Over here in Holland we used to have a lot of Cadillac hearses, but unfortunately they are being replaced by Mercedes hearses, most of them based on the Mercedes E-class wagons. I once knew a guy who had gone bankrupt and died a few months afterwards. At his funeral I overheard somebody joking "How the hell can he afford to ride in a Cadillac?".

Didn't work out that way for either of my parents. Local funeral director converted a Chevy Tahoe for that job. 4-wheel drive! Works well in the snow belt areas east of Lake Huron. The Caddys are front wheel drive and when loaded don't work so well in the winter.

So I just asked this question in the comment section and was wondering if you could answer it: why don't any of the large manufacturers such as Cadillac offer/build hearses on-site (at the very least the chassis, frame, doors, etc.) at one of their plants rather than customers having to 'rebuild'/customize a new, regular car from scratch? It just seems like a lot of work and extra expense to have to do all of this? Thx

Some weeks ago there was a hearse parked near a cemetary in Germany. In the dark early morning hours some people heared knocking sounds from the back of the hearse and someone was yelling "Help! Let me out!" from inside. So they called the police. It turned out that the driver who was supposed to bring a dead body to his hometown some hundred kilometers away arrived late at night at the cemetary after driving for hours. Since he did not know where to find a hotel he decided to take a nap in the back of his own hearse. Little did he know that the door could not be opened from the inside...

The leader of my church youth group many years ago, Father Fred (not his real name, but I don't want to talk about him without his permission), was a massive car enthusiast and both he and his father were incredibly talented mechanics. Anyway, Father Fred had a morbid sense of humor (in the best possible way) and, last I heard (he moved before I ever got to see it finished) he was building a 1950s hearse into a hot rod with a supercharged big block. He said 600+ horsepower was the target. It was airbrushed with "Dr. Death" on the sides, and seriously epic. Side note - Father Fred became a priest after crashing his sportbike in the rain and becoming paralyzed from the waist-down for months, then regaining his ability to walk and a few months later having a revelation about it all. He was a cool guy!

Thats a funny story! When I was a body collector we ran minivans. Our owner was cheap but to think there are people out there that are SO CHEAP that they would use rental vehicles for such a task, that's super shady to me. I mean, we would pick up like shotgun suicides or 3 week old hanging victims... to think that type of "gore" could have been present in a rental van, that's super shady. To be honest though, the dead are dead and there is money to be made there, not to be crass. In my area during my time as a body collector, crematoriums are probably the most disrespective facets of the death industry. Some of the ones I delivered to would just have a big room were we would literally stack the bodies in cardboard coffins. Just scribble the name and dates and some other info on the box before piling them up in the corner to be incinerated when the next truck came through the gather them all.

I currently own two classic Cadillac Hearses. A 1953 Miller Meteor 3 way, and a 1968 Miller Meteor Hearse. Back in the 2000s, we had a local Hearse club called The Jacksonville Deadsleds, in Jacksonville, Florida. Myself and another close friend were co- Presidents. We had a beer coolef made from a steel rental casket, and a BBQ grille made from another. Monthly meetings would land 10- 18 Hearses at my or Tommy's homes. The looks we got. Took them to car meets, cruises, etc. Now, due to the high cost of a new Hearse, most Funeral homes get them in a lend-lease program, so they can regularly update the models. Ohio is still the manufacturing mecca for Hearses, with Miller Meteor, S&S coach works, among many others. Hearses are hand built, American automobiles, that are low mile, well maintained used cars. No one has died in them, that is reserved for Ambulances. In the earlier decades, if you were in a small town with not alot of money, you purchased a Combination Hearse/Ambulance. They have removable panels over the back side windows where the Landau bars hang. And it's not like Hearses are used for daily mundane tasks like shopping, just driving around, and they rarely see highway miles, so they are a great investment! Do yourself a favor and buy one while you can still drive it, as opposed to it just being your last ride...

Awesome topic for a video, I appreciate it! I used to be a body collector. I worked for a third party company that was hired to be on call for county medical exmainers and funeral homes. We had some hearses for rent for funeral homes that either couldn't afford their own or had such a high volume that they needed additional vehicles. Our main fleet however consisted of Grand Caravans and Town & Country minivans. Their size and ride height is perfect for use with gurneys and stretchers. We had one Ram Sprinter style van but if you had someone that weighed a few hundred pounds, it was a nightmare to load the corpses in that van. Living in Metro Detroit, the minivans also handled very well in snow even without AWD. I HAAAAAATE minivans with a severe passion but in this instance they were perfect. The interiors were designed in a way that makes them easy to clean out any gore that might spill out from a shotgun suicide to the face. The rear passenger roll down side windows were nice to air out the vans after traveling a couple of hours with a 3 week old decomp laying behind you. Most of the funeral homes we worked with also had their own fleet of minivans they would use during normal business hours. To be clear, the minivans were used for body transport BEFORE the funeral. Once in a while we would encounter people that hated the fact that their family member's corpse was being taken away by a minivan, namely rich people (hearses are reserved for funerals, not initial collection of the body). Other more humble folks wouldn't be bothered. In fact one family I will never forget... they said their father (who I was there to collect) loved going for night rides in his car. They asked that I open the body bag on the way to the morgue so that he could have one last night ride. I am a die hard car enthusiast so I DEFINATELY could relate to that. So I unzipped the bag and him and I had a nice hour long night drive to his final destination.

My uncle did too. He built it into a sleeper 1/4 mile car. He also used it for his Halloween parties and had it set up with all of the beer iced down in the back. When you opened the back door to get a beer, a crash test dummy would fling up out of a coffin, which freaked out a lot of people the first time. It was pretty cool.

I'm part of a hearse community here in Denver (lookup hearsecon). I currently own two classic caddy coaches I'm restoring. There's a few key points donut missed. One being that to save money a lot of coaches were dual purpose ambulance and hearse (ecto 1) and were called combos. He didn't talk about European style vs American, and he touched on the immense cost, but not that many smaller funeral homes that can't afford to buy a coach will rent one from someone like my friends and I for services.

My cousin (funeral director) says you can get 16 inches added on to a mini van, have a vinal top put on, and chrome scrolls on the sides for a fraction of the cost elogating a Caddy, and no leaks of brake fluid and gas. So that's why smaller funeral homes are going to them. Over half funerals are cremated, so half don't even get buried.

When I was in college, I worked at a car rental agency. The local cemetery started renting panel vans from us when theirs broke down. We assumed it was for landscaping. Nope. Forgot their casket rollers in the back, twice. They were using them to transport bodies from the local funeral homes to the cemetery's crematorium. It was creepy, but not against the rules. So yeah, I can legitimately say I've driven a hearse, just not intentionally. Imagine thinking your loved one is being taken to their final resting place in a luxury vehicle, but instead they get a GMC Savanna that says "rent me for $20/day" in cheery letters on the side.

Holden motor works and GMH holden did build some 'factory' hearses in various guises the 1930s to the 1960s. Noted were 2 Buicks with an extended chassis, standard front doors and grills being the only Buick parts. The whole body was bespoke by Holden for the customer. Strangely, one had a 53 grille, the other a 54 grille. To get to the other side fast, a straight 8 engine with a 3 speed. The 53 has been in a shed for about 25 years and still drives on old cross-ply tyres. Still with original paint, glass, timber, a rebuilt engine. The guy who owns it used it as his work and surf wagon from the late 60s to the 80s. Also, My father in law built several Holden factory hearses in the 1960s, I think they were EJs. My dads F100 served as a hearses on several occasions, as did the local fire truck and a couple of land rovers, small bush town with no hearses, but plenty of 🐎. To think I also spent hundreds of hours on my own in the back of that old F truck. 🙃 Also, Hiller, an Australian company, specialises in and builds and exports hearses world wide, with some clients shipping cars from overseas to have them built.

I own two (retired) hearses at the moment. One is a 1980 Chevrolet Caprice wagon, and the other one is a 1976 Dodge Coronet. Here, American wagons were used as hearses, as they were long enough to be used without any modifications, so just the roller slide for the coffin in the back was added, and they were good to go. Volvos and Mercedeses have to be lengthened, and as such were much more expensive. My chevy looks lika any wagon in black, but the Dodge is in the museum registry as a hearse, and stll has the roller in the back. The outside is not modified, but for the little flag pole on the left fender. And no, I’m not a hearse enthusiast by any means, but these cars have been very well looked after with low miles

@@IsaacSmelcZhan because in that culture they don’t want death to be viewed as something tragic and sad, they want people’s moods to be lifted and be happy about “life and death” which I think is a cool way of celebrating a funeral

@@Watchdog-vf8ug death should never be sad. It is as beautiful as the life that came before it. The loss behind it is something else but that is why you remember them as they lived and not what they left behind.

Buick also made funeral coaches as well from 1978-1989 out of a Lesabre Estate wagon and Chevrolet Caprice had one from 1985-1989. These are rare models

Having worked in the death care industry, I greatly appreciate the research y'all did into the 'proper' terminology. One or two tidbits worth pointing out: - Not every funeral home has their own coach. Some contract with a company to provide coach services on demand, this reduces overhead and up-front cost. The company I was with specialized in body removal (and were responsible for about 90% of the market) and provided coaches to 75-80% of all the funeral homes in the area. - The death care industry can be extremely exploitative, and I sincerely appreciate that y'all mentioned this. There is a movement amongst some to change that, but it's a long-standing issue in the industry and it's been driven by takeovers of locally/family owned funeral homes by larger conglomerates like SCS Corp.

In the UK we typically have Jaguar as our hearses, or funnily enough the Ford Mondeo. I believe I’ve seen an old Bentley too as a hearse

My favorite car I've ever owned was a '69 Cadillac Superior Sovereign Funeral Coach. It was built on a 165" Cadillac commercial chassis. Essentially, a cab & chassis, with a GM 14 bolt corporate rear axle, and, rear suspension from a GM 3 ton truck. It had that BEAUTIFUL 10.5:1 compression 472! 375 hp, and, 525 lbs-ft. of torque.
