While "The Haunting of Hill House" was about grief, I feel that "The Haunting of Bly Manor" was about having a terminal disease, dementia specifically. You can see it in how Owen's mother literally has dementia. Hannah is getting lost in her memories just like Owen's mom. Dani is moving through life "one day at a time". She has this thing hanging over her that she can feel slowly coming on. She dreads it. Every now and again Dani can see that it's there. By the end she's not really there anymore, it's just the disease taking everything from her.

Honestly I feel like they kept it a bit vague on purpose, as a person with clinical depression I felt like Dani’s speeches about a dark feeling looming inside her and ultimately being scared of hurting the people around her with the weight of her illness was a powerful message on its own

If it's any consolation, think this: they've lived in Vermont (you can tell by the newspaper stand) and Vermont legalized civil unions in 2000. The bath tub scene when Jamie comes home happens in 2000. Which means they spend at least 13 years together, happy together, in their gay little flower shop. I'd say that's a happy ending alright.

@Christopher VanGogh yeah i think when jaime told flora that some little pieces of their life comes back coz everytime dani touches jaimes shoulder i think she dream or memory hops to their life together, not that jaime ever forgot it but somehow relive it together without jaime knowing that dani is actually with her.

Welcome to Cry Manor where a single screenshot can make you instantly cry. That final shot gets me every time. (although I have been crying before that too). I think one of the reasons the kids don't remember what happened that summer is that they were being "tucked away" by Peter and Rebecca for most of it, especially Miles. I really really love this series because it's so well constructed that you notice more and more details upon rewatching and you see it all layed out and it's so satisfying. It's like the creators trust their audience so they're not pointing out things, but if you pay attention it pays off. And as an audience member, I trust them to tell me a story that's well constructive and so rich that I don't mind the spooks (I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to horror) or the general confusion while watching the show for the first time. It's weird to have this particular show as a comfort show, but I choose to see that they had over 10 years together (despite us seeing it in montage) and as Jaime herself says "that's more than most people get". It's also ironic that the straight couple, Owen and Hannah kind of got the ending that normally a wlw couple would get just a few years ago. The pining.. the almost something, the too late of it all. The actress that plays Hannah is queer too and the irony of that kind of makes me giggle.

Dani saved two kids and every ghost in Bly and she even managed to come back to the love of her life. Jamie telling everyone their story so nobody can forget Dani and her face wont change like the others. Literally this story can't be any better and more heartbreaking.

Remember the scene when Dani left, and Jamie woke up and saw her note? Amelia Eve (Jamie) said that Victoria wrote the note but Amelia wasn't allowed to see it until she was actually filming this scene, so her reaction is genuine. Another fun fact about this scene is that there is another scene that they filmed that was supposed to be in its place. Jamie was supposed to have woken up when Dani was going to leave and stopped her. They would have talked about it and said their goodbyes. Victoria and Amelia were so genuinely emotional while filming this deleted scene that they kept crying and holding each other. I would've loved to have seen it.

- They're both little hobbits, Jamie is a gardner a la Samwise....AND NOW THERE'S A RING. - According to the newspaper vendor in front of their home, Dani and Jamie lived in Vermont. Civil Unions become law in 2000 in VT. So Dani and Jamie were together at least 13 years.

I so love that Bly Manor has become this cultural icon for being a show that actually had themes and a genre where the story led them to write the death of a wlw character, and they did it in such a way that the community genuinely loves this show. It really shows what the "bury your gays" trope is and how weak it is in stories. We know exactly what we're seeing when some queer character gets randomly shot in their lover's arms like moments from experiencing happiness. In this show, they let their love live. And the loss thematically parallels losing someone with a terminal illness, not losing someone to the fictional stand in for a hate crime. We know when we're loved, and we know when we're hated. The gaslighting from creators is just weak, and this show makes it so clear.

A tiny detail--Jaimie rarely saw any ghosts. It seems you need to have some talent at seeing ghosts (like Flora as a child, and Dani) or the Ghost has to make some mighty effort to be seen (like Hannah and Peter). And Dani will never ever tempt Jaimie to take her own life. Never. But will wait, patiently, until they can be together. This also means Dani set Viola free. There is NO Lady in the Lake, not any longer. Speaking as a widower, I feel enormously for these two--and envy how much time they had together. Love your reactions.
