The Hasselblad X1D in 2023

The Hasselblad X1D-50C is a very capable digital medium format camera, and now that it is a couple of years older, I try to answer the question if the Hasselblad X1D is still worth it in 2023? Digital medium format cameras have always been unreachable for hobby photographers. Cameras like the Hasselblad H2D, H3D, H4D, H5D and H6D, or Phase One XF IQ3 and IQ4, or even Fujifilm GFX cameras like the GFX 50R, GFX 50S, GFX 100s have always been reserved for high end photographers. Especially the newer Hasselblad X2D 100C has increased the interest in the X1D again. How does the Hasselblad X1D, using HC lenses, compare to other cameras, especially now that full-frame cameras like the Sony A7RIV and Leica M11 have such high resolution sensors as well. In this video I test how well the Hasselblad X1D performs for some landscape photography.

Large sensor, high resolution but with lowish pixel density, beautiful industrial design and string cheese ergonomics… I think that’s a pretty sweet deal for €2500. I sort of feel like I should get one with a FF tilt shift lens because it makes a great flex as an architectural photographer. It just screams “Hire me, my camera is so fancy,” except honestly nobody except other photographers would be impressed 😢 Another great video! I feel just a little bit more elite watching it ☕️🫖📰🎷🎹👑

Fantastic Video ! Loved it. I have an X-T5 and a M10. Elite you may say……….? I just splashed out £2700 on a used X1D & 45 f3.5 lens. I think I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to own such cameras. The X-T5 does it all and more. The Leica is an elite luxury. The X1D is a challenge, a challenge for me to up my game as a photographer to do the X1D justice. The image quality it produces, is for me the ultimate challenge to create an image worthy of it………..!

I’m with you with the ergonomics mismatch on the Fuji. I went from a fuji GFX 50R to an X1D classic and never looked back. I always felt like the lenses felt cheap on the fuji. They have fallen in price quite a bit and sometimes find good deals on lenses.

Yeah the ergonomics of the GFX 50R and the weight/size of the GFX lenses don’t fit together 😅

I shoot on a Sony A1 with half a dozen of their best glasses and am not even one inch "financial elite", just trying to deliver. Reactive "responsive" shooting is "taking a picture" as in sports photography while the slower approach would be "creating a photograph" (with full intention for every detail), like a commercial shoot or a studio portrait. A Hasselblad is for the latter, imho

But ja, I agree, it's more of a status, an art. @ 9:34 Wow, the light balance is just amazing, the elegant shades of whites in the shadows. I agree as well, a different camera for a different scene. I like to carry 3 ready to go.

Hey man, i have a quick question for u. So i saw a video from u with the Nikon d2x. When there is no cf card inside does your shutter release work? And is there an image on the display? Cause mine only shows the menu but not the object/subject i can see through the viewfinder.

You can use autofocus if you have HC lens software 18 up 😉 it was hard, but I found one cheap

i think i'd rather go with a sony a7r iv. the pixel shift technology with 240megapixels is much better for my usecase (architectural photography).

Yeah the a7riv does a lot of things significantly better than the x1d, no questions about it, if you’re not dead set on digital medium format you’re gonna have a much better time with the sony

"Weather sealing" of cameras is marketing. Look at GFX 100 teardown. The weather sealed camera had few holes for water to enter. Please don't use cameras in the rain them sell them on to poor photog's who then have them breakdown later due to corrosion. Moisture will always enter a camera somewhere. And dust.

X cameras use the solid state aluminium body as a heat sink and they can become very warm in hand without any problem. Just never leave the camera on (without shut down time) in a camera bag, then it can get really hot with problems.

You know all hasselblads are handmade, also they aren't like leica they are a completely different camera type. If you look at other medium format cameras you'll see the price range. These are mostly cameras for product and fashion photography where high megapixel count is needed
