Excellent show. People dislike that it was different to Hill House; but people would say the show was too similar to Hill House if they had just redone it with new characters. Personally, I loved it, and has a really touching story about regret and love. My major complaints are that it *sorely* lacks Mike Flanagan's direction (several sequences I thought to myself "Flanagan would have done that differently") and that I wasn't a huge fan of using the narrator to tell things that could have been expressed with emotions by the actors. Really good though. Solid 8/10.
@djman56674 жыл бұрын
I like it. I think it's great for what it's trying to be. It's very different and needs to be. I agree with you on that. I think a lot of people are disappointed in the show as a follow up to Hill House. Not many people expected it to be what it is. I'm glad they went in a different direction. Still a very touching story with top notch acting from everyone. I still like Hill House much more though. Much more emotionally impactful.
@arafat98284 жыл бұрын
I WHOLELY agree that Flanagan would have made things a whole lot better. Especially on the horror aspect. I mean he has a great knack for scary sets and ideas for creepy ghosts. I mean *SPOILER* that Plague Doctor was severely misused. I mean Flanagan wrote the story and thus the background of the ghosts was great. But since they were severely misused/underused the ghosts that reveal did not have a big impact. I mean since we SAW the Lady of the Lake her backstory worked but would've worked better if we saw her a couple more times
@TheReelReesePod4 жыл бұрын
@@djman5667 maybe because I love turn of the screw or maybe because I watched Bly first, but Hill House was nowhere near, not even on the same scale, as Bly for me. Emotionally or Narratively. The only thing I can say about Hill House is that it had more scares, and that episode 6 was a technical marvel. I still like it, I love all of Flanagan’s work. However I think Hill House is a solid 6.5-7/10 and Bly is a 9 for me.

@@arafat9828 Most of the ghost in Hill House had relevance to the plot at all though, so it’s not that big of a complaint. Hello! I haven't finished the series so I don't know the answer to this, but the lady narrating the story at the hotel is set in 2007, while this story is set in the late 80's. In 2007, Flora would not be nearly as old Carla Gugino (the narrator) is. Flora would still be a younger woman in her late 20's at that time (if still alive). It could be Dani based on age, but the narrator has an English accent so it wouldn't be her.

Just finished the whole show and absolutely loved it. I had been told beforehand that it would be very different from Hill House, and it certainly is. I think it's important to know that going in. Is it just as good as Hill House was? I would have to say no, but that's only because Hill House, in my opinion, was near perfect. It's also quite clear that Bly Manor isn't all directed by Flanagan. His touch is missed during sone moments, though the new directors do a fine job. The feel of the show is also different. Bly Manor is much less of a horror, and much more of a gothic romance (which makes sense, considering the source material).

@@TheReelReesePod Yeah I guess it all depends on what you expect going in and which of the two you've seen first. Since writing that first comment I've reflected on both shows and I actually think Bly Manor might have left more of an emotional impact on me than Hill House did. So they're pretty equal for me I guess. I am curious though...what exactly didn't you like about Hill House?
@TheReelReesePod4 жыл бұрын
@@IHARumor Oh wait, I didn’t want to go under the impression that I didn’t like HH. I did like it! I liked it a lot more than most other Horror TV Shows. If for some odd reason I had to compare it to Bly, that’s where it falls short me. I think I could be biased due to the fact I knew much more about Turn of the Screw and Bly’s characters prior to even knowing this show existed. I already had a connection with the story. Knowing this adaptation, along with other works of Henry James, gave this a head start for me. That aside though, I feel much more emotionally connected with Bly’s characters by the end of the show. I think the actual thing most love about Hill House, the horror, took me out of the story in comparison to this. Some of the places the characters ended up narratively, some of the choices made throughout the show, and sometimes the way they chose to tell a specific story/event didn’t sit well with me either. Another thing is that I was told HH was a 11/10, perfect show. Well, I watched Bly, though it was a solid 8.5-9/10 and was like “Great! HH is about to be one of my favorite, if not my favorite Horror Show ever. Everyone has been telling me it’s perfect, I’m about to love this!”. Well, you know who that goes when you set expectations, let alone sit them that high. The same way some wanted more HH in Bly, I wanted more Bly in HH (since I watched it after). It’s a lot of biased from my point of view and from others than made me drift away from HH. My bias was already knowing the characters and story, and that along with other stories from Henry James being incorporated was heaven for me, especially being a writer myself. The bias from others was people overhyping HH for me and getting me excitement up and then having it fall short. We’re all flawed as humans, we all have our bias and that sometimes is what make our opinions of the same thing so drastically different. And that’s perfectly fine!

You guys missed some ghosts in this episode, this season in overall shows less ghosts but you can see some throughout the episodes, if you keep an eye beyond the characters you're gonna see them, some are actually not really hard to see

Wow you were spot on about the storyteller. But I don’t think you will be screaming a lot in this series.

First episode has the most ghosts can you spot them all 👻 you saw the doll in the bathroom but not the plague Dr in the bathroom while she was talking to miles in bed. You should go back and re-watch this episode.

It's hard to tell, because I think Carla Gugino struggles slightly with attempting an authentic accent. Might be easier for Brits to hear but I believe she tries to attempt a Northern English accent. Most likely Yorkshire. Heard easier when she recites the song at the start(her pronunciation of 'but' for example). But then she clearly mixes this with what I think most non native think 'Britons' sound like with an RP voice...then later is a little East London in vernacular. She makes it so hard to know who she is playing 🤣 But certainly not the worst attempt I've heard.

I heard from someone that her accent was like that to match the accent of the character whom she plays (You do know whom she plays right cuz idk if I'm giving away a spoiler)
