I've tracking a 2.5 swapped NC1 since 2021 Got the car for $4k, didn't have my own space to work on it when the original 2.0 spun a bearing so I paid a local shop $5k to slap a 2.5 in and there's been zero issues with the powertrain (engine, trans and diff) since the swap roughly I'm only $15k deep that includes suspension, bushings, rollbar/harness bar, and burning through 3 new sets of tires for the car

I know people that do the same. I believe their comment about reliability is based on competitive Motorsports use. If you're not competing, I think this swap is a complete waste of money compared to the 2.5 duratec swap. I really don't understand why k power even developed this swap and I think they won't put the money into refining it, because the demand will be low. 15-20k vs 3k is a non starter for most people.

The one point I'd make against your last idea of looking at C5s or E92s is consumables. I used to occasionally track a C6 back in the day and the price for replacing brakes and ESPECIALLY tires was one of the biggest limitations to tracking more often. Miatas, 86s are so much cheaper on those items.

I commend you guys for always doing such quality work and not just throwing parts together without thinking of your builds as a complete package. Thats what's missing from 99% of the car youtube content that out there right now. Total respect to this build and thank you for explaining your thought process behind the K24 route when compared to the other options. In my mind it is 100% worth it if you are tracking the car and car more about sensation, throttle response, feel, and reliability and aren't just looking at dyno numbers. Man, what better option is there than the k24 for a track build motor right now? Pair that with one of the lightest, cheapest, best handling chassis out there (that is still modern-ish) and this is an incredible option for guys looking to do some serious track work. Looking forward to many more videos with this car guys!

I found a hidden track car gem a while back: I picked up an E82 2008 BMW 128i 6MT w/sport package for $4700. With a junkyard 3-stage intake manifold, OEM Euro intake & a tune the car put down an extra 27whp & 32wtq over stock in a car that only weighs a touch over 3000 lbs with a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. The N52 is reliable as an anvil and replacements are only about $1000. It’s a car that’s been doing very well in a few time attack classes that a lot of people overlook.

I've had a k24 as a daily for a long time and while the motor is nice, it's not $12k nice. Especially just to get started, because let's be real, you're that far into it, why wouldn't you put a set of cams in the k24 along with whatever else you want to throw at it. It's what you would do to a 2.5 as well.

Good breakdown. I'm currently stuck between turbo charging my NB or replacing the motor with a K24A. Main issue is that I'm running a 1.6, there just seems to be more support for the 1.8 when it comes to driveline so I'm hesitent. An off the shelf turbo kit in the UK runs about 3.5k-4k. A JDM K24 can be had for about £1k and then the swap kit from KPower you have already went over. So it's 4k-5k turbo charge (room for unknowns) or £10-11k for a K swap.

yep this is a great combo. $40k honestly is a good value for what you get here in term of specs and build quality

Can't forget 2015-2017 mustang GTs. No need for extra power, just needs tires and minor suspension work, especially if you get a performance package car

The 2.5 has the same torque as hp and is incredibly reliable in stock form. It's not that hard to bolt up a turbo and make mid twos and have so much fun. The 2.5 is essentially the same motor that was in the 2.3 mazda speed. They just go forever under normal applications. That k swap is going to be maybe 5x more expensive. You can buy a 2.5 for 500$ vs more than. 12k minimum to do the k swap. The 2.5 is literally a DIY 1k swap.

25-30k s2000 still gives 10-15k to spare, and it will seemingly retain a lot of that value. I do love the idea of this car, but at that price its a hard buy.

I get that this car is about building a agile low power track car, and it would be a blast to drive if fast on track, but a less nimble and less free reving 350z or G35 would probably cut a better lap time for a lot less money without sacrificing reliability.

Correct. People fantasize about the engine from this into that chassis and wouldn't that be amazing. The 350/370z is an amazing chassis and it comes with an amazing motor. The only swap that really makes sense to me is a roller RX8 for 1-2k and then you can put a built rotary or LS into it for a fairly cheap complete project. E46 cars can also bolt in an N52 with a prebuilt harness. No engine mounts required. Cheap motor with a cheap 6 speed trans bolts onto that. You just need a custom driveshaft. They are getting over 270 to the wheels with simple mods. Then of course there are 8th and 9th gen Hondas which already are built for the K24. But there are lots of Hondas on this channel already.

Isn't a better idea to swap the stock K24 balancer shaft oil pump for the K20A2 Type S pump? That pump is more capable of reliable high RPM operation, isn't it? Nice build by the way DP and PT. You made the best choice of engine for that Miata ;)

Pre 2010, when I was planning on LSx swapping my S14, it made sense over an SR20DET/turbo KA24DE/etc. With the change in prices, K24 seems to be the way these days. I'm not sure I can fit in a Miata, but the BRZ/FRS/G86 is very tempting!

Miatas are famous for being comfy for big and tall drivers.
