I believe many people dismiss this show because, unlike Hill House, the deeply messed up goings on at Bly Manor take longer for the viewer to realize the depths of the situations the characters are in. You're correct - the story is very much like peeling an onion. It doesn't seem like much in the beginning, but the closer you get to the center, the more overwhelming, juicy, and full of zest it becomes. Each layer of secrets reveals a deeper layer, and they become more powerful in the lives of the characters, allowing you to understand that these things you saw as peculiar or strange quirks were clues the whole time. Hill House was about what death and secrets did to a family's love and their lives, and how the truth and renewing their bonds helped to make it better. Bly Manor is about what twisted, wrong, and obsessive love relationships have done and are doing to the people who exist and existed there... but how much deeper does this go, and can anything be done to make it better for any of them?

@Kayjee17 I'd argue that Haunting of Hill House is about being haunted by ones past while Bly Manor is about dementia and the horror of forgetting about ones past and memories. The cool part is we're both right and there's another 10 interpretations that work for each. They really are works of art.

When Henry & Charlotte locked eyes during the labor scene, I knew he was Flora’s father.

When I watched this episode, in particular when Henry was confronted by his guilt-ghost, I thought of what Steven said in Hill House; "A ghost can be a lot of things. A memory, a daydream, a secret. Grief, anger, guilt ."

I think this might be the single most important sentence to understand the Flaniverse shows. Especially the part about guilt.

Little known fact, Dominic is played by the legendary Garth Marenghi, author, dream-weaver, visionary + actor. Truly a multi-talented icon. ...iykyk

I think when Flora says perfectly splendid, it really is Flora. She says it the way a child who has latched onto somethind would say it. I think Rebecca's possession of Flora is visible in the moments where Flora is seemingly overly reserved and mature in a way that feels "off" for her character.

I love the "perfectly splendid" subplot here. When we first hear it, Flora is saying it and we think it's just something she says. Then we see Miss Jessel's flashbacks and realize she is the one that says it and Flora picked it up from her. Then in this episode we are told (or it's suggested to us) that every time Flora has said "perfectly splendid" that she has been possessed by Miss Jessel. This is *definitely* a show that you get more out of on a rewatch.

The bit where you realise she can see Miss Jessel is a fantastic and unusual jump scare

Before this episode there is no indication that Henry is Flora's father. So no, you didn't miss anything.

There's so much going on at the Manor. It feels a bit chaotic. I'm just biding my time waiting for some concrete answers as to what is happening.

Episode 5 to the end was really pretty amazing.

Starting to get the sneaking suspicion that pretty much everyone at the Manor is dead… other than the kids. 🤷♂️
