An important thing to note is that many older star systems were formed before they were populated with heavy metals and other critical elements from eons of increasingly complex supernovae that are likely necessary for both complex life and complex civilizations. So while there are systems billions of years older than ours, they might not have the resources necessary to a) develop life or b) intelligently develop to a point where said life is detectable.

Given the font of all knowledge, I'd probably change something incredibly insignificant that makes me laugh. Live saying the plural of mouse of mooses. It doesn't really change anything, so no knock-after effects need to really be accounted for, if it comes out that I changed that it's not that big a deal. Plus, I think it would be funny.
