In the 8 th grade (last year) I read the hate u give, I cried tears of joy, I cried tears of anger, i cried tears of sadness, I laughed and I smiled I feel such a strong connection to someone who does even know I exist is something truly powerful, I wish she could know how much she and Starr influenced my life and the way I am from the moment I read that book. To read is one thing, but to read, understand and relate to something like this is truly amazing. I can already see myself as Bri, from the braids to the timbs to the hoop earrings she literally is me with a different story dream, she wants to rap...I want to act (or be a poet) but ain’t nothing happened yet...I’m just on the come up

When she was a teenageer she "hated books cause they didn't look like me" Now she wants "other kids to read about black kids". Interesting.

Jim Stevens yes...if you are 35 and older ALL the literature and history you are introduced to either academically or individually is centered upon white people largely bc black authors and other minority authors don’t get their fair shot at publishing and bc the canon is filled with list created by white people about white people for white people. The reason whites do not know anyone’s else experience or perspectives or history frankly is quite literally you all are never introduced in any setting albeit family, academically etc. Having white kids and white people see characters that are unfamiliar to them even a fraction of the time when compared with every non white experience will go a long way to understanding and furthering dialogue with people who do not share your experience, perspective and may just open your minds to other 💡.

It's about representation, seeing yourself in a form of work. Letting little black children know that they matter, that were human. We dont get that very often, that's positive, in the media.

Why doesn’t a black author write a story that’s not about poverty and racism? I mean there are lots of black people out there living lives like anyone else. That have never stepped foot in a hood. Don’t have a drug dealing cousin or know anyone in jail. I don’t like how black people are being associated with only oppression, drugs and crime in books. These black authors that only focus on that are not doing any favors. It’s just perpetuating the idea that black people are only about oppression, BLM, crime and streets. Write a normal book about normal characters that have nothing to do with race. You can have black characters in a book without focusing on the racial divide.

Anna Wixom A righteous idiot. . .what a deadly combo. There are MILLION of books by black authors that features none of the Themes you mentioned. The amount of willful ignorance some of y’all show is just too callous

We stopped liking her after she lightened Starr in the hate you give. Angie Thomas is not for us.

Gina Lenetti That was not her. She’s not the casting director.

First of all, I love your username. Secondly, that movie deal was made before the book was released.
