film and was completely replaced by a different actor and character (Blaise Zabini, another Slytherin), is because the actor that plays Crabbe that did the cameo in this video (Jamie Waylett) was actually fired from the role after being convicted for growing marijuana in his family's house, possession of a knife, and later that same year he was arrested and found guilty of violent disorder during the London Riots. He was pictured "holding a petrol bomb" and "swigging from a stolen bottle of champagne" and ultimately received a two year sentence for violent disorder and 12 months for handling stolen goods. There’s a explaination as to why Dumbledore dropped Harry off at the dursleys despite them knowing that they”ll probably treat him horribly. In the books it’s explained that Lily’s Protection that managed to save Harry extends to Petuinia due to their blood relation. This is important cause in goblet of fire when Voldemort rebirths using Harry’s blood, The protection Harry has on HIM becomes useless so the house or wherever petunia is, acts like the only other layer of Protection Harry has (until he’s 17 anyways)

Some things in the books that he said were given to hermoine as well, like he knew about the Devil’s snare in the first movie, he gave the exposition on what a mudblood is in the book because hermoine was actually confused by it and didn’t know what it meant, and he said “if you want to kill Harry, you’ll have to kill us!” In the prisoner of askaban book.

1:17:00 - The whole "why did they have a members list" segment. I don't remember if they touched on it in the movie, but the reason the list exists is because Hermione cursed the *shit* out of it, so anyone who signs up to be a member of the D.A. can't betray the others without consequence. I can't remember exactly what she did to it, tho- I think it was cursed to make a traitor break out in boils spelling out the word "SNEAK"? It was all very scarlet letter of her. Also- to answer any "Why didn't Voldemort" question or point you bring up- It is 100% canon that Voldemort is dramatic as fuck and doesn't do shit unless it has specific meaning to him. Would it be safer to turn a grain of sand into a horcrux and toss it onto a beach? 100%. But its not *nearly* as angsty, edgy, or cool as sticking it in a cursed locket in a cave from his childhood. It's explained at the end of the books that his mum sacrificing herself to save him left basically a ward of protection on him, that would remain until 18. Since his aunt was related to his mother, it was strongest when he was with her, that's why dumbledore sends him to live with the Dursleys. To protect him. Voldemort is able to touch harry from the 4th movie onwards because they put Harry's blood into Voldemort himself, so that the barrier no longer protects him from him.

Thank you! At 1:07:23 I've been waiting so long for someone to mention this. They could have taken less than a minute of screen time to explain this "rule" the way they did in the books. I believe it's in Book 5 one of the professors tells the students that up until this year they've been taught to say the spell out loud to get the desired result from their wand. But once the connection between wand and wizard/witch becomes more or less fixed, you only have to "think" the spell and your wand will perform the rest. This is why none of the adult characters need to speak their spells. The only reason a spell is spoken out loud in the films is so the audience can understand what is supposed to happen. But it makes sense for more experienced wizards/witches to simply do the spell without the fanfare.

It's pretty boring visually, but it isn't plagued by the dark greens of the later movies. The final four by David Yates are really mediocre. I don't like how any of them look or are paced. I think some of the editing choices in these movies are genuinely baffling. Someone needs to hire a new Colorist and teach them that black, dark blue, and dark green aren't the only colours. actually, harry didn't give fred and george his own money, but it was the prize money that he won after the goblet of fire. harry didn't want it, so he gave it to the twins so they could start up their business. this happened at the end of the fourth book, and the twins had already bought the shop during the events of the fifth one. with ron and hermione ending up together: their relationship is way better in the books. the movies pretty much dumbed down ron's character and most of the smart things he came up with were given to hermione, as to make her seem like the smarter one. they genuinely have a really good relationship, the movies were just awful at depicting it.

Harry asked about this specifically as to why Voldemort wont make a horcrux out of an old can or something. And Dumbledore said that in theory he could, but that he wont for very sentimental reasons. Voldemort was a trophy-hunter, so he made horcruxes out of things that are very valuable to him personally (diary, snake), or have massive value as a magical item (he made a horcrux out of one of the deathly hallows). obviously he could have ensured his immortality by creating one horcrux being literally unfindable, but he thought of himself as the most proficient wizard of all times and didnt really think anybody would even know that horcruxes existed, let alone know what they are, where they are, and beat all the traps. so why split his soul and put it into a rock, when in his mind, there was 0 % chance anyone would destroy his horcruxes anyway? this is a sort of Sauron situation. why didnt he have guard by the volcano? well, in his mind, he never imagined anyone would try to destroy the ring. he thought that anyone would just use the ring to gain more power. this was his weakness and ultimately his undoing. just like Voldy's

For anyone wondering, Viktor Krum didn’t have his mind warped by the maze, it’s poorly communicated in the film but in the book we learn that Barty Crouch Jr, disguised as Mad-Eye Moody, used the Imperius curse on Krum. Him and book Hermione have more chemistry than her and the blank page that is book Harry. The problem of converting novels into movies is that you go from a medium that can afford to explain it to you at a leisurely pace, to one that has to cram everything into a two hour time limit.
