My daughter who is 13 and dark skinned, is absolutely livid about the casting of the main character. She wanted to see The Darkest Minds this summer. And was also disappointed. The same actress was the lead, but they started out with a little girl that was dark skinned, and switched to the other actress as she aged. They don't look remotely alike. It was a terrible movie. Representation matters. Our young girls are definitely paying attention. Remember what they did to the Nina Simone movie?

I agree that it felt like Amandla's performance was forced. I was only mildly interested in seeing the movie to begin with, but then I happened to see a clip where Star is "yelling' at her white best friend in a schoolyard after the shooting. The dialogue felt very stilted and the acting just wasn't believable. I was cringing the entire time & actually felt second-hand embarrassment for everyone involved. I'm not wasting my money on 1.5+ hours of that.
@Ph4ntomR3q6 жыл бұрын
I liked the film a lot, but I'm glad I read the book first. The film felt like a simplified, sanitised version of the book. For me, the biggest issue was Chris' "I don't see colour" moment. I liked Starr's rebuttal - "If you don't see my blackness, you don't see me" - but this was not in the book; Chris was actually a lot more likeable there, in my opinion. Sekani's moment at the end, when Starr reiterated THUG LIFE in voice-over, felt over-the-top to me, and I much preferred the 'Spartacus' moment in the book, with all the business owners and neighbours claiming they saw King set the fire. In terms of the actress' race, I defer to you.
@siljea89265 жыл бұрын
Agree about Chris and Starr conversation in the limo. I understand the point about him liking her for who she is as person and that he see her beyond her skin color. But it was so bad written and delivered dialog that I did fall out a moment... Frankly I would have loved to have more time on their relationship to actually feel what made them fall for each other, I know they did try In the start of the movie, but would love to see more of that to care for them as a couple, because the movie did want to tell something about them.

Loveeeeeee the background. And i had issues with the cast as well. But through research I found out that Amandla actually reached out to the Directors asking to audition for the role which makes alot of sense because she's been in multiple YA book to movie adaptations and has a social platform in regards to activism and she's more palatable for white consumption. Angie tried it by claiming she wrote Starr with Amandla in mind. It's hella frustrating because even the book cover portrays a very visibly black girl and those struggle are unique to that demographic. It was a missed opportunity SMH.

Like that conversation in the limo between Starr and Chris was so disappointing. He basically said I don't see color and she failed to mention that this willful dismissal of her color glosses over all of the institutional and systematic issues that black people face. Even the climatic scene at the end with her little brother misses the mark. The whole movie had so much potential and it ended up being mediocre at best 😒

They had an entire book they couldve and SHOULDVE followed, but decided to water it down and leave out all the most important and relevant parts. Which made the movie characters actions seem forced and unrealistic. In the movie, they just left out SO MUCH. In the book all their actions and decisions made perfect sense.. and they had purpose and power behind every decision they made, and conversation they had. In the movie, it felt like they just did and said what they were supposed to.. to move the story along. It really just felt like a watered down version of a very powerful and moving book. They definitely missed the mark and should've had more sense and respect when making it into a movie.

I felt the same way. I wrote my media analysis on this film because I felt that it displayed colorblindness in a movie that wasn't meant to be color blind. Amandla being casted as Starr while the book cover shows a dark skin girl was very eh to me, simply because I understand Amandla wants to be a part of change, which she has the right to and can, but I agree with you when you said that there should have been different casting. The casting for Starr's friend/sister/??? seems kind of like the casting the NWA movie. Type A, B, and C girls. She played her role well, but her character was very stereotypical and made it seem like she couldn't be smart and "ratchet" too (since she kinda demonized Starr for her education). I feel like at the end, they kinda just ended on a happy note, even doe the baby just almost got shot by the cops and almost killed a man. That was a little annoying to me. They should've found a better way to end the movie.

I’ll catch it on Netflix:) I must say girl you look fabulous!!! I’ve followed your channel for awhile and it is awesome to see you glowing from happiness. Looking forward to more material from you👏👌

When I first clicked on the video I was livid because of the title, but I’m happy I decided to listen to what you had to say. 😅 I’m 18 y.o. and a dark skinned black girl. I loved the book and I loved the movie, but I definitely found myself kinda like ehh the book was better. I think Amandla wasn’t the right person to play Starr. I only truly liked the casting of Regina, Russel, Sekani, and the guy who played Khalil. I was upset to find out they got rid of the Devante story line as well. I feel like they cut so much out because of screen time, but I’d rather it be a long movie that delved into the complexities of this situation. I do appreciate the ending with Sekani though but maybe that’s because it shocked me since it wasn’t in the book. I still think people should watch it though. I think they were afraid of being too real 😕

I agree with you except for one point. I feel people are tired of seeing this type of movie and/or real life scenario because nothing has changed.

Thank you for this commentary!! To hear the book was watered down in the movie makes me look forward to reading it.

Yes! I’ve been waiting on you to give me a thorough critique on this movie every since I saw your post while you were at the movies couple of months ago on IG. I haven’t seen the movie BUT it’s kinda like when movies like this and Get Out and Black Panther( which I noticed you spared lol) and even Django (chile that movie just didn’t do it for me) oh and not to mention that Nate Parker’s Nat Turner movie get so much mainstream attention and also do well, it’s like I have a love/hate connect with it. I’m happy for the exposure and positive reviews BUT they just somehow always fall short to me whether it be stereotypical representation or just a downright cringe fest between the acting and mediocre script lol.

Soooooo.... I had no intention to see this movie.. If you want to roll your eyes out of your head attempt the Audible listen.... Also, my mama called me the other day to specifically tell me that Common cant act and he makes her cringe LOL

Honestly, I’m so happy I didn’t put my entertainment dollar towards this movie. I’d much rather see If Beagle Street Could Talk. It looks beautiful.

I wouldn’t even watch with a teenager... although it would be a good conversation starter... I don’t expect honesty with our storylines from Hollywood. The only type of films that remotely come close to portraying the truth are documentaries.

I read the book and it was so good I knew they couldn’t fit everything into the movie but I feel like they left so much out and if you didn’t read the book there’s a lot of things you would miss out on that the movie just barley touches on. I also feel like the script could have been more true to the book and not changed so much seems it didn’t seem to flow as well. I had the characters pictured differently then the cast but the message in this movie is still very powerful and strong. I hope movies like this can change the environment we currently live in and give power and a spotlight on such issues.

The book was def better! I feel like they washed down the movie to make it more palatable? Or acceptable to the general public

I love the new background. It is very aesthetically pleasing to the eye and showcases your personality, as you are a voracious reader. I love the hair and makeup as well. I loved the movie. However, I did think some parts were a little cheesy. I haven't read the book, but it is certainly disappointing to know that the characters did not represent the character images that were described in the book. I love and appreciate your commentary, Jouelzy! Thank you so much for doing a review on this movie.

I intentionally didn’t see the movie simply because the casting of Star based on the book cover alone. It was a missed opportunity. I haven’t read the book (yet) because I struggle with reading fiction books that are largely based on reality but have heard that it is a good read.

I agree with you on the review, the book was a lot better. I had my 10 year old son read the book and then we went to see the movie together. It did help to open up the dreaded but very real conversation that we all have to have with our young black children.

That crossed my mind about Issa while I watched the movie. I wasn’t sure she was right for the role, but I enjoyed seeing her in the screen. You brought up quite a few things I didn’t think about while watching the after having read the book. The biggest thing I took from movie was that it felt a lot heavier than the book, since they condensed the story so much to fit the big plot points, while the book took time to breathe with some levity between those big plot points. And Common and Mackie were odd choices to be cast in those roles in the movie. I’m so glad you reviewed The Hate U Give.

As someone who grew up closer to that of 'Starr 2.0', this movie served as a reminder that this ish is happening on a daily basis to people who look like me. It's very easy to get comfortable when you're not actively dealing with the BS, so I appreciate the film and it reminds me that I need to be active and aware. Now with that said, the casting definitely could have been better but I don't know if the writers fully understand the importance of representation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@chablisedavis53406 жыл бұрын
I think a very important thing that needs to be considered, which I learned recently myself, is the fact that what happens in a book doesn't translate well on screen. That is part of the reason why most books are significantly better than their movie adaptation. They have to remove and change things so that the movie can be pushed along, whereas in a book you have endless pages to convey whatever it is you're trying to convey. A book can easily end with a character having a big internal revelation but that doesn't work on film. I can see the potential casting issues but the girl in the book is described as being of a lighter tone and authors usually don't have much say so in what the cover looks like (because that is a common argument of why she needed to be darker).

I know I am extremely late, but that aids to my point. The book is mainly banned in southern states (and I mean hard press banned, like the same why learning about the slave trade is banned in Florida ). I am reading the Hate You Give for a Banned Book assignment, and my Predominantly White College is not ready for this discussion. I was trying to talk about police brutality in my class on Friday and the white professor said "My wife is black the police are nice to her..." I watched the movie before I read the book, but at this college I feel more impelled to write as well as present about this issue.

I coulda told y'all that. matter of fact I did a video about it in February lol the casting of Amandla as Star was explained by Angie Thomas. she said that Amandla's "don't cash crop my cornrows" video inspired the character so Amandla was the ideal Star. ... okay.
